It's funny how some of us (read "I") react to recruiting news. Andre's been on 137's list for quite awhile but I tend to focus on who's actually visting. I get excited when a recruit makes an OV and am disappointed when he commits somewhere else. After all, we all love Bucknell; shouldn't everybody? But there's so much happening behind the scenes of which we have no clue. To keep my sanity I have to train myself to trust the staff. They aren't always successful (nobody is) but they're really on top of it. Kudos to them and welcome, Andre!

You make a great point. I'm sure he made a visit, probably in the last six weeks, but it was completely off the radar. Hopefully there are a few more good prospects also off the radar.

Two twitter comments from analysts:

- "Bucknell gets an excellent post prospect in 6-11 Andre Screen (Alexandria, VA/ St.Stephen’s&St.Agnes) Screen showed solid improvement from the beginning of the spring until the end of the summer. Ceiling has not been reached."

- " this is an outstanding get for them. Screen has improved on a steady pace & best days are still ahead. Will keep Bucknell at top of Patriot for years to come."

One more twitter comment on Screen:

- "Most intriguing big man I saw at TheHoopGroup Southern Jam Fest was 2020 6-10 C Andre Screen, Alexandria, VA - St.Stephen’s & St.Agnes. Really like it when I see it looks like a young man is putting in time and effort to improve"

Wow! Great News! Congrats to ND and his staff. When I read 137's recruit reviews there are guys that I think "I'd love to see this guy at BU, but realistically, no chance." Screen was one of those guys. Good for us!

I’m delighted to have this guy coming and am glad he will have some continuity with Newman.

BTW no one on this thread talks much about Newman and his growth from freshman to sophomore. Why can’t he have a blow up year? He has the attributes........

Yes, he could have a much bigger year and a much bigger role. I think he is somewhat limited, however, by his complete lack of a jump shot. True, Nana also didn't have one - but he had an unstoppable hook shot with either hand. Newman doesn't have that sort of weapon. One plus is that he is very good on the pick and roll, often with Sotos.

One thing that will affect his minutes is how often ND chooses to go small by using Moore or Rhodes at center. With the glut of PF's (Moore, Meeks, Spear, Rhodes, and van der Heijden), it makes sense to try to get at least two on the court as often as possible - especially if Spear has improved, as some are saying. Of that group, I think only Moore could handle the SF role defensively, but that might be another way to generate some minutes for the other guys.

As I recall Spear got very little playing time last year, but had some shining moments when he did get the chance.

When people evaluate teams, they seem to take into account the seniors who were lost, take no account of the incoming class, and assume the returning players will perform the same. What will be fun this year is to see the improvement in the returnees, and what kind of help we get from the frosh.

Agree. One very important thing will be the change in mindset of the returning players. For the last couple years, their role has been to support the main scorers (Nana, Zach, Stephen, Nate, and Kimbal, i.e. to just fit in and take the shots that are there. Now all these All-PL guys are gone and the starters are going to have to go back to their HS/AAU mindset of looking to create and to score. Toomer, Moore, Sotos, Funk, Meeks, etc are all capable of putting up a lot more points, and the Bison will need them to be more aggressive on offense if they are to be a very good team.

Back in HS, Bison scored at these rates:

Toomer 23.5 ppg (vs strong competition)
Ellis 19 ppg as a junior before transfer
Funk 18.5 (vs strong competition)
Meeks 18 ppg (in limited minutes but mostly weak competition)
Moore 17 ppg (vs strong competition
Sotos 16.5 ppg (vs fairly strong competition)

I went fishing in Canada over the weekend in an area with no cell phone reception. Then, once I returned to civilization, I was excited to see all of the activity on this board.

I watched one of the Screen videos. He looks like a Nana Foulland 2.0. If he can shoot FT's and a J, we could be in store for a nice run in the PL again.

Welcome to Bucknell, Andre!
New season, new team, new dream . . .

Screen's school, St. Stephen's and St. Agnes, is ranked #3 in the DC Metro Area in the Washington Post's weekly ranking:

They face some very tough competition this weekend in the Gonzaga tournament.

In the first round last night, St. Stephen's and St. Agnes (SSSA) defeated defending PA 4A champ Imhotep Charter 73-56. Screen had 12 points, going up against 6-9 Notre Dame commit Elijah Taylor, who had offers from schools such as Tennessee, Florida, Seton Hall, UConn, PSU, Georgia, Pitt, etc. Taylor ended up with 11 points.

SSSA has another tough opponent in today's semi-final as they take on undefeated Gray Collegiate from South Carolina.

Screen's SSSA team beat Gray Collegiate in the semis today 88-65. They will play host Gonzaga in the finals tomorrow. Screen led both teams with 17 points.

SSSA lost to host Gonzaga 69-63 in tournament final. Had a lead with three minutes left but lost after Screen and another key player fouled out. Gonzaga's big man, Terrance Williams, has offers from schools such as Michigan, Stanford, UCLA, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Miami, Providence, and other P6 conferences.

Serious question: If Screen and Turner were on the Bison roster right now, would both be starters?

It’s impossible to really answer - and D1 basketball is light years above HS or even AAU, particularly in terms of learning to play defense. However as a complete guess, I would expect Turner to be one of the first two subs, along with Meeks. And I think Screen might be the main back-up to a healthy Paul Newman. A big issue for screen is that it takes almost everyone a lot of practice and coaching to learn how to play post defense at this level. Even the top Bison centers ever struggled initially at the defensive end.

Perhaps a more important question is how they will fit into next years team. My expectation is that Turner will replace Toomer as the starting shooting guard and that Screen initially will be a back-up to Newman. However, by the start of the Patriot League season, I would hope that Screen’s minutes go up as he gets some more experience defending D1 post players.

Btw the fact that Foulland started as a frosh is not very relevant since that team didn’t really have another center. Oberfeld was hurt and couldn’t play until mid-January, which left 6-7 PF DJ MacLeay as the only other center. Going back further in time, remember that Muscala did not start a game until after Christmas of his freshman year.

My original thought was if they began the year at Bucknell, like any other freshman player, by this point in the season they could be battling for starting nods. The Bison could use size, athleticism and shot-making ability. These players seem to have those attributes. Obviously nobody knows in any of these “what if” scenarios. Just conversation.

I think Screen needs work in the weight room and also improvement in his footwork and lateral quickness on defense before you'd want him to be your starting center. That's normal for most 18-year old big men.

Ahead of tonight’s American game, I got to see Screen last night at Georgetown Prep. I was impressed by his shooting touch and scoring versatility, as he hit a face-up jumper, a nice hook from a few feet away, and of course a few dunks, too. He also looked confident at the free throw line, where he hit 2 of 3.

He had multiple blocks, altered shots and deflections. He was vocal on defense. He also demonstrated a high basketball IQ with a very nice assist.

Unfortunately, his time was limited first by picking up a couple early fouls, and then by the game turning into a rout. He was done by the middle of the third quarter.
