Zach will be playing in the top Italian League, which is very strong competition. It is generally ranked as one of the top five leagues outside of the U.S.

With Zach moving up to a more difficult league, any idea of how much money he will earn? Will housing or any other benefits be involved?

No idea, but I would be surprised if he's not earning more. Housing is often included in foreign deals as well, but certainly not always. But even after nine years of economic growth, salaries in Europe are generally still lower than they were pre-2008.

That will be good competition for him. The top Spanish league is the best in Europe by a considerable margin - but their 2nd division is better than some of the top leagues in other European countries.

One bit of trivia: there are over 40 players in the NBA who previously played in Spain's top league.

Prediction: Kimbal will shoot a ton of 3-pointers in Europe.

Mount St. Mary's alum Junior Robinson led the 2nd division in scoring as a rookie last year, albeit for the last place team. You may recall him ... he is a 5'5" dynamo. I followed Junior's season and didn't get the impression the league was as good as you say it is. Valladolid finished 6th of 18 teams. Their American guard, who I assume Kimbal is replacing, was a 2013 graduate of Florida Atlantic. He averaged 11.3 ppg last year and only shot 41 FTs in 38 games. I think Kimbal will have a great year in this league. Wish him well.

Not sure if I said it was that good - just "better than some of the top leagues in other European countries". Remember that there are 47 countries that have one or more leagues associated with Eurobasket. I would guess that Spain's second division is better than about 33 of those countries' top leagues. In October of 2018, these were Europe's top ten leagues according to one European sites. (And other sites had the same ten teams, just in a slightly different order):

1. Spain
2. Russian (VTB)
3. Turkey
- - - - -
4. Italy
5. France
6. Greece
- - - - -
7. Germany
8. Adriatic (mostly teams from the former Yugoslavia)
9. Lithuania
10. Israel

Others in the mix: Poland, Belgium, Baltic.

One site a few years ago attempted to rank all of the leagues in the world, including NCAA leagues as well, by using an elaborate statistical model as to how players do as they move from one league to another. In that analysis, Spain's second division ("Gold") ranked ahead of most European top leagues, including Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Baltic, France B, Italy B, Germany B, Croatia, Slovenia, Czech, Netherlands, and dozens more. Also of interest is that the 2nd division in Spain was viewed as better than all but seven of the 32 NCAA conferences. It was ahead of the A-10, AAC, MWC, WCC, etc.

Looking at Eurobasket's rankings of the top teams in their 47 countries, 7 of the top 29 teams last year were from Spain - and 14 of the top 100.

Btw, Junior Robinson ended up in a great spot for scoring. Playing for a weak team with limited offensive weapons, he put up 283 threes in 34 games (almost 8.5 per game). Only made 30.7% but he still had the green light. He also got to the line for 172 FT attempts. Very hard guy to stay in front of.

Not sure if this has been pointed out before, but Zach's high school coach Terry Connelly, who's quoted in the article, played for that Richmond team from the early 90's who beat Syracuse as a 15 seed.
