Dez is a great talent and I certainly wish he wasn’t leaving. But thankfully, 2019 Ivy Coach of he Year Mike Martin has the program in good place. Guards Anderson, Hunsaker, and GMK return. Although none possess the athleticism and shot blocking of Cambridge, they can all score and play decent defense in a team concept. Two of the guards coming in this year were rated in the top 10 best players in their respective states of Illinois and Michigan. Friday is a strong, physical 6-4 220 pound player with a high motor while 6-4 Cowan is a silky smooth shooter with a great mid-range game and enjoys playing defense. Sophmore to be Shaughnessy was rated the top player in MA and has lots of promise.

The front court will be anchored by 2nd team All-Ivy Choh, Howard, Mitchell, and DeWolf. Gainey will continue to add weight and may be able to offer 12 to 15 minutes of shot blocking and defense. In coming forward Kogelnik has grow to 6-7 and is a strong kid with a good outside shot and a desire to play hard be a leader.

One area of need is more offense and size from the C and / or PF position. A 6-9 Cedric K would be ideal. I’m sure Martin and his staff are beating the bushes for just such a player.

There were games this year when Dez was off his game, and the Bears still found ways to win. One of those was Obie, who will be missed for sure. But others will be back with a year of experience and will be ready to step up and keep the program moving forward. Dez is a tough loss. But it should not be a knockout punch for the program.
