According to Newsday, former Arkansas coach Mike Anderson has accepted the St. John's job.

https://www.newsday.com/sports/college/st-joh ns/mi...

I think Jones is an excellent coach, but I don't think this was the right one to leave Yale. It's a total mess and rebuild right now and is a program whose best years seem to be in the past.

Thankfully, Jones did not get the offer. Maybe the interview process caused Yale to open up its wallet to give him a raise.

Yale has lost out on football coaches because they refuse to pay market rates.

- Jones has three recruits on campus this weekend, and he was a bit miffed about how word spread so rapidly that he might be leaving for St. John’s.

“You have a conversation with people, things go sideways and everybody thinks you’re leaving,” he said. “All this misinformation because people are dying for a story. When you’re dealing with stuff like this, it’s important you keep it whole and the kids know you’re invested in them. The last thing I want is for the kids to think I don’t want to be here.” -

There's nothing wrong with the coach exploring other opportunities, but he shouldn't be surprised or miffed that word got out that he was interviewing for a Big East program in the nation's largest city that was suddenly in the national spotlight.

Also, if you don't want a kid to think you don't want to be at Yale, then don't take the interview at St. John's. A kid looking to go to Harvard probably thinks that there is a chance that Amaker could leave for Duke or another prestigious high major program, but otherwise feels confident that the coach will be staying at Harvard.

With Jones interviewing for a high major program that has serious problems on the court and within its leadership, it would be understandable for any kid looking at Yale to think that Jones might be tempted to go to any higher major program that comes calling.

- It sounds like Fordham has met with as many as 18 candidates via a combination of Zoom and on campus interviews. Some sources have told me that Bryant’s Jared Grasso is no longer a candidate. I’ve also heard that Fordham may break the bank for someone like Yale’s James Jones. More on this one as I hear it. -

Fordham Search Update
18 MAR 2021

https://hoopdirt.com/fordham-search-update /

The search at Fordham has been narrowed down to a final group, and the decision could be made by as early as tomorrow. I’ve talked to a bunch of people around it, and here is what I’ve heard:

Tony Barbee (associate to the head coach Kentucky): Word on the street is that he is in the top half of the final group.

Carmen Maciariello (head coach Siena): Heard he’s gained a lot of momentum here of the past week or so.

Kyle Neptune (assistant coach Villanova): Multiple sources say Jay Wright is making a hard (hard) push for Neptune here.

Jared Grasso (head coach Bryant): – He’s being reported as “among the finalists”, but I’m still hearing that he’s out.

James Jones (head coach Yale): Sounds like he is/was the top guy, but most likely staying put?

Matt Langel (head coach Colgate): In the mix, but not sure where.

John Becker (head coach Vermont): See Langel above.

Nothing Friday or so far today about Fordham, but here's something from late Thursday afternoon.

SOURCES: Fordham is focusing on four candidates: Shaheen Holloway, James Jones, Jared Grasso and Kyle Neptune. The hope is a new coach will be in place by early next week. Tony Barbee and Carmen Maciariello were in final round of interviews.

All six candidates have been interviewed twice by Fordham, source says.

(Shaheen Holloway is the coach at St. Peter's. He played at Seton Hall and was an assistant at Iona & Seton Hall)

Jones is not mentioned in today's reports on the coaching carousel from Adam Zagoria and Matt Norlander.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamzagoria/202 1/03/2...

- FORDHAM: This was by all accounts a messy and confusing situation with Villanova’s Kyle Neptune, Bryant’s Jared Grasso, Siena’s Carmen Maciariello and Saint Peter’s Shaheen Holloway all involved to replace Jeff Neubauer, who was fired in January. It appears that Neptune is the presumed favorite, but the Wildcats are still in the Sweet 16 against No. 1 Baylor so nothing has happened just yet. The new coach will need to think outside of the box in recruiting and use the transfer portal to make Fordham relevant in the Atlantic 10. -

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/ne ws/...

- Jeff Neubauer went 61-104 from the start of the 2015-16 season and was was fired Jan. 26. Fordham remains among the toughest jobs in a multi-bid league. The school joined the Atlantic 10 in 1995; it's failed to make the NCAAs since. In fact, it's had just two seasons above. 500 in that span. It would not be a shock if this job did not close for at least two more weeks. -

Over the last few years, Jones has been mentioned as a serious candidate for GW, St. John's and Fordham. If Hoop Dirt is correct, he was the main target for Fordham.

Is Jones interested in finishing his career at Yale & using these opportunities for improved contracts or is it just a matter of time before he finds the right match & leaves the league?

If he can get St John's, I cannot see him turning it down. The others (and certainly Fordham, which is a death pit of a job), I can.

Why would he interview for a job only to turn it down? That makes no sense.

Complete speculation here, but to renegotiate with his existing employer? Wouldn't be a bad strategy to get a raise. Hasn't that actually happened one of those last times where he publicly got an extension after?

Fordham is absolutely a place "coaches go to die" though aka fail and lose their coaching career, so would have been an odd choice for him.

It happens all the time. You listen--and you never know who is going to offer so much that you cannot turn it down, but it demonstrates your marketability to anyone looking for a coach. It never hurts to interview for a job, even if you think it's not a really good situation. At worst, it helps establish your market value.

Would Fordham have been an upgrade for Langel? Doesn't seem obvious to me.

It's an upgrade, but one from which it's usually downhill from there.
