I loved it when Oats didn't give our team any credit in the halftime interview. He blamed everything on their own missed shots. That gave me confidence that he wouldn't make the adjustments he needed to win the game.
Great win, Quakers!
I thought the exact same thing, and it ticked me off a bit. We were shooting sub 25% from 3 and had countless layups just fall off the rim, and he says that? It's one thing to have confidence in your team, but that was disrespectful.
As for MLL, he did not play and don't get your hopes way up for too much this year. However, it's not like Jarrod necessarily showed the leap in game one, and there will be minutes out there...Hopefully he is a quick study and starts to develop more. The fact that he didn't even start in the first 10 in the scrimmage was a bit of a warning sign to me. But man did those warmup dunks look incredible.

I'm trying to find a replay. It doesn't seem to be on ESPN Plus. My link locked up for most of the 2nd half and I had to listen to audio only. Thanks for any help.

It’s on ESPN +. You need to look under conferences, choose Ivy and then on demand.

Awesome start---and it seems that we have that combination of veteran and young talent that we haven't seen since the late Dunphy era. Too bad we have so few home games, but looking forward to LaSalle and then going up to Providence. And, because I know we all love reading the stories as reported on the other side:

Always fun reading the gloom and doom comments.

Our 3 seniors played a lot of minutes. While the freshman guards were eye opening we will need more minutes off the bench. Wang would help but who knows how his knee will hold up.

Just read through the thread. Know what was noticeably absent? Comments like "I can't believe we lost to an Ivy." Or "this is humiliating." The perception of our conference has definitely changed. I'll also say that the Bama fans were significantly more articulate, thoughtful and gracious than what I generally see on the various Big 5 boards.

This may have been asked before. I had a previous engagement that could not be avoided. Is there a way to see a replay?

Yes-- follow the ESPN link at the beginning of this thread. You'll be able to watch the replay there.

I've totally struck out on finding a replay. I don't have a cable package. So that's probably it. Maybe Otto will post it.

Our 3 seniors played a lot of minutes. While the freshman guards were eye opening we will need more minutes off the bench. Wang would help but who knows how his knee will hold up.
Some random morning after thoughts:
SD’s personnel moves fascinated me all night, as they always do in November. I’m not sure Wang would have started even if he were available. Starting Dingle over Washington seemed odd at first, but we now know why. I think we have found a PG. Clearly, Steve was looking for matchups at both ends which explains Monroe’s minutes early. I did expect to see Scott out there and was not disappointed. He was erratic as usual, but overall a good night for him. I love the idea of Ivy backcourts having to deal with Dingle and Goodman. When was the last time a Penn coach gave the ball to a freshman guard not named Rosen in crunch time?
This roster, even with the injuries, is as deep and versatile as any I can remember. Expect some different looks as the matchups dictate. I think we will see Martz on the court before long when the 3’s are not falling. Jarrod needs to give AJ some more rest, and if not him, maybe MLL. This will be even more important when the Ivy weekends begin. AJ’s legs were failing him at the end on layups and FTs. He makes those last ones and there is no drama at the end.
All this with subpar games from both Dev and Bryce. Betley looked good, he is noticeably stronger too. He really frightened me with that spill he took early after being undercut on a drive.
I was joking with a friend who was watching during the game that Penn looked more like an SEC team driving the lane almost at will and getting the points underneath and Bama looked more like an Ivy team relying on 3’s to stay in the game.
There was a lot of 1st game sloppiness from both teams. Expect that to improve in time for the Wooden.

Sloppiness wasn’t just in turnovers on our side, either. Shot selection and defensive rebounding need to improve.
On the former, mediocre (2-pt. attempts) to bad (3s) shooting %s generated a pedestrian 0.96 points-per-possession.
On the latter, getting killed on the glass gave ‘Bama 8 more FGA than we generated—in a game where we managed to jack up 68 shots!

Look on the bright side---how easy is it to win a game at an SEC school when you give up 80 points?

The game has changed so much. It's so fast and it's difficult for anybody not to get beat off the dribble. Players are stronger, more athletic and more skilled.
Have you watched the NBA recently? 6'10' and up players bringing the ball up, crossing over, going to the hoop and finishing. And some of the guards are complete blurs out there - Trae Young, D'Arron Fox etc.
It's not necessarily more entertaining from my standpoint, but, for sure, it's a totally different game today.

No question that it is different at the NBA level, although that Sixers-Suns game the other night shows that a guy like Simmons really cannot defend a true point guard with quickness.
But it's good to see at our level that we appear to have recruited some of that athleticism that allows us to compete at an SEC level

Wimp also mentioned last night that both teams had excellent spacing.
When you combine that with guys that can motor, it's fun to watch. At times, there was tremendous passing to go along with that as well (when we weren't turning the ball over).
As noted earlier, we didn't have multiple bigs clogging the lane which also helped in this regard. The flip side of this was mainly on the other end of the floor where we just could not rebound missed shots by Alabama on a consistent basis.

I think a big part of it is that our team just looked good out there. They were athletic, even if less athletic than Alabama. They were disciplined, organized, and never overwhelmed. They never stopped competing. I think we would have gotten those derisive comments if we looked the part. This Quaker team is very solid.
