Great article that should answer all the questions that people have asked here on this site. I hope other students (especially athletes) read the article and learn from it (i.e. dealing with pressure, being a leader, seeking needed assistance). Wishing Devin Cannady all the best during this next phase of his life.

If true, it is good to see Devin get an opporunity. Needless to say, he will have to shoot lights out on 3 pointers to even have a prayer for a NBA career but Europe will obviosuly be a good option for him.

Yeah, each NBA team places around 15 players on their summer league roster, and only a few will make the NBA team. And most of those that do are the draft picks from this year and last year. But it's still a great opportunity to audition for the G-League or international teams.

Cannady worked out for 6 NBA teams and received a summer league invite. For comparison, recent Princeton players, such as Cook, Bell, and Weisz, only had 1-2 NBA workouts and no summer league invitations, but still found good opportunities to play professionally overseas.

If he gets in one of those can’t-miss zones, somebody will give him a look. Shooting ability is rising as a commodity in the league.

No minutes for Devin. Oni scored 17 for Utah. If Oni shot like that against LSU, round 2 for Yale.

Oni is playing a little to passive but he has skills. Devin somehow needs to get on the floor.

While the box scores for the two Thunder summer league games do show zero minutes, Cannady has played about ~20 seconds in each of the two games. He played the last 20 seconds of the first half in Game 1, where they ran a play for him, but he missed the three. He did get a rebound on the defensive end. In Game 2, he played the last 16 seconds of the first quarter, again with the idea that he would take a three on the final possession, but the team turned the ball over.

The Thunder shot a horrendous 2-29 on threes in Game 2, and their opponent actually played zone against them for while, so maybe Devin will get a chance soon. Hopefully the Croatia game on Tuesday.

In 1985 there was a summer league held at Jadwin Gym. The NJ Nets signed Craig Robinson to their summer squad. My girlfriend and I went to Jadwin to see Robinson play against pro competition.

THERE WAS NO AIR CONDITIONING in Jadwin. We sat there. My girlfriend and I. In the sweltering heat. Watching the Frickin' Nets. Waiting for Craig. Who got a DNP-Coach's decision.

Since that day, I refuse to get excited about Tigers getting to play summer league ball. Not even Devin.

(Spoiler: She married me anyway.)

I caught the end of the first half last night, and he was put in for the last play for 4 seconds or so. The ball never came his way.

Is the coach just throwing him a bone?

I think the Thunder know Cannady can shoot, but they haven't been willing to use him in regular game situations. Perhaps they think his size makes him a liability of defense. At those end-of-quarter situations after a timeout, they're just hoping to get him an open look for a three, since he probably is their best three point shooter.

Cannady is probably setting some type of +/- record per minute:
Game 1: +3 (0 minutes)
Game 2: +0 (0 minutes)
Game 3: +2 (0 minutes)
Game 4: +2 (0 minutes)

In fairness besides his size, Devin was never a great defender even at the IL level. He turned into a very good rebounder as he enjoyed leaping for the ball. He always seemed less inclined on the defensive end of the ball.

Devin commented that he worked on his defense prior to the draft. Not sure if he simply was not that good at it from a skill set or simply had less interest in defense vs. offense.

Reality is that you need to have defensive capabilities to compete at this level. Hopefully, he can demonstrate defensive skills down the road for his professional career no mater where it is.

Yes, Cannady led the Thunder with 12 points in a 68-67 win. Shot 4-9 from three, and added 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in 20 minutes. He easily was the best (only?) outside shooter on the team.

I got to watch some of his time on the floor--he was ready to shoot, for sure.

He also expended a lot of energy on defense, but they easily pick and rolled him into a mismatch down low.

This time he was on the bench for the last (successful) scoring play by OKC.

Cannady is a great shooter. He only needs to put in effort on the defensive side and he will be fine in any league he ends up playing in.

He does indeed have a beautiful pure shooting stroke. He had more open looks in the last summer NBA game than he had last year in the IL.

In this last game, he played more minutes as a shooting guard vs. a point guard and that is one of the issues with Devin and the pro game besides his defense. Just not a great fit for him and the NBA but man, he can shoot the rock.

Devin Cannady is off to a good start with the Long Island Nets in the G League. In the first two games, he has scored a total of 39 points, including 8-20 (40%) on threes and 8-8 on free throws. He's also chipped in 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. He made 6-6 free throws down the stretch to clinch the Nets' first win.

Devin was on campus Wednesday night. He will be working on finishing his degree this school year and appeared in excellent spirits.

His main talking point about his recent play is his Defense -- very proud of how he is playing D in the developmental league. He had the athleticism to play D at Princeton but did not go totally in.

His offensive skills are sorely missed based on what we are seeing on the court so far this year.

Nice video story of Devin Cannady, who has completed his Princeton graduation requirements and will walk with the graduates this summer, while also playing for the G-League Long Island Nets. Cannady is averaging 14.3 pts/game while shooting 37.1% on threes and 90.2% on free throws.

Thanks. I’m glad that Devin didn’t allow one bad mistake to mess up his pursuit of his degree. We’ll never know what might have been if that incident at the Wawa had never happened. But it appears that Devin has recovered and matured from the experience. That is the most important thing. Good luck, Devin.

The Orlando Magic announced yesterday that they've signed Cannady to what appears to be an Exhibit 10 contract. He'll be on the training camp and preseason roster with them before likely playing with their G League team this season

Cannady's Orlando Magic team opens their pre season schedule at 7 eastern tonight against the Atlanta Hawks. The Magic carried 20 players for training camp, with Cannady probably towards the back end of the depth chart as he's on an Exhibit 10 contract, but hopefully he's able to see some minutes in the preseason.

A pretty encouraging debut for Cannady with Orlando! Got 7 minutes in their pre season opener (a 116-112 win over Atlanta), but perhaps the best sign is that those 7 minutes came with the regulars during the 3rd quarter of a close game, and not in the final 6ish minutes where both teams played G League players.

Cannady came in and immediately blocked a Kevin Huerter jump shot and then hit a fastbreak 3 off of a nice ball fake. The biggest thing that stands out is his size, especially as he's mostly playing off ball at this level, so he's often matching up with 6'5"+ wings.

Devin started off as the 6th man at the beginning of the season for Lakeland Magic - G league. He earned a starting role and over the past number of games. He is now getting the most amount of minutes on a team that has gone on a winning streak to clinch a playoff spot.

His shooting has not been consistent - one on/one off but his overall floor game has improved significantly including his defense. The major problem for him down the road is that he plays shooting guard and not the point and with his height that is a problem although he has been getting 5 to 6 assists per game of late. He is also rebounding well.

His game just does not match up well for the NBA but he is getting closer to earning a shot.

Cannady's three point shooting has edged up to an even 40% success rate, while his scoring is at 11.7 points per game.

Cannady's Lakeland Magic team will play in the G-League semifinals today at 7 PM ET on ESPNU against the Santa Cruz Warriors (featuring Jeremy Lin).

Cannady scored 14 points in Lakeland's semifinal win, and it's on to the Finals tomorrow against the Delaware Blue Coats. Lots of familiar names on the Blue Coats for college basketball fans - Paul Reed (DePaul), Isaiah Joe (Arkansas/76ers), Braxton Key (Virginia), Justin Robinson (VaTech), Ivan Rabb (Cal Berkeley).

The game is on Thursday on ESPN2 at 4:30 ET.
