Back and forth game in Dayton against Belmont team favored by about 3, but Temple played pretty poorly to close the half down 6 (gave up bucket with a few seconds left).
Still very winnable but Temple will need to turn them over more and hit a better % of 3s to win it.
Hope they do or it will be a rather sad end to Dunphy’s run (though ironically appropriate based on criticisms of his NCAA record).

OTOH, Pete Rose made more outs than anyone else in MLB history. You have to be doing something right to be the "losingest coach in NCAA tournament history".

Yeah, you do have to get there...but, still just terrible. Temple looks very familiar...too much dribbling, not enough passing, poor shot selection. Vintage Dunph.

The vintage Dunph Penn NCAA tourney days for sure. Being right in the game until some crucial stage in the 2nd half, then running out of gas.

This looks like classic Dunphy NCAA game. Back and forth and melt down the stretch...
Shame but while Belmont is ranked a little better, these are pretty much even teams, so can’t use the “his team’s were always lower seeds†excuse.
I mean, the announcers just said Belmont has literally never won a tournament game. This is Temple, one of the winningest programs in NCAA history.
I LOVE Dunphy and LOVE what he did at Penn, but you can’t fault Temple on this. Bottom line is that he just didn’t recruit well enough, and in my opinion one of his best qualities, loyalty, is what held him back. He should have let Dave Duke “retire†off into the sunset a long time ago and brought in a lead recruiter when they moved to American.
Really disappointing end to a fantastic career (outside of NCAAs).

Not fair. He had much success in his coaching career.
When it came to tourney games, was very good at preparing his teams. The big weakness was always making adjustments as the game progressed.

That may have been some of the worst down-the-stretch basketball I have ever seen. I don't think they made a good basketball decision after they went on their run and had a 5 point lead. And it was on both ends of the court---terrible quick flat 3 pointers without a chance on offense and consistently out of place on defense.
Belmont played OK, but I don't think they were as good as Penn before the freshmen got hurt. Decent ball movement, and not great D. Temple should have beaten this team.

I did not say he was the reason for Temple's collapse, just that he was a big factor in the game and could not be stopped inside. He provided much of the offense until McClain got hot. In the end, Temple could not sustain the defense they opened the game with and they relied to much on Alston who forced too many shots down the stretch. Sadly, watching this was all too familiar. I really wanted to see Fran go out in a better note.
On this topic, here is a bit of Dana O'Neil's piece in the Athletic today:
I say all of this to explain the essence of the two men who have been summarily cast aside by their respective universities. Both exude class. It’s a shame their schools couldn’t do the same.
Feel free to make a case that both Dunphy and Martelli didn’t win enough games in recent years to keep their jobs. That’s fine. Both, however, deserved to be treated better. Dunphy was handed an awkward exit plan about a year ago, the news leaking that Aaron McKie would be his successor before Dunphy had even spoken with his family. He played along with his so-called retirement, though he told me last year that he hoped he’d somehow remain in the game. It’s not hard to read between those lines. This was Temple’s way to oust the coach.
