The Chaminade boys’ basketball team lost to Loyola on Wednesday 74-80 and beat St. Francis on Friday 85-52. Currently, the Eagles are in 3rd place in the Mission League and ranked # 4 in CIFSS DIV IIIA. With a record of 16-5 overall and 5-3 in league, the eagles are looking to finish the final 4 games strong and hope to earn a top 6 seed in the playoffs. Senior Zach Evans continued his solid season scoring 15 points while grabbing 12 rebounds against Loyola and getting 14 and 12 versus St. Francis. In the St. Francis game he also had 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks while sitting out the 4th quarter.

Evans had 22 pts and 12 rebounds in a relatively close win Monday. His Chaminade team is now 17-5 overall and 6-3 in a tough LA area league. Their three losses have been to one of the state's top teams, Harvard-Westlake, which features 6'10" center Alex Stepheson, a North Carolina signee, and two close losses to Loyola (LA). Evans, by the way, although a wing forward, is also Chaminade's tallest player and likely had to guard Stepheson, at least part of the time, when they played Harvard-Westlake. In that game he had 12 points and 5 rebounds before fouling out.

For the season, Evans' numbers look like this:

PPG = 14.4 .. (leads team)
RPG = 9.4 .. (leads team)
BPG = 2.1 .. (leads team)
SPG = 1.5
APG = 1.3

FG Pct = 50%
FT Pct = 62%
3-pt Pct = 16%

The last number, although the sample size is small, seems to confirm the scouting report on Evans. Very athletic, good defender and rebounder, runs the floor well, so-so outside shot.

For anyone who wants more history, there are several posts on the old VoyForum board.

unfortunately, so-so apears to be kind at his point based on those percentages. thought the write-ups said he had a decent mid-range game though.

Some of the scouting services have commented on his outside shooting needing work. A friend of mine who saw him play in December had the same opinion. For example, from Scout.com last year:

"Zach Evans, 6-6 JR SF West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade, is an intriguing prospect with great potential. He's got good size and a very good feel for the game. With an improved shot, he could be a player that emerges as a top prospect in the next year."

And this year: "Lanky wing with a nice feel for the game. Outside shot needs work, but versatile player. Will defend, rebound -- plays unselfishly. Mid major prospect with a chance to go higher."

Flannery's press release praised him for a lot of talents but did not mention his shooting: . . . "Zach is an extremely athletic player who has gone up against some outstanding competition in California," commented Flannery. "Zach made a great impression on our staff when we saw him in Las Vegas this summer. He simply knows how to play the game. He can play the `3' and is a long, versatile defender."

The University of Minnesota's athletic site had a big write-up on Evans when the Gophers were still looking at him over the summer. That article indicated he had been bothered by a somewhat serious ankle injury for much of his junior year. It then evaluated his game, largely based on glowing quotes from his coach. This evaluation does praise his mid-range jump shot but says he is "beginning" to extend his range, which I interpret as meaning the longer range shooting is suspect:

"Evans is a player that has really worked on and established his mid-range jumpshot, one of basketball's lost arts. He's also began to extend his range out near the three-point line. Evans is one of the better offensive rebounders you will find in the country as his ability to raise above the rim helps him secure boards and finish on put-backs or off of penetration. "He will be a combo wing player in college," said Cantwell. "He can really get up and dunk on people or score over them when he's going to the basket using his long arms and quick leaping ability. It's hard to play him because he has that mid-range game where he can also just pull up and shoot it. On defense he's aggressive on the ball and we have him guarding point guards and two guards to get him ready for the next level. Another one of his great abilities is to get open and in the right spots on the floor quickly so he can get his shot off."

"To get better, Zach needs to not always rely on his athletic ability and height to get boards. He has to continue to learn to get better at boxing his guy out and finishing the defensive possession. Zach also has to get a lot stronger to get ready to play on the next level."

....................

In any event, there seems to be no question that he is athletic, jumps well, plays tough D, and runs the court well. A lot of those skills can't be taught. More range on the shot can be. As I recall, although my memory could be faulty, Charles Lee did not have great shooting range when he arrived either. It is ironic that Behan, who at 6'8" is the tallest of the three Bison recruits, easily has the best long-range shooting touch. He supposedly can fill it up from beyond the arc. That will be a nice change of pace vis-a-vis Mastropaolo.

BTW, since I posted I see that Evans' 3-point pct has gone from 16% up to 18%! (6 of 34)

Evans - Last 2 Regular Season Games

Chaminade finished its regular season with a loss to Harvard-Westlake, one of California's top teams, and then a win over Alemany. Evans' stats for those two games:

Vs Harvard: .. 10 pts, 8 rebounds, 0 blocks, 4 steals, 3 assists, 1 turnover.
(note: Chaminade's only other tall player has not played recently (injury?) so I assume Evans had to guard Alex Stephesen, the 6'10" center who has signed with North Carolina; Stephesen had 32 rebounds!)

Vs Alemany: .. 19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals, 1 assist, 1 turnover.

its exciting to have athletes like this coming into the program. i wish we had someone who could watch their games for us, though. i suspect donald and jason are both going to get some time at the 3 next year, but one of the newcomers is going to have to step up and get minutes there, too (with jason and donald being key contributers at their more natural positions). both evans both look like good enough defenders to step on the court right away... but their offensive games appear to be 'raw' at the moment.

if abe and donald can both take their offensive games to the next level this summer, im not worried. but if not, we will only have two real offensive threats on the court next year... and that worries me.

(im not forgetting behan, by the way... i just think hes going to get some minutes at the 4 when needed (mastropaolo gets time at the 5, donald gets time at the 3, et cetera).)

Of the three recruits, it is ironic that the best outside shooter by far appears to be the PF, Patrick Behan. According to the scouting reports,he is a great 3-point shooter while Evans and Tyree, although great athletes, struggle from long-range.

Evans' stats for Chaminade's first game in states, an easy win:

17 pts
12 rebs
4 blocks
2 steals
2 assist
2 turnovers

Based on the scoring, it appears that he probably sat much or all of the final quarter.

Evans led his Chaminade team to a 67-65 OT win and was named one of the L.A. Daily News' Athletes of the Week. He had 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots, including two blocks of potential game-winners in the final seconds of regulation. His other stats have not yet been posted. Chaminade next plays a 23-5 team (Oak Park), who beat them in a non-league game early in the season.

HoopTime has a mention of this today as well.
