USA Basketball announced the roster for the Women's Pan American Games team today, and Bella Alarie has made the team. They had started with 35 players and narrowed the list down to the final 12 today after a week of practices and scrimmages. Alarie is the only player not from a Power 5 conference.

Bella is a unique talent who may be a point forward in the WNBA at 6'5". She is currently projected as a 1st round, 5-6 pick, in several mock drafts.

The Pan American games may take her game to the next level based on the competition. Her game improved significanty after international competition at age 19.

NY Times article back on March 15th did an excellent job in highlighting her development as a player.

Hopefully, she will be healthy in her senior season. She will continue to be a treat to watch.

I believe that game #1 is tomorrow evening. It will interesting to see how many minutes receives and if she is a starter. Considerable amount of talent on the women's team including "bigs".

Should be a good test to measure her game. She did lead U.S. team in blocked shots at trials and her overall stats were good.

Bella did not start but did receive 25 minutes, third highest on the team. She played tentatively especially in the 1st half and was not active offensively other than 4 offensive rebounds. Tempo and pace of the game seemed to present challenges to her in the 1st half.

Played better in the second half and was a significant contributer during the 3rd quarter turnaround. stats: 6 pts on 3 of 8 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and no blocked shots.

It will be interesting to see if she steps up her game. For 6'5", she looked very athletic but her game at this level is as a forward. Argentina is good and this level of competition should help her in Bella's final year as a Tiger.

It was a fast paced and physical game. The US was down 8 in the 3rd quarter, but did well to take control.

Alarie definitely improved in the second half. It seemed that they played her more at center late in the game, but she didn't seem to physically be able to handle Argentina at that position. When she came away from the post on defense, she did much better - including a couple of really nice steals and breakaway layups.

I agree that she will have to be more of a 4 or possibly a 3 when she goes pro. Watching the WNBA, it seems that she will need to have an improved three point game.

3 point shooting
2016-2017 39-103 .379
2017-2018 22-67 .328
2018-2019 13-44 .295

It will be interesting to see how the new coach can help her get that part of her game back in her senior year.

Last two minutes in the 3rd quarter captures her abilities especially jumping out to steal the ball with a few seconds left in the 3rd quarter - outrace and dribble the entire length of the court and make a left hand lay up at 6'5".

As you say, she does not play as a Center with a 6'5" frame but she will in the IL next season plus play every other position.

It was dissapointing that Coach Banghart did not have her bring the ball up against Kentucky last year at critical times as Littlefield could not handle the press -- one of her few coaching mistakes.

50 pt win against weak competition. Bella was first off the bench and scored 8 pts in 1st half on 4 of 5 shooting. Sat on the bench for vast majority of 2nd half probably due to 30 pt lead at halftime.

She looked much more comfortable and played like a point forward -- passing the ball but not taking shots. Camera was on her a lot during the 1st half.

Still looks a bit of uncomfortable and not very aggressive on the offensive end but that may be her role on this team. Considerable talent on the women's team.

USA had very tough 3 pt win to get into the gold medal game. Bella was on the floor for the entire 4th quarter and played an important role in the win especially in the final two minutes. Coach put a lot of faith in her and she delivered.

Her role on this team is defense and rebounding. She does not look for her shot although last night in the 4th quarter, she had a look on her face and became more aggressive on the offensive end.

Tournament should toughen her up for the upcoming season. Not too many IL players have gotten this type of opportunity in the past.

Interesting, though, that in last night's game she was often matched up against a very familiar player, Isalys Quinones, who just graduated from Dartmouth:

So, the League was adequately represented on the floor last night.

USA loses by 6 to Brazil in final. Coach Merchant believed that Brazil guards outplayed USA guards which they did.

Bella was on the court for 28 minutes and played virtually the entire fourth quarter. She had an off game shooting 2-10 with 8 rebounds and two assists. Missed two easy put backs.

She has a fair amount of work in front of her to raise her offensive game to be ready for the next level. Pan American games competition is clearly at another level for IL and she probably learned a few things from this experience.
