4 pm Sunday

Providence is a 121 RPI team – there are the lowest RPI team remaining in Penn’s quadrant. They are 18-15 overall – 9-11 Big East

Common Opponents (3-1)

Beat Yale 59-42 at home in November – Penn won 55-48 at home – 65-56 at Yale

Beat LaSalle 77-47 at home in December – Penn win 65-34 at hom
e
Beat Villanova 67-71 at home in January – Penn lost at home 58-50

Lost Villanova 53-33 at Nova in February

5 Top 100 RPB Wins:

Villanova (RPI 57) at home

Butler (RPI 74) 74-68 at home – 66-63 at Butler

Creighton (RPI 94) 77-63 at Creighton

Pepperdine (RPI 99) 66-47 at home

Seniors Guards: Providence is led by two senior guards (Nojic, BE Honorable Mention, & Jolin) who combined average 25 points per game and shoot 40% from 3 abd 80%+ from the line.

There are no juniors on a team that plays 10 deep per game – 2 seniors – 4 sophomores – 4 freshman see 10+ min a game

Freshman Forwards: Eleah should be able to dominate the middle as Providence only has two forwards (both freshman – Baskerville, BE Rookie of Year - All Freshman team, & Geary) over 5-10 and combined they play 31 min a game and score 12 points. Eleah has 94 blocks – the Friars as a team have 116

Quick Guards: Providence also has two 5-4 guards (Webb - All freshman team - & Williams) that play 21 min a game and combine for 14 points – most likely they are lightening quick, and Penn will have to keep in front on defense.

Perimeter defense will be key, as the Friars are 6-1 when making 10 or more treys a game. Nojic takes 50% of the treys with Jolin taking 25% and Webb 25%.

If you have to foul, its Baskerville (56%) or Williams (66%)

Thanks to JDP and RBG for finding all that out. If they are that good from 3, this is not a favorable matchup, unless we just shoot the lights out ourselves.

Anyhoo, the wife and I are going out for a walk on this glorious day in the Philly area, and we probably won't return in time for tip-off, so feel free to offer commentary!

Such a sparse looking crowd, though. How is Providence hosting?

8-7 Providence at the first media TO.

Quakers with a few good feeds inside for baskets.

Big issues so far:

--Sterba already with 2 fouls

--Quaker bigs turning the ball over when putting the ball on the floor....Providence double teaming and looking to strip them of the ball.

13-9 Providence after 1.

Quakers seem to be winning the time of possession battle. Getting a lot of second chances. Getting Providence to foul. Our bigs are causing them problems inside. But few points to result from this as yet.

19-16 Providence with a timeout on the court. 6:05 to play and Penn will be at the line to shoot 2.

Game is opening up more. Baskerville just picked up her 2nd foul (Baskerville Holmes, where are you now?).

Providence 21-18 with 4:17 left to play.

Princess hit a 3 for Penn but that has been it from distance from either side. Penn staying in the game by solid job on the boards, but they have been sloppy with some of their passes and ball possession.

Ugly end to the half, a turnover with second to play leading to a missed Providence layup but a follow up rebound at the buzzer. 29-20.

Providence daring Penn to shoot from distance, going zone. So far, aside from a long Russell two and a Princess 3, the shooting has been pretty miserable.

Providence finished 2nd quarter on 10-2 run and that was when Baskerville (13 pts and 7 rebounds) went to the bench.

Penn outrebounding them 24-19, but shooting 25 percent (and 1-10 from 3).

They were also outworking Providence on the offensive end and getting fouled but it didn't end up getting them at the line very much or getting them many points. At least not yet.

Majority of the Penn baskets (only had 8) were layups from nice feeds from outside to either a posted big or a cutter.

27-38 at the media timeout and things are not looking much better.

Providence finally hit a 3--a long one, and a jumper at that. So far our bigs haven't been able to do significant damage.

The guards are now doing most of the damage--rebounding, driving and scoring. Down only 38-37 after 3. Both teams playing zone to force the guards to beat them.

Nogic has hit her third 3 for Providence. Each one has been well, well beyond the arc. Each one a jumper. Each one nothing but net.

47-42 Providence, 7 minutes to go.
