A few quick Q's as we kick off the football season on Saturday at Temple:
1) Any predictions on the final score? Temple is big, talented, and fast.....
2) What is the line on the game?
3) Financially, what do we expect to make on a game at Lincoln Financial Field? I realize Temple does not draw fans that well but is this game a money-maker for us?
Game is on ESPN3 at 3 pm.

1. The bison are down a few starters, and they are totally changing both their offensive and defensive systems. None of that bodes well for the outcome.
2. One line that I saw was temple -40.5 points. In a game like this, it really is impossible to determine a line that makes sense.
3. I think the pay for the bison will be in the neighborhood of $200,000, maybe more, although I have not seen anything in print.

Even with the Temple -40.5, I would still go with Temple. This game has all the markings of being one of the most lopsided Bison losses ever. Missing starters, a potent opponent, new coach, last year’s record - as much of a loyal Bison as I am, I just see a demoralizing defeat coming. I pray to God I am wrong, but I doubt it. I also keep remembering our last meeting with the Owls - 82-28 Temple in ‘66. Surprise us, Bison - make us proud. But no matter what happens hold your heads high.

We are down a few starters before the season even begins?
Who is out and for how long?

Actually there were four meetings more recently than that game. In 1967, the Bison led for most of the game before losing on a late touchdown. Then in 1968 Bucknell beat Temple. In 1969 the Bison tied them, and in the final meeting temple pulled out a very close win. That game was in 1970.
The Bison still hold a large lead in the all-time series.

I don’t have any inside information. But just comparing this week’s game notes to the media guide depth chart that came out a few weeks ago, it is easy to make some inferences. There are four major changes on offense over the last few weeks:
- Chad Freshnock was 1st team RB a few weeks ago. Now not on depth chart.
- Justin Bethea was starting WR. Now not one of the six WRs on depth chart.
- Marcus Ademilola was starting TE. Now missing from depth chart.
- Jacob Russ was starting center. It has been confirmed he is out with an injury for the first few weeks.
Note that the first three listed above are all seniors, and have all started games in the past. Russ is a highly regarded sophomore from Texas. By the way, the prospective starting lineup for Saturday has only three seniors among the 22 starters.

You are right, 137, I stand corrected. The Bison did play Temple after the '66 fiasco. I now remember the 7-7 tie in '69, when a group of Temple supporters at the game began a chant of "82 to 28" - really irritating, but we held on for the tie that year.
I heard the same about only 3-4 seniors starting this weekend - another cause for concern.

My prediction is 62-10. Anything less than 40 points would be a moral victory. I'm not going. The Jersey Shore is calling my name. A 3-day weekend is not something to pass on.

Hopefully, the revenue generated from this game is budget enhancing and not budget relief. And, hopefully, it is > $200,000 though I'm not sure how Temple can afford much more.

It’s hard to figure out the exact economics, but I am fairly sure the temple could afford $200,000. Some guesswork as to their revenue from this game:
- Attendance of 28,000 fans times $25 average ticket price equals $700,000
- Parking: 10,000 cars times $20 average fee equals $200,000
- food: 28,000 fans times $15 spent on food times 80% profit margin equals $336,000 net
- merchandise: 10,000 sales times $25 average times 50% profit margin equals $125,000 net
TOTAL PROFIT (before rental cost of stadium and any employee costs not included in stadium rental) = $1,361,000
There is also some revenue produced from the pro rata share of any TV and radio broadcasts. Also some advertising fees. Probably some other costs as well, such as insurance.

No question. Most schools lose millions a year on football. To begin, funding 85 scholarships costs over $5 million. Throw in another 2 1/2 million dollars at least for a school like temple for their coaches. Then the cost of travel, the cost of equipment, and all the other expenses. But the marginal revenue of playing any given game is extremely positive.

Why the hell was Temple passing leading 56-12 under 2 minutes in the game? Not to mention their timeout stunt at the end of the first half.

Temple is paying a multi-million dollar rent per year plus game-day operating expenses to the Eagles. They get none of the revenue from parking or suites; and they receive 10% of concession revenue. The mayor of Philadelphia has weighed in on how bad Temple's deal is relative to others such as Pitt, San Diego State and Georgia State.
