Back and forth game in Dayton against Belmont team favored by about 3, but Temple played pretty poorly to close the half down 6 (gave up bucket with a few seconds left).
Still very winnable but Temple will need to turn them over more and hit a better % of 3s to win it.
Hope they do or it will be a rather sad end to Dunphy’s run (though ironically appropriate based on criticisms of his NCAA record).

OTOH, Pete Rose made more outs than anyone else in MLB history. You have to be doing something right to be the "losingest coach in NCAA tournament history".

Yeah, you do have to get there...but, still just terrible. Temple looks very familiar...too much dribbling, not enough passing, poor shot selection. Vintage Dunph.

The vintage Dunph Penn NCAA tourney days for sure. Being right in the game until some crucial stage in the 2nd half, then running out of gas.

This looks like classic Dunphy NCAA game. Back and forth and melt down the stretch...
Shame but while Belmont is ranked a little better, these are pretty much even teams, so can’t use the “his team’s were always lower seeds†excuse.
I mean, the announcers just said Belmont has literally never won a tournament game. This is Temple, one of the winningest programs in NCAA history.
I LOVE Dunphy and LOVE what he did at Penn, but you can’t fault Temple on this. Bottom line is that he just didn’t recruit well enough, and in my opinion one of his best qualities, loyalty, is what held him back. He should have let Dave Duke “retire†off into the sunset a long time ago and brought in a lead recruiter when they moved to American.
Really disappointing end to a fantastic career (outside of NCAAs).

3-17 says it all. That's not a coincidence, its Dunph. He kind of embodies the 'peter principle" as it comes to basketball coaches.

Not fair. He had much success in his coaching career.
When it came to tourney games, was very good at preparing his teams. The big weakness was always making adjustments as the game progressed.

That may have been some of the worst down-the-stretch basketball I have ever seen. I don't think they made a good basketball decision after they went on their run and had a 5 point lead. And it was on both ends of the court---terrible quick flat 3 pointers without a chance on offense and consistently out of place on defense.
Belmont played OK, but I don't think they were as good as Penn before the freshmen got hurt. Decent ball movement, and not great D. Temple should have beaten this team.

Temple had no answer for Belmont’s freshman center with a bad ankle who made it look easy at the offensive end.

The center was not the reason for the collapse---it was bad shots by Temple and 3 straight wide open 3s for Belmont.

I did not say he was the reason for Temple's collapse, just that he was a big factor in the game and could not be stopped inside. He provided much of the offense until McClain got hot. In the end, Temple could not sustain the defense they opened the game with and they relied to much on Alston who forced too many shots down the stretch. Sadly, watching this was all too familiar. I really wanted to see Fran go out in a better note.
On this topic, here is a bit of Dana O'Neil's piece in the Athletic today:
I say all of this to explain the essence of the two men who have been summarily cast aside by their respective universities. Both exude class. It’s a shame their schools couldn’t do the same.
Feel free to make a case that both Dunphy and Martelli didn’t win enough games in recent years to keep their jobs. That’s fine. Both, however, deserved to be treated better. Dunphy was handed an awkward exit plan about a year ago, the news leaking that Aaron McKie would be his successor before Dunphy had even spoken with his family. He played along with his so-called retirement, though he told me last year that he hoped he’d somehow remain in the game. It’s not hard to read between those lines. This was Temple’s way to oust the coach.

This was a lousy matchup for Temple. They still could have won, but they looked particularly ugly against Belmont for a lot of the same reasons they looked ugly against Penn. Belmont was the number 19 offensive team in the country this year.
3-17 is 3-17. But Dunphy’s teams were probably only favored 3 times. Yes, the odds say you should win some games when you aren’t favored, so when you get that many bites at the Apple you ought to win a couple more. But that’s probably all the odds really say overall — that he should have won 4-5 instead of 3.
Too bad, but predictable. As I said to my kids before the game, “Now let’s sit down as a family and watch one last heartbreaking loss for Coach Dunphy.â€

There was a clear difference in the sophistication of the two teams' offenses. Belmont was running all kinds of stuff with spacing and cutting and crisp passing, and their coach kept intimating during the halftime and postgame interviews that he saw all kinds of little correctable technical mistakes on offense that his team was making. Temple's offense often looked like players making an individual move and then seeking a passing outlet if it didn't work, leading to some bad possessions and forced shots.

That is absolutely true. Not really a game coaching issue though. That’s approach over time and personnel. At this point, the way Temple plays offense is kind of the way they play offense. They’re not going to come out and suddenly play a pretty team concept.

Taking bad shots 10 seconds into the shot clock with a 2nd half lead is a game coaching issue. Back in the day, Fran would have yanked anyone who took some of the shots taken by Temple after they came back to take a 5 point lead. I think he just was tired.

Temple in Dayton 03-21-19 11:17 AM - Post#282322
In response to palestra38
Some guys yes, some guys no. The guys taking the “bad†shots for Temple were the equivalents of Maloney, Allen, or Jordan, who all had lots of rope. I also think the offense Dunphy ran at Temple isn’t really the same as what he did at Penn. it became much more of a hero ball concept, starting with Christmas that first or second year. Alston just wasn’t going to come out.
But more importantly, when did Temple take a bad shot 10 seconds into the shot clock? After they surged ahead by 5, all of their shots were at least 20 seconds into the shot clock until the lead was lost.

This comment aged well. Belmont came as close to winning today as a losing team could. Too bad it was forced to play one of the Thursday afternoon games (they couldn't have given them at least until the evening?) after winning in Dayton on Tuesday night. Maryland is fortunate to advance.
And Murray State with Ja is a force.
