The first half is an unmitigated disaster-down 45-21. The worst half of basketball from a Columbia team in years.

Duquesne (7-0, KP#77) is a strong team this year.
Ran out Princeton 94-67 about a month ago and just won a tournament in the Bahamas.

Second half was worse. Complete blowout. Our personnel on the court this evening was totally outplayed. We looked better against teams like Virginia than we looked tonight. I do not want to single out anybody, but we are putting a few guys on the court who IMHO are not capable of playing D1 basketball.

We were totally and completely outgunned. It's not just that they were a better team, but we didn't look like we belonged on the same court. Don't know whether that is a real reflection of who we are, or the team is just getting worn down by the losses in noncompetitive games.
The women, however, seem to have got something going. They won their 5th straight against Davidson, a team that was previously 7-3.

They scored at will against a pathetic defense. And yes, this team cannot play defense, cannot create shots, cannot avoid turnovers, cannot rebound and cannot make open shots. this is the weakest roster since the last year of the Armond Hill era.

I posted the white flag at halftime and switched channels to the Columbia Women's Basketball Game against Davidson. I was rewarded with a sensational 63-60 comeback victory over a very strong Davidson team. Not that I was surprised, as I have watched nearly all of the women's games this season and they keep improving. The Lion Ladies have now won five consecutive games including victories over Davidson, Georgetown and three other schools that won their conference championships last year. Overall this is a very talented, athletic team. Senior Janiya Clemmons was the leading scorer tonight with twenty points, but she is just one of several very good players. Sophomore Sienna Durr is the fastest women on the planet Earth, and freshmen Abby Hsu and Kaitlyn Davis can leap mountains. Lots of other talented players too. And then you have a terrific game coach in Megan Griffith who never seems to miss anything on the court, and knows exactly what to do down the stretch including when to call time outs, Finally, I realize that despite their early success, the Columbia Women were projected by the "experts" in the pre-season poll fo finish seventh in the Ivy League. That's because Princeton, Penn, Harvard and Yale amongst others are also very good. But I'm betting on our Lion Ladies making it to the Ivy League Post-Season Tournament., specially if our fans get behind them. Go Lions!

Compare the MBB roster with the lineup for Kyle Smith’s last Columbia team: Lo; Mullins; Rosie; Luke; and Isaac Cohen. Except for Mike Smith, is there anybody on the current team who would have seen serious minutes? Perhaps a healthy Stef but that is it. And as good as Mike Smith is, he has obvious limitations at his height, which became all too apparent this evening when he tried to drive to the basket. And now compare what MG has done with WBB, after starting with a very bare cupboard. So while JE knows the game, I have now seen enough to conclude that he cannot recruit. As far as the “high school gymâ€, that has not seemed to hamper MG’s recruiting.

OK, I will take the bait.......As always, I agree with you, with a couple of minor exceptions, namely, (a) IMHO Kyle Smith would have found a way to give "serious minutes" to both Randy Brumant and Ike Nweke on his post-season Championship Team.(b) Kyle also recruited Killingworth, who is a good outside shooter and therefore, Kyle might have used him some; and (c) Forest would have seen action on Kyle's team. Incidentally, while I understand your frustration with everything that has happened in the Engles Era, I am not ready to concede that "he knows the game," unless that statement is intended merely as a pleasantry, and ignores his record at Columbia. Finally, for you to say that you have "now seen enough to conclude that he cannot recruit," suggests that you have no confidence in Engles' ability to be a winning coach at Columbia because it is doubtful that someone who simply "knows the game," but cannot recruit is ever going to be successful coaching in the Ivy League. Maybe at NJIT and other schools, but certainly not Columbia.

We are basically in agreement. JE if given D1 athletes could probably coach them. But we have too many players who are not legitimate D1 players seeing big minutes. The reason is that our recent recruiting is abysmal. I have refrained from naming names but it should be obvious that we have a huge talent deficit.

The same coach was there when at the end of the season C beat Penn (there), Brown (there), Yale, eventually champs (there) and Dart (home).
True, many close games were lost prior to that. But, the losses had much more to do with execution on both O and D than playing time for some, Xs and Os.
JE clearly keeps quiet perhaps too much. News about injuries is generally kept secret by most if not all coaches. Ditto illnesses.
What we don't know is what we done't know, as someone once said.

We do know that Coach Megan Griffith will be adding another standout recruit to the Columbia Women's Basketball Team next year, namely 6'1" forward Paige Lauder from Villa Maria Academy in Pennsylvania. Lauder is ranked as a three-star recruit by ESPN.

Are you sure about Lauder? Per her most recent Twitter, she has committed to Harvard.

We had a better roster last year, even without Smith—we had Tape, Stef and Adlesh.

cc 66, I see only Columbia on Paige Lauder's twitter account. My understanding is she committed to the Lions over a year ago.

Yes, I know. But I also saw a tweet in which she committed to Harvard, and I can't tell which was the most recent commitment.
Let's just hope you're right, and what I saw on line has been superseded.

She quote tweeted a friend who committed to Harvard, but all indications are that Lauder is committed to Columbia. Columbia '24 is part of her Twitter bio.
