Cowan hits 1-2 (17 in 2nd half).
Game ends 80-73.
Heck of an effort by Harvard. Maryland is a tough team. The Terps dominated the boards and Cowan took over in the 2nd half.

We just couldn't keep up on the boards, and our role players didn't make enough of their threes. Baker, Djuricic, Bassey, and Haskett combined for 3 of 14 from downtown. We needed that to be six or seven.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but we also won the turnover battle. If we can consistently keep our turnovers around this level, I like our chances. Especially if we ever get Seth back. Then we'd have a legitimate 1-2 scoring punch.
In any case, we have the talent to more than hang with top teams. Hope there isn't a letdown on Sunday, and we can finish the tournament on a high note.

Great game in a great environment with an energetic Harvard crowd.
Defense was superb, but rebounding was the problem. Tommy went very small for a spell and Lewis’ 4th foul was costly. As I said before the game, Lewis is moving extremely well, best in 2 years..
Couple of shots missed by us and couple made by them. Have to be encouraged by a great team effort. As has already been noted, let’s hope for another good performance on Sunday against another quality opponent.

If Harvard had a few big, Lewis-sized bodies to throw at the problem, it probably doesn’t get destroyed on the boards over the final 10 mins and has a good chance to win the game.
At the same time, if Harvard had those bodies - combined with its tremendous guards - it would probably be a clear Top 25 team expected to have a good chance to win the game.
The good news is that Harvard looks elite defensively. Only way Harvard’s defense has been embarrassed thus far has been if a team shoots 50+% from three.
Offense is still a work-in-progress. Turnovers are decreasing, and the turnovers recently have been ones derived from playmaking attempts rather than people getting themselves into bad situations. Pair that with better shotmaking (Harvard’s been down there vs last year), and Harvard should get into that Top 50 neighborhood most expected.
Even with a quality win chance in the 3rd place game, there’s just not enough left on the schedule to build a resume.

Bassey really killed them on offense, and his numbers are down across the board in the early going. What’s up with him?

His offense is mostly a bonus, but the 3PT slump to start hasn’t helped the team, for sure. That being said, I’m sure his 3PT% will rise, just as assuredly as Rio won’t remain a 50% shooter all year (both on 22 attempts).
As long as Bassey is the team’s elite perimeter stopper, the team can live with a slightly below average efficiency rating on low usage (that is as long as it has good, high usage offensive options on the floor).

On the other hand, Justin was fantastic on Thursday against A&M. Frustrating on the offensive end for sure, but lots of positives from today.

Huh... I never made that connection, but it’s interesting. And I *do* remember the long arguments about Belcore...
I think Bassey’s more elite defensively than Belcore was and Belcore’s usage was ridiculously low at times, but there’s definitely something there.

Another parallel—each of them playing with a super-high usage scoring PG.
