That was a very enjoyable 30 minutes I just spent.

A few observations:

--Nice shot of Doug Collins on the Penn bench during MSU game.

--Gosh, Rendell and Boeheim have both deteriorated...was somewhat shocking to see and hear.

--Growing up in suburban Chicago, I find it amusing that nowhere in this video was the 4th team in the Final Four mentioned. For me, it was all about a great DePaul team barely losing to Larry Bird.

At the time, I was totally unaware of the other team besides MSU, and was completely oblivious of anything having to do with Penn basketball--other than DePaul getting upset a year or two later by SJU in the 2nd round, and then losing at the Palestra to that squad I believe in the following year.

That would only change 5 years when I entered Penn, and very quickly got hooked by streamers, The Line, and folding newspapers when the Princeton lineup was introduced.

IIRC, that was the last third place game ever played during the Final Four.

We are entering an era when an Ivy team in the final four is possible again. A dominant run like Penn of the 70's is not likely, but an upset run like Princeton in the 60's is.

This is the best thing I've seen on the 79 team. Thanks for posting. I came along in the Fall of 80 and so missed the whole thing. But I got to hear about it a ton back then by my new basketball buddies.

Actually, there were two more National third place games played. The last was in 1981, when Virginia defeated LSU, 78-74.

Some great memories for someone who was attending Temple at the time but a big Quakers fan.

Some thoughts related to what other posers have written and random thoughts,

Remember listening to the Iona game on the radio as I don't believe it was on local TV. That seems strange even for 40 years ago. It's crazy to think how close they came to losing that game and how history would have been changed.

The 79 team was not a "cinderalla." They were lurking just outside the top 20 most of the year (no Top 25 back then). They were under seeded. This was less than 10 years removed from the undefeated regular season team that was ranked #2 in the country.

The 78 team was great also. Attended the first round game where Keven McDonald scored all those points.

The final four loss to MSU was bad--they deserved a better fate. But I didn't feel anywhere near as bad as the Villanova regional final debacle from years earlier.

Also remember listening on the radio to the runner up game against Depaul which also probably means that was not on TV. Redemption even though they lost.
