Stopped in for a half this AM. The Bears have a 14 man roster with Braelee Albert not on the team. George MK and touted Frosh Dan Friday were in street cloths. Friday has a hamstring issue at start of pre-season. Hope it is not a lingering problem. But they often are. Two teams of 6 were the White team with Choh, Howard, Anderson, Gainey, Cohen, & Shaper. The Brown was Hunsaker, DeWolf, Mitchell, Franks, Kogelnik & Watts. Score was 19-2 White after about 10 minutes. Anderson was leading his group up the floor quickly. Choh looked strong, taking the ball to the the hoop quite often. Gainey must be 6-10 as he is clearly taller than DeWolf who is listed as 6-9. Gainey looks stronger this year and showed a good stroke from the FT line. He is a quick leaper who will supply some shot blocking. But none of the bigs have much of an offensive post presence, either facing the hoop and back to the basket. Gainey at least tries to post up and may yet develop some moves to become an offensive threat. Cowen showed a nice stroke and is stronger than I assumed he’d be. Howard should have a productive senior year. He runs the floor well, rebounds, and shoots from mid-range or three.

Hunsaker got the Brown team closer by hitting 3 or 4 threes. Davis rebounded pretty well, and often took the ball up court himself. Looks comfortable doing that at 6-8. He made a couple of real nice passes, one a look away pass to a cutter for a layup. Chow missed a shot from three that Howard went up to grab and drop in. But Watts came from a few feet away and swatted the ball away at the rim. Great reaction and leaping ability.

Martin has the group playing hard on defense. Good shots were hard to come by. It will be a tough break if Friday struggles this year with that hamstring issue. He is a first team all State player from Detroit. Strong kid at 6-4 230. I believe he has a chance to start or be the first man off the bench. Game was sloppy at times. Perhaps due to the tough D as much as still early. But we have a scrimmage at Vermont next Saturday, when TJ Sorrentine will be inducted into their Hall of Fame. That will be a strong test. Then we open up at Bryant on Tuesday 11/5. There seems to be enough veteran and young talent here for Martin and his staff to mold into a decent mid-major that can challenge for the Ivy Tourney. Defense was the key last year and will be again. The schedule is well constructed with many winnable but challenging games early. Then a stretch with URI, St. John’s, & Duke before we start Ivy play. Go Bears!!!

Thanks for the write up. Nice to hear they’re playing fast, and that someone was hitting the outside shot. Despite this being a guard-heavy lineup there isn’t a lot of outside shooting. They do need GMK out there. Huge challenge for Brown learning to play the offense after losing two of their highest usage players. There will be growing pains. You hope Friday doesn’t have to start the season in street clothes. Hard enough coming in as a frosh making the adjustment without having to miss preseason. (See Llewelyn, J).

Thanks for the observations. I too was at the scrimmage and feel optimistic. Defense will be the key again and think that we'll be fine on the offensive end. I see the starting lineup being Choh, DeWolf, Anderson, Hunsacker, and Howard -- with 5+ ample replacements coming off the bench. One difference maker could be Gainey, providing the rim protection we've not had in a while.
