Catching up on the new staff's recruiting efforts. Listed below are players with OFFERS (not just interest). I have 35 names on the list, but I am sure I have missed some. Last year at this time, there were 47 offers. The biggest difference, by far, is that 18 of last year's offers at this point were to PA players. This year's offers are scattered a lot more - with only two going to PA kids.

With one camp being held this weekend and two more in July, I expect a lot more names to be added to the list over the next month.

Not sure why Bucknell doesn’t do more to attract local players. Southern Columbia, for instance, has at least three Class of 2020 players receiving tons of interest and offers from many Ivy and Patriot League schools but not one is Bucknell. Considering these players are also attracting attention from some power conferences, it may be a moot point, but it’s not stopping teams like Colgate, Lafayette, HC and Lehigh.

Another big difference here besides the wider geographic reach is the size of these recruits. Noticeable across multiple positions. Hopefully there is a stud QB in this haystack. And WRs too.

A nice commitment today: Tyler Beverett, a 6-3 200 lb QB from Scottsdale AZ. His Saguaro team has won the last six 4A titles. Had offers from Indiana (the Big Ten version), New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Lehigh, Columbia, Georgetown, Abilene Christian.

As a junior, despite missing the middle of the season due to an injury, he was 107-162 for 2093 yards and 22 TDs. Also ran for 304 yards on 40 carries. Much of that is versus good opposition. This was his first year as a starter, playing for a strong team that reloads annually.

Cecchini's reputation as an offensive guru may have helped here. The various recommendations from NFLers Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andre Roberts, both of whom were mentored by Cecchini, can't hurt.

Stars aren’t particularly accurate at this level, but its still nice to see Beverett with 3 stars from ESPN, Scout and 247. Two stars from Rivals.

Saguaro QB Tyler Beverett Commits to Bucknell

Excerpts:

"Beverett, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, said he visited two Ivy League schools and three Patriot League schools and came away most impressed by Bucknell. Beverett had a Power 5 offer from Indiana."

"I spent the last couple of years visiting a lot of schools, attending camps, and meeting with college coaches," Beverett said. "At the end of the day, I ultimately wanted to find a situation that is a great fit for my QB skill set, top-tier academic institution, and the opportunity to compete for a starting job Day 1.

"As I learned more about the Patriot League, the more intriguing it became. ... Bucknell’s staff made the biggest impact on me, because they were able to convey a clear vision for the future of their program and what it is going to take to make that happen. I feel like I am a big part of that future. All things combined, it felt like the right fit for me."

Bison got a good recruit today: Ivan Yates, a 5-10 175 lb CB from Georgia. Yates had offers from Air Force, Princeton, Penn, Liberty, South Alabama, Lehigh, Lafayette, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, TN Tech, Mercer, and Columbia.

Over the years, BU has not landed many recruits who had three FCS offers plus offers from two of the top Ivy's. Lehigh and Lafayette also.

In addition to Beverett (see above post) and Yates, there have been three or four other commitments, although I couldn't find all of them. Two are:

- Blake Leake, 6-2 185 lb WR/FS from VA. Was 1st team all-state as a WR and DB in Class 4 (3rd largest of 6). Had VMI offer.

- Christian Tait, 6-3 180 lb WR from NY (Staten Island's Monsignor Farrell). Second team all-state.

Bison got a commitment today from Ethan Pitzel, a 6-4 250 lb OL from a suburb of Cleveland (Solon HS). Pitzel had offers from Fordham, Youngstown State, Lafayette, Sacred Heart, Robert Morris, and Valpo.

Also not reported at the start of July was a commitment from Nick Semptimphelter, a 6-2 180 lb QB from the Nashville (TN) area who completed 226 of 330 passes (68.5%) for 3,187 yards and 36 touchdowns. Ranked in Tennessee's top 100 players. Had an offer from Valpo. Not clear how much scholarship money he is receiving.

Semptimphelter's father was a star QB for Lehigh and PL MVP in 1993, throwing to All-American WR Dave Cecchini.

Commitment today from Michael Bright Jr., a 6-4 210 lb DE/TE. He is doing a post-grad year at Hotchkiss after missing half of his senior year for a Newark H.S. Was reportedly leading NJ in sacks prior to breaking his collarbone. Had offers from Lehigh and Morgan State.

He played a little basketball in HS but, unlike his Dad, football was his main sport.

Semptimphelter thus far in three wins has gone 44-59 (75%) for 845 yards, with 12 TD's vs 0 INT's.

Also Tyler Beverett, the three star commitment, has played well thus far - albeit against far tougher competition. He is 17-25 (68%) for 272 yards with 4 TD's in two games. One of those games was a close loss to a California team ranked #8 in the nation by Maxpreps. Beverett's Saguaro team is ranked #18 in the nation and #1 in Arizona.

Bison definitely can use an elite passing QB.

Another commitment:

Sam Barus, a 6-1 165 lb safety from a good Batavia IL program. Had offers from Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, Columbia, Dayton, Butler, and Valpo.

Another commitment:

Connor Halverson, a 6-4 275 lb OL from Westlake HS in Austin. Had offers from Air Force, Columbia, Houston Baptist, and some D2's.

Westlake is one of the top teams in Texa 6A, the largest group. They are 8-1, with their lone loss being by a 26-25 margin to another highly ranked 6A school. The previous year Westlake made it to the Texas 6A semi-finals before losing a close game. Halvorsen was a starter for that team as well. Anyone who has read Friday Night Lights will appreciate how tough it is to advance that far in Texas football. They had to win four games against tough teams to get that far.

What is the vision of our football future? What are we trying to be on offense and defense?

Looks like a very good recruiting class coming in with more size and hopefully more speed.

And also hope that our schedule is not as brutal as this year.

Opinions and inside info welcomed. Coach C has a good reputation of wide open offense with a lot of points. How many years away are we from being at least .500 again?

Not sure how many years away from .500, but I think next year should be significantly better. To begin, the players have had to learn an entirely different offense and an entirely different defense - which means there has been a big learning curve. Offense now uses fewer TE's, more WR's, and normally employs the read option. All very different from Susan's approach. Also the defense now has three LB's, who are employed differently than Susan's two LB approach, and has two safeties playing fairly traditional roles.

Another change is that for various reasons, some experienced players who were a fit in Susan's offense have been replaced by less experienced players who fit what Cecchini wants to do. That is most noticeable in the OL, where three very big players who started in 2018 have been replaced by smaller, younger players.

Further, recent starting lineups have had only one senior among the starting 22. That bodes well for next year, although it has made this year harder. Also, as you probably know, Bucknell is the only PL school that doesn't have a number of 5th year players in any given year. While others make it as easy to return for a 5th year as it is to cross the street, Bucknell makes it virtually impossible. Thus Bucknell has had one 5th year player in 15+ years while all the other PL members have had 40+ 5th year players. I hope Cecchini got the Bucknell Administration to loosen up their ultra-restrictive standards, but I doubt that happened.

As for future schedules, I don't think next year will be quite as hard but it still figures to be difficult. Three OOC games I know about are Cornell, Princeton, and Army (the season opener I believe). I have also heard rumors about another VMI series but I don't know if that starts in 2020. There is also a possibility that the Sacred Heart series has one more year left.

As for recruiting, I think it is going fairly well, especially considering it is a new staff and the team's record is underwhelming. Holy Cross right now has pulled away from the rest of the league in recruiting but the Bison are at least holding their own with everyone else. One huge need, however, is to find a talented RB, with Freshnock graduating and opening day starter Marquis Carter having left the team.

Finally, here is a list of the top PL recruits, based on offers. Bucknell has two of the top three, but only one other.

Haven't updated this list for a while. At least four new commitments in the past month: WR Luke Delgaudio, FB/LB Dan Meuser, DL Connor Carretta, and OL Jack Wall. The first two are both from Dallas (PA) HS, which went 15-1, losing only in the 4A final.

I've identified 13 commitments - which is two more than last year at this stage. Some are likely getting less than a full scholarship. Early signing date is December 18th. The full list:

• Sam Barus, a 6-1 165 lb safety from IL. Had offers from Southern Illinois, Western Illinois, Columbia, Dayton, Butler, and Valpo.
• Tyler Beverett, 6-3 200 lb QB from Scottsdale AZ. Had offers from Indiana (the Big Ten version), New Mexico, Northern Colorado, Lehigh, Columbia, Georgetown, Abilene Christian
• Michael Bright Jr., a 6-4 210 lb DE/TE. (NJ) – did PG year at Hotchkiss. Had offers from Lehigh and Morgan State.
• Connor Carretta 6-2 265 lb DL (OH) – committed to Brown in August, decommited in November. Also had Morehead State offer.
• Luke Delgaudio 6-3 190 lb WR/PR (PA) – played for 15-1 Dallas HS, which lost in 4A final. Caught 38 passes for 660 yards and 8 TD’s. Offer from Marist.
• Connor Halverson, a 6-4 275 lb OL from Westlake HS in Austin. Had offers from Air Force, Columbia, Houston Baptist, and some D2's.
• Blake Leake, 6-2 185 lb WR/FS from VA. Was 1st team all-state as a WR and DB in Class 4 (3rd largest of 6). Had VMI offer.
• Dan Meuser 6-0 200 lb FB/LB (PA) – also played for Dallas HS. Had 86 carries for 847 yards and 10 TD’s.
• Ethan Pitzel, a 6-4 250 lb OL Ohio (Solon HS). Offers from Fordham, Youngstown State, Lafayette, Sacred Heart, Robert Morris, and Valpo.
• Nick Semptimphelter, a 6-2 180 lb QB from Nashville (TN). Offer from Valpo.
• Christian Tait, 6-3 180 lb WR from NY (Staten Island's Monsignor Farrell). 2nd team All-NY as a junior
• Jack Wall 6-5 265 lb OL (IL). Offers from Drake, Butler, and Valpo.
• Ivan Yates, a 5-10 175 lb CB from Georgia. Yates had offers from Air Force, Princeton, Penn, Liberty, South Alabama, Lehigh, Lafayette, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, TN Tech, Mercer, and Columbia.

Could use another OL and DL, plus a LB and definitely a RB. Also a PK.

As noted earlier, the Bison received commitments from two QB's om the summer. Tyler Beverett, from Scottsdale AZ, is the more highly ranked - but both put up big numbers. Their final stats:

TYLER BEVERETT:

- Team lost 42-35 in the finals of the large-school championships. Ranked #2 in Arizona.
- In that game, he passed for 230 yards and 2 TD's and ran for 103 yards.
- For the year, he completed 62% of his passes for 2246 yards and 27 TD's vs 4 INT's. Averaged 20 yards per completion.
- Also ran for 892 yards and 8 TD's, averaging about 12 ypc.

NICK SEMPTIMPHELTER:

- Completed 68% of his passes for 2414 yards and 25 TD's vs 7 INT's. Averaged 16 per completion. Rarely ran the ball.
- Team went 8-5.
