Still no word on a assistant coach? Hopefully our reciting efforts haven't taken a hit with the loss in staff.

Thanks Joe

Word on the street is that former Michigan director of player personnel Chinedu Nwachukwu is the leader for an open assistant spot at Dartmouth. He had been on John Beilein’s staff since 2016-17, and was the DBO at Milwaukee before that.

Former U-M head basketball manager, Chinedu Nwachukwu, returned to Ann Arbor in 2017 and begins his second season as the Wolverines Director of Program Personnel.

Prior to his return to U-M, Nwachukwu spent the 2016-17 season as the Director of Operations at Milwaukee with former U-M assistant and current Butler head coach LaVall Jordan. With the Panthers, he coordinated team travel, budget, practices and other program functions. Prior to his move to Milwaukee, Nwachukwu spent four seasons at Saginaw Valley State University as an assistant coach under Randy Baruth.

After going 21-30 during his first two seasons at SVSU, Nwachukwu helped the Cardinals go 46-17 during his final two campaigns. In 2015-16, SVSU posted a school-record 25 victories (25-8) while claiming the programs fourth-ever GLIAC championship and the first since the school transitioned to the Division II level 25 years prior.

The Cardinals added their first-ever Midwest Regional Championship and a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, all coming in the team's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Additionally, SVSU notched a school-record 18 GLIAC wins en route to the team's first title since the 1984-85 season.

In the 2014-15 season, SVSU posted a 21-9 overall record, including a 16-6 mark in the GLIAC, which at the time was a program record. The Cardinals qualified for the 2015 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, where they defeated Findlay for the team's first victory in the tournament and berth in the semifinals since 1996-97.

Before joining the SVSU staff in 2012, he served as an assistant coach and head coach of the junior varsity team at the University of Findlay for two seasons. Before heading to Findlay, Nwachukwu spent three years as a student manager with the Wolverine basketball program under Beilein.

A native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Nwachukwu graduated from Father Gabriel Richard High School in 2006. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Michigan in economics in 2010 and followed with his master's degree in business administration from Findlay in 2012.

Oh well. Quit before he even started? From a distance, we are starting to look like a badly run organization.

So our three assistants graduated college in 2012, 2013, and 2014, with a combined three years of in-game assistant coaching experience. That seems...green? Youth is not necessarily a bad thing, of course, especially if it translates into energy and fresh ideas. But I'm curious how it compares with other Ivy League staffs.

Flinder, I did check the rest of the Ivy League coaching staffs. There were several key differences. First, the balance of the league had several assistants with extensive prior college coaching experience. Second, the other teams in particular had more experience coaching and playing for D1 teams. Dartmouth's experience is focused on D3 programs. Third, the other teams has several players who had highly accomplished playing careers, including at elite D1 programs. Based on the combination above, it would be prudent to eventually recruit a coach with deeper ties to the D1 basketball communities.

If it translated into fresh ideas does anyone believe they'd ever be implemented? If McLaughlin "forced" out Andrzejek because he was too strong and opinionated it's hard to believe we're bringing in coaches that would be anything but understudies. I hope I'm wrong. From the tenor of the posts I gather none are impressed with this announcement.

Nothing McLaughlin has done has impressed me yet. Not one bit - rattled in game, high staff turnover, etc. Hopefully this is the year it gets turned around.

Is there reason to believe he was forced out? It looks to me like he just got a better job, which would make sense if, as I think you theorized, he was responsible for the offense last year.

My outsider perspective is that Dartmouth was markedly improved last year. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the league was as well, so it didn’t translate to conference victories. But they made a big big jump in Pomeroy and OOC, and the offense was much better. So I think there is positive movement going on.

That said, the lack of D1 experience on the coaching staff has been striking from day one, and doubly surprising for a relatively inexperienced head coach. That could be a preference based on the coach’s inexperience. The other paranoid conspiracy theory i’ve suggested in the past and will raise again is that the Cormier firing didn’t sit well with the coaching establishment, and has made hiring at the D1 level difficult for Dartmouth.

A preference? I think it would be hard to attract experienced D1 coaches to Hanover given the Universities decision making and lack of progress with the program. Plenty of young guys wanting a start would be attracted to it. McLaughlin, who I think is a quality coach and recruiter, doesn't have a profile that would attract experienced coaches either. That said, there is plenty of young coaching talent to build a staff and succeed.

A bunch of assistants on the move in the Ivy league. Will roll with some of these moves shortly, but can confirm that one Ivy assistant will wind up at Howard.

I have heard that Dartmouth assistant Steve Ongley will become an assistant at Howard. Ongley has been at Dartmouth since 2019, and served as an assistant a Ivy League foe Columbia before that.

(Howard head coach Kenny Blakeney and Steve Ongley were both assistants at Columbia during the 2018-2019 season.)
