Yale picks up the NIT Preseason Tip-Off Title (Orlando Division) with a 81-61 win over Bucknell.
KenPom had Yale favored by 4. The ESPN broadcasters said that Bucknell was favored by a point.
Yale shot 59 percent (73% from 2, 25% from 3) and 88% FT (15-17)
Bucknell shot 36% (32% from 2, 38% from 3) and 60% FT (6-10)
Rebounds
Yale 36-21
Assists
Yale 13 of 31 (42%)
Points in Paint
Yale 42 Bucknell 12
Atkinson 15 pts, Swain 15, Bruner 13 (9 reb), Alausa 10, Monroe 5 (7 assists, 2 turnovers)
The ESPN announcers were quite impressed with Yale's play - 3 point shooting yesterday and dominant inside game today. They really were impressed with Atkinson, Burner and Swain. They were very positive towards Monroe and his role as a selfless distributor.
A couple of interesting notes from ESPN's Robbie Hummel (who was quite good). He pointed out that Atkinson almost exclusively goes to his right, which should be something Ivy teams may be able to exploit. Also, Monroe will need to shot more to keep teams honest and guard him.
Coach Jones was interviewed after the game.
While he thinks Monroe could shot a little more, he is quite fine with him concentrating on running the offense and being a distributor.
Cotton is being used like Swain last year - a guy who can come off the bench and get quick points
He is still deciding between Alausa and Williams as his 3rd post player

I was able to catch parts of this game and Yale CRUSHED them to pieces. Yale played 15 players and only made 4 3 pointers and beat them by 20 on a neutral floor.
This win moves Yale to 101 in KP rankings ahead of Penn and just behind Harvard.
Current rankings are:
- Harvard 95
- Yale 101
- Penn 109
For Harvard and Penn this is a wakeup that Yale is for real. Frankly I think Yale is more consistent than both Harvard and Penn due to injuries and youth (so could do very well in Ivy play), but Harvard and Penn have more upside (and downside).
Shame of it is if Yale had Oni and Harvard and Penn had injured players as healthy, this could have been a huge Ivy year. Still can be quite good, but just not where it could have been.

We are solid.
We were up 29 w 13 mins left and jj clearly auditioning for the 3rd big and generally heavy subbing. Atkinson and bruner are a tough tandem for any midmajor.
alausa was a beast. Swain was off on his 3 ball but scrapped his way to a solid game inside the arc which bodes well.
But now we enter the gauntlet after blowing the psu game.
Awesome to watch both games on espnu
Let’s go boys.

Agree. Yale beats Vermont comfortably at home. They appear to be for real once again -- Atkinson/Bruner/Swain are an impressive combo with Atkinson having really impressive numbers.
Coach Jones is an impressive coach based on how his teams have played especially over the past few years. Imagine if they had Oni with this group.

nice to get revenge on Vermont.
shout out to bruner who played great defense on Lamb!
I was particularly impressed with the close outs and screen hedging.
As we all know, lamb is a beast
and atkinson’s Footwork was stellar in the post.. I like bruner sitting down more in the post. We have been missing that and not surprisingly it led to a big game for him.
Swain missed some open ones as did cotton. Otherwise it wouldn’t have been this close.
Uvm does have some injuries to contend with.
Keep it up boys!

Credit to coach Jones for outstanding job on recruiting. Apart from Bruner, Atkinson & Swain, most of the guys didn't see much action last year. Coach Jones has a "next man up" mentality, which has led to their success so far. Remember, Oni was relatively unknown until he had to step up in Makai Mason's absence, so I expect a breakout year for a couple of players.

He seems to develop guys too. They have had an endless run of effective big men over the course of Jones’ time there. Sometimes they don’t appear until sophomore or junior year, but you can pretty much assume somebody will be ready to step up.

Very opportunistic (astute?) scheduling by Yale. Next two games at Clemson and UNC, each of which are experiencing down years. Clemson (5-5) has lost last 4 games while UNC (6-4) has lost 3 in a row. Clemson is KP #101 and Torvik #103. UNC is KP #36 but Torvik #59. Yale is KP #84 and Torvik #72.
Identifying and scheduling vs top Tier teams during an off year is a skill.

Yale sweeping is becoming leads far fetched. UNC’s central player Cole Anthony is injured and without him UNC lost at home to Wofford. Likely UNC gets blown out tomorrow at Gonzaga.
Yale has more than a prayer.

Clemson is not a great team and they have lost their fair share of games recently, albeit against very good competition, but they are an ACC team Yale was on the road. Impressive win by Yale and they played outstanding defense plus Atkinson is such a percentage scorer.
Coach Jones is one helluva coach. His teams play hard and more importantly they are tough both physically and mentally which stays a lot about the coach. He may not be the best recruiter or game strategist but he may well be the premier coach amongst his IL peers and there are several good IL coaches.

Yea their not great like Alabama etc.
But they have more khavon Moore’s than we do and he was probably the best player in ga 3 yrs ago which is a top b-ball state in the country.
Oh and he doesn’t start.
Time to write another check to the association.

I think James is a premier identifier of talent for his system.
Bruner was an obvious talent if you watched ball in the southeast 4 yrs ago.
But Paul Atkinson wasn’t this elite or even athletic. So developing this type of player is on the coaching staff.
This said I suppose Dayton and unc Wilmington both saw the same potential at the time.

Haven't seen them this year, but the last several years of Yale teams have not only had talent and skill but also impressive intangibles, such as everyone knowing his role and playing within himself and to his strengths, visible confidence, togetherness, etc. on the court. So given what they had coming back and Jones's recent track record, I'm not too surprised by their strong performance so far this season.
