First off, who's going? I've actually never been to Yale and I'll be bringing my little guy and a buddy. I plan to leave in the 7 am hour to get to New Haven 2 hours before tip. I imagine nothing will be open until 11, but what are the recommendations for beer/pizza? Is there an easy place to park for the day if up there that early? I guess I could always park somewhere a few miles away and uber if need be. I am FIRED up for another shot at these guys, especially after some of the talking that has gone on around these parts.

Frank Pepe or Modern are the places to go for apizza (yes, that is what they call it there) although if bringing your kid, maybe the most unique thing is Louis Lunch, the legendary inventor of the hamburger sandwich. https://louislunch.com/

Yes, I am going, aren't we all?

Is that the steamed burgers? I've seen it on tv shows. I'm guessing they don't have quite the beer selection I'm looking for. The parking is my biggest worry.

No--that's in Meriden, near Hartford. These are in vertical cooking grills (see them on the link).

No beer at all there...but with a wink to the late Ray Carazo, there won't be enough beer in all of New Haven if the Quakers win

I know these burgers too. I think I've officially watched too many of the food network/travel channel shows on the best burger joints. Maybe if they win I'll go after.

It's worth stopping in, for the history, the attitude, and the truly ancient broilers - but it won't be the best burger you ever had.

And if your little guy is anything like mine, be forewarned that there is no ketchup at Louis Lunch. Their attitude is sort of like Pat's - they decide what the approved configurations are, and none of them include condiments. (Only onion and tomato, if I recall correctly).

Claire’s Corner Copia is an institution there. Some really creative vegetarian fare and awesome desserts. And kosher to boot. Owners are not Jewish so it would be open on Saturday when you’re there and plenty early too. Highly recommended.

Louis Lunch DOES have cheese. Just no ketchup or other condiments. No fries, either---just potato salad or chips.

Here's a link to New Haven restaurants featured in various food themed shows.

It starts with Man vs Food Nation, which visited Louis' Lunch, Modern Apizza and The Cheese Truck.

Pepe's and Sally's are the places for pizza. Both are among the first pizza places in the country, and are outstanding. Modern is really good, but not in the same league as the other two.

Long lines are common.

The white clam pizza at Pepe's is transcendent.

My wife loves Pepe's, but my preference would be Modern. While Pepe's might have marginally better pizza, I don't think it's a big enough difference to wait in their long line. And Modern is not on Wooster Street, which is a plus if you're driving.

If you're staying at the Courtyard at Yale, there's a nice little breakfast place next door called Patricia's, which my wife an I like.

Otto, I completely agree with that - Pepe's and Sally's maximize the pizza experience, but Modern is MUCH more convenient.

And I'm sure I'll start an uproar with this - but all 3 of them are better than any Philadelphia pizza I've ever had - although to be fair almost all of my Philadelphia pizza-eating career was 40 years ago.

I have never had trouble finding parking on the street within, say 10 blocks of the gym. I just wouldn't try and get there within a half hour of the game. I'm saving the eating experience for post-game.

I'll be pulling into Yale in the 10am hour and looking for a place to park and then settle in for an hour. I'm sure nothing opens before 11.

Thanks Palestra. Sounds good.

Pepe's and Sally's are about a mile and a half drive from Payne Whitney. Modern, on State Street, is probably a little over a mile from the gym.

I don't know how I've never made it to Louis' Lunch over the years, but I can definitely attest to Claire's being terrific.

Maison Mathis is also good for breakfast and even closer to the arena.

I still miss the Educated Burgher.

Damn, you beat me to it. I haven't been able to check this board all day, but that was the obvious response. Magic also claims to have schooled Booney according the article in The Athletic.

Just got home and checked the DP coverage of the game. Magic and Kelser were pretty even statistically. Magic shot 9-10 for 29 points with 10 rebs and 10 asssists. Rich Hoffman, who would go on to a long career at The Philadelphia Daily News, wrote about Kelser, "The senior co-captain scored 28 points on 12-for-19 shooting, snagged nine rebounds and blocked four shots. It seemed like 44."

I haven't been able to rewatch that game for 40 years despite having it on VHS, but my memory was that Kelser just manhandled us inside.

I was there. After all the hype, it was truly demoralizing. Matt White went to the hoop and was open briefly a couple of times but couldn't convert. We missed a few shots and Magic ran us out of the gym in transition. If that were not bad enough, when we were behind something like 52-12, the Penn and started chanting, "That's alright, that's okay, you're going to work for us someday." If there had been a hole I could have crawled in and just cried, I might have done so. I still have PTSD and can't watch the video either, anymore than I can watch a replay of Villanova's win in the Eastern finals (1971?)after we had beaten them in the regular season. In both cases, we looked tired, and the moment was too big for our guys. On a different level, of course, what Darnell did last year in the playoffs was so inspiring and joyful because he would not allow the moment interfere with his mission. Darnell didn't have the talent to start on those teams and wasn't playing against Magic, Kelser, Porter, Ford, etc, but he indeed was magical and carried us when we needed it. For you old-timers, Corky Calhoun did that for a whole game against Harvard when they had James Brown and making noise in Sports Illustrated about how they were going to take us down.

I've had Pepe's and Modern and liked Modern better. Can't speak to Sally's yet. Re: Philly pizza, to me the New Haven places are more gourmet pizza, and I've had gourmet pizza here that was really good. I'm sure that they're better than typical cheap Philly places, but then, they're better than typical cheap New Haven places as well.

There's a garage on York St (which runs northeast in the general direction of the gym) a little ways below Chapel St., so basically three or four blocks south of the gym. It's tough to find street parking closer than that that is both reasonably priced and long enough. If you're interested in taking the kids for a tour before or after the game, the garage is right off the southern edge of the main part of campus, so it's easy to do a loop from the gym and end up back at the car. I recommend not parking west of Howe Street.

There is---it is in one of the side corners. Don't know which one. Most of us bought early, since it was pretty clear that season ticket holders were unlikely to get any of the allotment. I am sitting in the first row of the end balcony, hanging right over the court.

Nice to get first row. My sunday tickets would be awesome but I'm in row L of one of the balcony's Saturday.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'm switching to a place that offers breakfast since I'll be there pre-pizza. If they win, I'll have all the pizza I can handle.

Regardless of the first game outcome, I'll be staying for the 2nd game as well as the 3rd game (the Penn women). Your men's doubleheader ticket gets you into the women's doubleheader Saturday evening.

You are correct. With all this "championship" declarations, I thought Penn was the 1 seed. I see now that they are a 2 seed. Just means I'll have time for dinner and have to stay later.
