Was talking to a couple alums last week about how scholarships have greatly expanded the Bison recruiting net and thought I'd put together a list of where recruits have come from since the inception of scholarships. I identified 26 states/provinces where Bison played HS ball. (Included Germany but not the Bahamas.) The list includes all scholarship players plus any walk-ons who played multiple games. My count starts with the McNaughton class and ends with this year's current freshmen.
I've filled in the most common state, which not surprisingly is PA, but left the others blank to see if someone can identify the players who played in each state/province. Interestingly Texas and North Carolina, along with Maryland, are the most common. Note that some players played their HS ball in more than one state.
1 . Alabama (1) -
2 . Arizona (1) -
3 . California (3) -
4 . Connecticut (3) -
5 . Georgia (2) -
6 . Germany (1) -
7 . Illinois (4) -
8 . Indiana (1) -
9 . Maine (1) -
10 . Maryland (5) -
11 . Massachusetts (1) -
12 . Michigan (2) -
13 . Minnesota (2) -
14 . New Hampshire (1) -
15 . New Jersey (4) -
16 . New Mexico (1) -
17 . New York (1)
18 . North Carolina (5) -
19 . Nova Scotia (1) -
20 . Oklahoma (1) -
21 . Ontario (2) -
22 . Pennsylvania (13) - Sestina , Funk , Newman , Foulland , Show , Ayers , R Hill , Klebon , Cohen , Vegotsky , R Ebner , T O'Brien , J Griffin
23 . Rhode Island (1)
24 . Tennessee (1)
25 . Texas (5) -
26 . Virginia (4) -
Note: My count could easily have missed something.

Not bad - but two errors. Also current walk-on Jordan Sechan doesn't count, since I set the criteria as scholarship players plus walk-ons who started multiple games.

missed the walk ons must have started two games, but that reminded me:
-add Badmus to Illinois
- remembered last name John Clark from Oklahoma
- add Tyree to Texas
- transfer from Penn is probably Connecticut
- add Willman to NJ
as for errors:
not too good on prep school locations so could be an error with Frazier and/or Newman

Yes, but only Willman counts for this exercise because Mack predated scholarships. He came in with Lee and Bettencourt (and Vaier-McClymont) in the last non-scholarship class.

Note on the above. I didn't include Morrison since he didn't fit the criteria of having been on scholarship or being a walk-on who started multiple games.

some egregious oversights on my part for recent guys like Sotos, Jones and and S. Brown.
going off of B54's list, i presume my errors to be:
- Azzinaro in AZ, and
- Andoh in Ontario
i think Andoh is Arizona as well as Cali
so am i correct that we are still missing:
Massachusetts-1
Connecticut-1
North Carolina-1

Still missing Massachusetts and Connecticut. As for NC, I just realized I had incorrectly placed Nate Jones into the NC list instead of VA, where he belongs. So there are actually five VA players and all have been accounted for. Only four NC players.
You are correct that Andoh played the early part of his HS ball in AZ. He was born in Canada, which may have caused the confusion. As for the confusion on Azzinaro, when he committed to Bucknell it was reported that his family was moving to Arizona and that he would play there senior year. In fact, I believe he played some AAU ball in Arizona during that summer. But he ended up returning to the same San Antonio HS, as BRW can attest to. I always assumed that the move was postponed or never happened, or else that he stayed in San Antonio and lived with friends to complete his senior year.
One correction on B54's list. Rob Thomas didn't play HS ball in Texas, only NJ. His family moved to Texas after he finished in HS, so he was always listed as being from Texas on the Bison roster.

thanks for this enjoyable mental execise even though it kept me awake last night. not sure i'll ever come up with the last two without cheating, but will continue trying for one more day. of course, presumably plenty of other people here with better memories who might get them first.

Don't think he could have been given a scholarship since the Bison have been at the max of 13 scholarships for all the seasons he has been a Bison.

Still missing two from the original list: one who played for a HS in Connecticut and one who played for a HS in Massachusetts. (Not Bettencourt since he was one year prior to scholarships). Here is a hint on each:
- One of the missing players did not go directly to Bucknell when he left this HS.
- The other one was coached by the father of a future teammate when he was at the HS in question.

Yes he was. But if you look above at the last filled-out list by B54, we already have him (and Ryan Frazier) as being from Connecticut. So we still need a 3rd one who played for a CT HS. Plus one who played for a MA HS.

Yes, but he is in the non-scholarship bucket. He actually played his last few years of HS ball in Massachusetts but did play the earlier years at a private school in CT.

okay, last hints pointed me to the last two, but i still had to semi-cheat to get, so not going to list them.
first was resolved by looking up where various prep schools are located and realizing that NMH is in Massachusetts.
was pretty confident i knew who the 'future teammate' and his father, the coach were. that pointed to timeframe and school. i determined player by process of elimination, but still felt compelled to confirm accuracy by looking up his bio.
