Opens Indiana -18

O/U 143 1/2

For what it's worth this is a rubber match. Tigers 2-2 all-time against the Hoosiers.

Back-to-Back brutal games starting tonight. At this juncture, the goal should simply be to find an offensive and defensive strategy that works for these group of players. Additionally, find out who should be the players on the court. At this point and time, it appears to be a very unsettled situation.

The good news, sadly, is that there are few expectations for these next two games and maybe, it gets the players to simply focus on playing sound fundamental basketball. The challenge will be if the Tigers start getting blown out early, can they keep their composure.

Could be a LONG season but at least, there is the IL.

Based on the photos posted from today's shootaround, it looks like Elijah Barnes made the trip and participated in shoot around today. Barnes has struggled with injuries his whole career but his size and athleticism could make him an intriguing bench option for a team that's struggled on defense this season

The teams Indiana has beaten so this season are more than suspect.

I give the Tigers a punchers chance of covering the spot.

Good minutes for Langborg, who's got 5 early. Wright having a rough half with turnovers and a bad foul on a 3 point shooter. 14-11 IU going into the under-12 media

Nice push from the Tigers to tie it up at 21 at the under-8. Langborg continues to be really good offensively with a nice stepback 3, and Llewellyn gets on the board from deep as well

Tigers with a brief run to take a lead, but IU hits a wild contested 3 and gets it to 29-25 at the under-4 media

Best I have seen them play. Love the quick double team on defense.

Going into the locker room down 35-31. Llewellyn has been excellent with 13 points on 50% shooting and perhaps most encouraging 2/2 from the line. Langborg with 8 off the bench. Aririguzoh sat much of the half with 2 fouls, forcing Desrosiers and Barnes to play a lot of minutes against IU's bigs

Tiger offense is moving and passing the ball rather than Jaelin just dribbling. Jaelin had a very good first half but if he only could shoot the 3 pointer or hit some 2 pt jump shots. His shooting stroke is better than last year but still not great.

Arirguzoh can play defense but he has a tough time scoring against this level of competition.

1st half was encoraging.

Bella, Carlie and Meyers are playing. 16-14 at the end of the first quarter -- Bella has scored 10 of the 16 on 4 out of 6 with 2 3 pointers and 2 blocks.

Going to be a very physical and tough battle but at least they hung in there against a tough and vocal Iowa home crowd.

IU comes out pretty strong to start the half, taking a double digit lead at 48-37 with 13 to play. Tigers offense not finding much right now

Starting to slip away now as Tiger turnovers and transition buckets for IU give them a 23 point lead with 4 to play

79-54 final. Started to slip away from the Tigers with some rough turnovers down the stretch, but still an encouraging game. The first half was quite good. Evbuomwan was impressive in his first major minutes, scoring 10 points on 4/7 and some really nice drives. Langborg was quite effective at finding his own shot as well. Still a long way to go for this team but the signs are there for improvement I think. Unfortunate the schedule is so tough that the win-loss record might not reflect it for a while

I could see why MH sees potential in this group, despite the record. Until their flurry of turnovers and bad shots led to easy baskets for Indiana, the D was very solid, and they did a good job of mixing different man-to-man tactics with zone and what looked like a matchup zone without getting too confused or giving up too many offensive rebounds. Except for the Big Two, no one else playing had huge playing experience last season individually or together.

Offensively, after Llewelyn’s first two awful bricks, he played a good 3/4 of a game. (I can’t give him the whole game because when you’re a talented scoring point guard, you have to figure out how to stop opposing runs by settling your team and getting good shots.) Brunt for Indiana was the best player on the floor and just stymied Aririguzoh in the low post. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Richmond has improved much from the high post, so the most that happens there is a dribble handoff or ball screen, neither of which happened to look very sharp.

On the plus side, Evbuowan looked like a player combining athleticism and poise, Friberg and Langborg did more than shoot threes, and there was a Barnes sighting. I was even encouraged by the couple of backdoor attempts where the help defender spoiled the finish, because they accomplished the hard parts of setting up the move, seeing it, and pulling the trigger; in one case the pass was slightly off-target and in the other the receiver missed a chance to pass to a wide-open teammate. If they keep working on it I think we could see a return to defenders constantly having to look over their shoulders when they try to play team defense.

Obviously, a healthy Schwieger would be a big help, not just for scoring but for providing a safe place to send the ball when they’re getting hurried up in the half-court. Desrosier didn’t see much action and Johns looked like he was trying too hard and making mental mistakes, but I think they’ll both get back to being solid contributors. Tomorrow’s game with ASU should be a good opportunity to just let it rip for forty minutes at home.

...which is a problem creating space for Jae-Llew to drive the lane when there is a big man and his defender blocking access to the rim.

They ought to work on interior passing in that situation. Drives defenders crazy, although it takes good poise, mutual understanding, and sure hands.
