Towns makes the Julius Erving watch list (Top 20 small forward nationally). Aiken makes the Bob Cousy watch list (Top 20 point guard nationally).

Both great players, but Aiken's 34.9 usage last year and Towns' 31.9 usage in '18 really aren't compatible. Someone will have fewer touches and we'll have to see how they play together. Harvard clearly has the best overall talent---but then again, they have had that and not won for 4 years. So, gotta do it on the court.

you just used usage rate unprompted. I'm scared and impressed.

I dont’ think usage is going to be a problem. Plenty of examples of high usage players playing together successfully. Harvard has some high class problems this year and I don’t think figuring out how to use both Towns and Aiken at the same time is the kind of problem Amaker is worried about.

Given how bad this Harvard team is with turnovers and that Seth and Bryce have put together seasons with 30+% usage and under 20% TO rates... maybe they should use *all* of the possessions...

Seriously though, haven’t read much on the impact of the longer 3 point distance. I can anticipate a series of impacts - some seemingly contradicting each other.

Assume some players will no longer be long range options. For instance, Bassey, Juzang and Brodeur come to mind. Guys like Towns, Aiken and Haskett seem to have the range. I’m sure others do as well. However, as rates drop from close to 40% to closer to 30%, will Ivy offensive schemes adjust as well?

Intent of rule was to open the game up, but isn’t there a possibility that defenders drop off of shooters who can’t make the adjustment?

My initial sense is that this change will help teams that are larger and more athletic, possibly to the detriment of Ivy OOC prospects for some matchups.

Last time they moved the line back a foot it had a trivial impact. % make rates went down by a percentage point and take rates went down by a percentage point and a a half. To be fair, that shift down was pretty sticky... it took about a decade to claw that percentage point back and get over 35%.

My guess is that you'll hear a lot about it when a team has a bad night, but it will rarely be presented in the context of the overarching averages not changing much.

Appears that Harvard has been preparing for the extended line for years.

Here's Tommy McCarthy (now with Rice) a few years ago:

Thanks.

I think the immediate impact may be that certain players may take less 3’s. Some guys are basically already taking set shots from the outer limit of their range. This redistribution could likely result in what you previously observed: a slight drop in shooting % and shots attempted.

Largest impact could be that bigs like Brodeur, Yale’s Bruner, and Princeton’s Gladson might just be left alone until they prove they can make the shot.

Crimson Madness held tonight but not televised for first time in years. Anyone who was there able to provide insight?

Looks like Aiken and Towns dressed but did not participate in the scrimmage. Baker repeated as slam dunk champ over freshman Ledlum.

Seth Towns wins 3 point shooting contest showing good elevation on highlights.

Next up, MIT on Nov 5th. I'll be at Northeastern on Nov. 8th and Lavietes for Maine on Nov. 10th.

Based on the posted lineups for the two teams, looks like the 5 starters sat out the scrimmage.

I didn’t see the posted teams anywhere. What is the starting lineup that didn’t play? Lewis, Towns, Bassey, Kirkwood, Aiken?

Surprised how few "Starters" started. Did you notice or hear any reasons for this?

Hopefully, this is a promising augury for his coming season with the new 3-pt. line.

Seth, Bryce, Rio and Robert always shout from well behind the line.

Guys like Christian, Justin, Danilo and Noah not so much.

Two twitter posts by Seth on what must have been very late Friday (afterCrimson Madness)

First:

It’s been a tough 19 months, and although this long, winding road to recovery has yet to reveal its luminous end, my time will beckon right on cue. I’ll be ready when it does, and I’m coming for blood. #LL3Z

Then, Seth posts video highlight of him winning 3 point contest at Crimson Madness and simply submits that:

Bank is open

Sounds like Seth is a work in progress, with progress.

Best wishes to you Seth.

That tweet sounds like a winning entry for the Bulwer Lytton Fiction Contest
