I think this is a question that needs to be asked, because this year's schedule really is asking the Season Ticket Holders for a contribution. Last year, there were 14 home games, including 4 Division 1 non-Ivy or Big 5 opponents (Lafayette, Rice, Miami and Monmouth) and a throwaway Div 3 game (Stockton)). This year, there are NO Division 1 non-Ivy or Big 5 games and 11 "home" (I am including the "away" St Joe's game because it is included at the Palestra) games. Yet they are charging the same price.
Did anyone know that the intent was to give up the 3 home games for the Wooden Tournament? I thought that was exempt and they could schedule the same number of home games as if they did not play in that tournament. What is the excuse for charging the same amount for what really is a terrible home schedule?

I haven't paid attention to the price, as I was still stewing over the small number of games, and the fact that they wanted me to re-up without even knowing the DATES of the games. They have now posted the dates, but still no start times.
Is the cost really the same as last year?
So the price per ticket per game has been increased by 27%????

You asked a couple of different (though somewhat related questions). As I think I responded to Mike James recently, while the Wooden Legacy Tournament can be an exempt tournament (as viewed by the NCAA), the Ivy rules do not permit playing in more than TWO exempt tournaments in any FOUR year period.
I believe that Penn absolutely was aware of this but concluded that the better competition it would face in the Wooden tournament was better than they would be able to arrange outside of it and, therefore, agreed to count the Wooden Tournament as three games. I do not believe that they had to give up HOME games, just that they are still restricted by Ivy rules to 27 total games.
I agree with your (separate) point that requiring (effectively) a 27% increase in ticket prices is piling on, especially for those of us who intend to GO to the Wooden Tournament. That does not sit well with me and I intend to see if anything can be done about that. After all, I'm a retiree with plenty of time to beat my head against the wall.

Thanks Steve. The ticket office is just the messenger; but Dr. Calhoun deserves a stern talking to. Go for it.

What the hell is the matter with you? This isn't a market to me. It's my alma mater, the team I called the games for ---there is far more in it than just a market like a pro team. I will never give up my tickets.
If they are going to play the vast majority of games on the road, don't fleece your most loyal fans.

Look, i know you are correct, but it’s hard for longtime season ticket holders (for decades in some cases) to walk away from their prime seats. I think the athletic department is being a bit short sighted though. Most of us will grin and bear it this year, hoping it is an aberration. Another year like this where they make you feel like you are being taken for granted, and some of us will likely switch to single game tickets.

At least one student is not too pleased with the schedule.
https://www.thedp.com/article/2019/08/guest -column...
- While some students saw poor student attendance at basketball games as a sign that they also shouldn't attend because “Penn isn't a sports school,†I instead made it my personal mission to bring as many of my friends as possible to the basketball games.
Unfortunately, I won't have many opportunities to fulfill my mission this season. The Quakers only have seven home games while students will be on campus. If Penn Athletics has a goal to increase student attendance at basketball games, this season’s schedule is a major swing and miss. Every game on the home schedule against Division I competition is a team that Penn plays every season either in Ivy or Big 5 play. The lack of home games against regional competition, like Lafayette in 2016 and 2018, or against a Power Five school, like Miami (Fla.) in 2018, is unfair to both players and fans alike. While Ivy League scheduling and the academic calendar are largely out of the hands of the athletic department, having just one home game before winter break is inexcusable. -

I've been buying season tickets since 1964. When & how did I forfeit my right to criticize a shortsighted administration?

My point about markets is the athletic department will not change unless there are consequences. Complaints are weak consequences.

I say there have been consequences. Anyone check the attendance data lately? How about the all-time high level of student apathy?
I get the fact that getting quality programs to visit the Palestra is hard. I also get the irony that it gets harder, the better our teams become. I also get the PU’s calendar is an issue, but Penn has managed these issues in the past. Why not now?
The administration just needs to care a bit more about the program and the fans as something more than a source of donations.

If I may support my fellow Brown Alum here, it seems to me that the scheduling is mostly done by the coaching staff. If you think it's hard to get teams to visit the Palestra, you should try to do it around the rest of the league.

The scheduling probably is primarily the coaching staff, which saw the Wooden Tournament as an opportunity to play some premier teams in a great setting. But the AD is the one who decided to charge the season ticket holders the same for 11 games that they charged for 14 the year before, with virtually no games in November or December.

Coaches do set the schedule, usually one of the assistants does the legwork. They also probably scheduled the Wooden because AJ's father and brother live there.

I don’t anyone is contesting that the Wooden tournament will be good competition and good experience for our players. Remember that it is an IVY, not an NCAA, rule that is forcing Penn to count these towards our annual quota of 27 games. If a couple of AJ‘s family members live near there, even more so-we’ve always tried to play one or more games in the year the hometown of our seniors. The complaints as I see it are that our home schedule is Terrible and people are essentially being ripped off for home game tickets by having them pay the same amount as last year for 27% fewer games.
