Any info on the progress of Betley and Jelani?

Are they both playing without restriction?

Jelani was cleared for full participation a few weeks ago. Betley wont' be fully cleared likely until close to the start of the season.

Interesting. I thought Ryan might be back sooner. When he got hurt I researched his type of injury and they projected a 6 month recovery period. Of course that's off the internet which is not always reliable and was not connected to his specific situation.

He had a ruptured patella, which is a very serious injury. https://nationalfootballp ost.com/monday-morning-md... Darren Smith had that injury (actually worse since he fractured his kneecap as well) but it was a 2 year injury for him.

6 months recovery is a low end estimate for when you or I may be able to start participating in a friendly pickup game. Recovery is 1+ years for real athletes.

Knees and shoulders are complicated, much more so than ankles and elbows. You're trying to get a knee or shoulder back to close to where it was pre-injury, it'll never be the same.

There are a few moderately successful recoveries from a ruptured patella but it also impacted/ended the careers of a number of players - Victor Cruz, Antonio McDyess, Greg Oden. Jeremy Lin has a patella injury, the jury's out whether he can recover enough to play in the NBA.

The silver lining is that there are more positive outcomes with younger athletes.

If I remember correctly, I believe Darren suffered a subsequent injury during his rehab, no? Didn't he re-fracture his kneecap, or am I mistaken?

He came back, played well for a while, and then re-injured the knee.

I certainly accept the beginning of the season estimate for starting full participation as the best information provided, but all that was reported back when he got hurt was a patella tendon rupture. We don't always get more detail. Some of these other cases mentioned above involved additional complications like patella fractures.

I've always assumed that Ryan would be at full strength this season but without really knowing the full injury report details, who knows when he'll be ready or how effective he'll be. We will know more in the fall.

As others have mentioned some of these other patella injuries were career ending for certain players. I hope that is not the case here and have been assuming all along that he will recover and be a major contributor this year.

I think Betley will be full go by the start of the season, if not sooner, though that's just my opinion and I am not a doctor. I think Donahue and the staff will be conservative when dealing with Ryan.

I do know he is working out individually and moving well. I don't think we will know if he is 100% this season. His game is more conducive to coming back as he needs to move without the ball and shoot it. I think this offense will suit his recovery just fine. Bigger question is how will he hold up on the defensive end.

Study on NBA players:

Article on Roberson's and Lin's injuries and recovery:

Key points on this injury :
- A 12 month recovery time is typical.
- It's a small sample, but it's clear this is a difficult injury to recover from. Temper performance expectations accordingly.
- We don't know the full extent of the severity Betley's injury so mileage may vary.

It’s the biggest tendon in the body—the end point of the quadriceps. So lots of tissue that needs to heal, even after it’s been sewn back up. And that’s leaving aside peripheral damage that can happen if you had a dislocation of the patella as part of the injury.

I assume like me he also required a full open surgery rather than an arthroscopic procedure, which AFAIK isn’t used in patella repairs unless you have a very small partial tear. So there’s a lot more post surgical scar tissue to break down as well in the initial months of rehab.

In fact, I needed a second procedure to address the tissue buildup because it was inhibiting my rehab: manipulation under anaesthesia, which involves the orthopedic surgeon literally bending the knee to break up the scar tissue after they’ve put you under a general.

Important to remember... college teams have access to very, very good doctors, but when it comes to the intensive rehab facilities and programs, they're nowhere near pro-level. Rehab can be a HUGE factor in return time.

So, pro timetables are like idealized versions of college timetables for the same severity of injury.
