They’ve tweeted out a big graphic saying Harvard is the first school in 38 years to win 7 Ivy titles in 9 years:

“Decade of Dominance”

Except ... it’s only been 12 years. Penn won 7 between ‘98-‘99 and ‘06-‘07.

And Penn was only co-champs once in that stretch (‘01-‘02). Harvard has finnished tied for first 4 times in these 9 years. Outright champs only 3 times, and missed the NCAAs in 2 of the 3 where a playoff/tournament was contested (this year pending of course.)

All great points. The whole "playoff/tournament is not to determine the Ivy champ, just the league representative in the NCAA Tournament" line is a joke.
If you didn't get in it, you didn't win it.

We've been through this repeatedly on the Penn board (where any Decade of Dominance debate belongs), but nothing comes close to the 70s. Eight outright titles and NCAA appearances. Sadly, one of the two missing years was my freshman year, but we repaid it with a Final Four appearance followed by a playoff victory to open the 80s in my senior year. The Quakers suffered a grand total of 8 league losses in the 8 championship seasons of the 70s. I still don't count the playoff loss years in '81 and '96 as Ivy titles, although the league does. We retroactively hung banners for those co-championships years later, but if you don't go to the NCAAs, you can't claim to be Ivy champ. Period. That's why we are the reigning champs, not Harvard.

That's another great point. Just ask Stan Pawlak and Jeff Neuman about that. They would know from shandas.

We were so looking forward to that team playing Syracuse, which had been in the Palestra & beaten, I think, LaSalle. Jerry Ford just did not care about the student athletes in his care. He was consumed with his holier than thou relationship with the poobahs.

While we're all being fair... the 2010s were the toughest the Ivy League has consistently been since the 1970s.

Shared titles or not, Harvard's run this decade had a higher degree of difficulty than we've seen in the AI era.

You can sneer at the shared titles, but the run has, indeed, been extremely impressive.

I don't think he was sneering---he was just commenting on the incorrect factual assertion that 7 of 10 has never been done before when Penn has done it twice, in the '70s (8 of 10) and 00's (7 of 10).

What Harvard has done is impressive...just not uniquely impressive.

I wasn’t talking specifically about Chip vis a vis sneering at shared titles. But there’s plenty of sneering.

To be clear the original tweet said “in 38 years” so it clearly had incorporated Penn’s 70s run.

What was at issue was Penn’s 99 to 07 run with seven titles. My point is merely that Harvard’s run came in a much, much tougher league (and also included 2 NCAA wins). That’s uniquely impressive.

There are other uniquely impressive performances in that run as well. Princeton’s 1990s seeding comes to mind. Penn’s run winning all those Ivy games in a row in the mid-90s.

But we’re in a unique league now (when it comes to the AI era). Wins are far more difficult to come by and consistent strong performances should be celebrated.

What an appalling error. We should probably stop playing basketball. Is Brown or Cornell available for the weekend?

The rest of the league should be thanking Amaker for rising the overall level of play in the Ivies. He disrupted what had become the natural order, P or P at the top. Fortunately, the new natural order has Harvard at the top, but I am worried about Penn now that they have a great coach who isn’t open to selling recruiting slots to rich families.

Maybe it’s Scalise that the entire league should be thanking. All the folks behind the surge of support and relaxed AI rules that enabled Amaker to do what he’s done. It has been good for the entire league.
