Even though it got too close for comfort at the end, probably the overall best performance for Columbia, beating Yale at Yale.

So are the players or Engles, or both, responsible for this incredible performance? Yale, as all of you know, was leading the League until the end of this game. And two straight on-the-road wins for Columbia.

Something about Columbia Basketball has changed over this weekend, and I hope it's not an aberration.

Two road wins is a real achievement.

This may have been the best weekend for Columbia Basketball in the last three years. I am very happy for everyone involved with the basketball program, but specially the players because they have obviously worked extremely hard this year to get into the win column in a meaningful way and that has finally happened. So hats off to our guys!

As happy as I was to be right about my Brown prediction, I am even happier to have been so wrong about what would happen at Yale.

Engles can teach. Engles can coach. The difficulty with both coaching and teaching is that sometimes it takes a while for your students to get it. The team now has and suddenly, we are in overdrive. Let's just hope we sweep next weekend and finish on a high note.

If you watch 1000’s of games over many decades – as many on these boards have - occasionally you see a team jell, even a losing team with young players and not enough talent and very little margin for error. Young guys get experience, older guys find another level, the individuals start to feel and act as a unit. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen and maybe that is what we are seeing in these three road wins out of four games.

Clearly the coaching has been good. On the first 5 baskets tonight, 4 were layups off of sets and the fifth was an Adlesh 3 off of a set; several times in recent games after time-outs we have run sets for baskets which I always have thought is one sign of good coaching; tonight we had serious early foul trouble and managed around it; and, we are just starting to occasionally do more of what we needed to do to be more competitive and weren’t doing earlier, ie getting to the foul line more and defending the three better among other things.

The players are clearly playing better. No more positional confusion on the sets or on defensive schemes, likely due to both experience and more on-court communication; lots of covering on third and fourth rotations; diving for balls on the floor; working on skills like the Nweke turnaround and the Adlesh drive neither of which showed much early in the year; showing composure under pressure ie Stefanini hitting two totally nails jumpers at the end of the Brown game to win it and Adlesh calmly losing Onyi behind an Tape’ screen tonight to hit the three that put us far enough ahead to hold on. I am not sure Tape’ instinctively comes out quickly to set that screen last year. Just a sign of an improving player and the same could be said of most everyone on the roster.

It’s nice to win some meaningful games. Perhaps this team has reached another level. It certainly is doing better for now. Time will tell the rest. Happy for the guys.

Tape is coming into his own. Tremendous upside. Engles has really gotten these kids to play hard and smart. The young players are also playing well.

Tape has averaged 12.5 ppg over the last 10 games, including 14, 15, 16, and 16 over the last 4.

Excellent points by hoopsfan and excellent point by cc66 re teaching and coaching.

We showed 3 things that wowed me tonight: good, steady D all game (I was amazed that Killingsworth could actually do a solid job on Oni, who is a lot quicker), great ball movement on O and simply poise.

And this is the same Yale team that humiliated Cornell the previous evening. So I hope we don’t start hearing that Yale took the night off last night. I hereby take back all doubts previously expressed on this page about Engles.

Yes, that, and perhaps we also eased the concern of Penn fans who thought that happened to them was just an unsettling accident.

There were a few Penn fans that thought that. Most knew what Columbia was capable of and Steve Donahue, in particular, talked publicly about the abilities of every team in the league this year (before and after both Columbia/Penn games).

Columbia is an Aiken miracle 3 away from beating 3 of the top 5 teams in the IL on the road. Very impressive.

Both Penn games were close. We played everybody tough and lost quite a few one possession games. The only bad game was at Dartmouth the night after the triple OT loss at Harvard. And I think that Harvard also lost to Cornell on the same evening. In any event, this has been a the most competitive season in my memory. I only wish we could have picked up another win or two earlier in the season.
