I don't think Toole has any shot at the job.

On the other hand, I wonder if Langel should hold out for a better opportunity. If he's not at a peak in his cycle up there in Hamilton, would it be worth waiting for a MAC or AAC opportunity in a year or two?

How does a job at one of the smallest D1 schools with sub-standard facilities (but part of the Big 5), stack up against other mid-majors?

Does St. Joe's have "natural" advantages to sell within their conference? I don't know much about the A10 these days.

I think the Big 5 is a huge advantage, but then again I don't know if current players care about it as much as we
do.

I love St. Joes. It's an excellent educational institution, and they have a quality basketball program with a great history and pretty classy fans. All that said, I wonder if the HC job there doesn't have failure baked into right now. They conference they play in seems to be a bit of a mess, and, as has been pointed out above, I suspect that the facilities and financial resources in place are insufficient. As much affection as I feel toward the Hawks, I'm not sure it's in Langel's or Toole's interest to take that coaching job.

It would be in either of their interests as a stepping stone. It is unlikely that either will get a Power Conference job from either Robert Morris or Colgate. And both of them have ties, recruiting and otherwise, to this area. St. Joe's does have some issues though. But succeed there and there would be a Power Conference job available.

One of the unknowns here is what charge was given to the new AD and what resources will be given to the new head coach as this is SJU's marquee sport. That could make a big difference in how either perceives the job. One unknown, particularly in Matt's case is how his family likes living in upstate NY - people said the same thing about Fran O'Hanlon when he first went to Lafayette yet he is still there 20 years later.

I realize it's the marquee sport, but St. Josephs isn't a wealthy institution, and there may be limits as to how deep their pockets can be. That's why I wonder if success is possible here.

Is Loyola of Chicago any wealthier?

According to Wikipedia, St. Joe's has an endowment of $280m (8,000 students), while Loyola has an endowment of $750m (16,000 students.)

Loyola is bigger as well. Much more part of the fabric of Chicago than St Joe's is to Philly.

Didn't realize it was that big--it's bigger than Penn (undergraduates).

St. Joes has always been a special part of the Big Five. Like Lasalle a small school without large resources. I hope they can get Langel.

Matt Langel did not get the St. Joe's job, but he did get a contract extension with Colgate through the 2027 season.
