I only have second-hand information. However, three different sources have said that Jelani Williams has again torn an ACL.

I have no information regarding time, place or medical details.

Wow... if that's the case that is absolutely terrible news and really feel bad for Jelani. Two ACL tears is a really heavy burden, commitment to recover and rehab, and you'd think if a third has happened that at some point a realization comes that basketball just isn't in the cards any more.

This is true from what I hear. He was working out with a brace and tore it. I heard he plans to go home and withdraw to work for the year and come back to play 2. All unconfirmed.

Man, what horrible luck. You wonder about a medical explanation for this--ACL's are supposed to be more resilient after an ACL replacement. Feel terrible for the kid (not that I was counting on him for Penn after 2).

Man, what terrible news. That has got to be a tremendous disappointment for Williams. All we can do is wish him a successful rehab and offer as much support as possible.

Yeah. While I've always harbored hope for him to be a star, at this point I hope he can see the court just for his own sense of accomplishment and recovery, and also for the implication that his mobility would be good for the next phase of his life.

It is in situations like this when it is important for kids to go to the highest academic program possible so that they are prepared for life after the ball stops bouncing.

well maybe. i'm not really sure what the odds of 3 ACL surgeries on one person over 3 years are but they're not large.

i get where you're going with that but I'm not sure I agree with your journey.

Its not a journey. given that he has torn his acl three times, he is fortunate that he will have a penn degree to help take him places. kids often want the highest ball program they can get. given that the injury has occurred, he's better off than if he'd gone to a number of higher ranked basketball programs.

well, sure. but you can't live your life expecting to get 3 ACL tears. Obviously I'm an Ivy proponent. I just don't think you could cite this case to a kid thinking about taking a high major offer and have it resonate.

They would rightly point out how unlikely it is they'll tear their acl 3 times in 3 years.

good luck, jelani. Get better soon.

It is official, as those of you who follow Jon Rothstein on Twitter saw earlier today.

Soon thereafter I talked with Steve Donahue about the news and wrote this story:
