Transfer Ryan Daly sure would have looked good on our side today, no? Obviously there could be extenuating circumstances with this case, but why in the world won’t Steve add transfer talent??? Maloney, Bowman, Toole, Oz...I don’t get it. Can anyone explain it to me? A fin aid issue or is this all Steve?

I don’t think that it’s not that we don’t want transfers... I think transfers just don’t work that way much any more. I see a lot more transfers up and lateral with not as many down. Because one and dones make for more fluid rosters on power 5 schools that has a knock on effect. That’s why you have guys like Tony Hicks managing time transfer to a blue blood program like Louisville.
On Ryan Daly to be clear... we offered him, he waited until after Betley committed, and we decided not to take him after he said he wanted to come to Penn. So he could have been on the team from day one...

Daly is the perfect example of the type of transfer we should be getting. Those guys are out there every year. The promise of a Penn degree plus playing time should be enough.

Another year with not even a sniff of someone transferring into our program. I just don’t get it. At this point is the idea dead forever? We just have to accept our position as losers and watch as the leagues top talent leaves? I guess none of the other Ivies are having success either?

The transfer portal has made movement much easier and the Ivies' insistence that no one play as a grad student makes transfer to the Ivies an exceptional event now.

Only transfers for this coming year are Patel (Cornell from VMI) and Meren (Brown from Skidmore). Columbia has Harding (from Bryant) for the following year.
Only transfer I can think of on a current roster is Smoyer (from Portland).

Yeah I get the frustration and I’m there with you, but the entire transfer market has changed...
Vast, vast majority of transfers from mid majors go up if they show even the faintest of heartbeats and performance. I’m talking about like kids from Holy Cross transferring to Illinois, Bucknell kids transferring to Ohio State, URI kids going to Kentucky. Then even when kids do nothing at a P5 school, instead of transferring down a couple levels either go to another P5 school or maybe go down a half to full level (e.g. from Big East down to A10).
Hundreds and hundreds of transfers, and I follow recruiting. Do you know how many times I saw Penn show interest in a transfer publicly this offseason? 0 times. Even with guys we showed interest in out of high school. Doesn’t mean we didn’t try, but if we did none of the kids bothered to mention it.
The real lack of any chatter also makes me wonder if it is harder to get transfers in now as well? That’s just complete speculation on my part but it is kind of odd since both Penn and Donahue as a coach have benefited a lot from transfers.

It is the direct result of one and done. P5 teams don't get to develop 4 year players (Villanova being a rare exception) and when their top talent leaves, as it always does, getting a 4 year Ivy player is a real benefit to them. The reverse market really doesn't exist anymore.

I understand not getting the Maloney's and Bowman's of the world anymore, but we can't land an Osmundson or even a Caleb Wood either?

Caleb Wood, was as far as I am aware, the only Juco transfer we ever got. It's rare for a junior college basketball player to qualify for an Ivy transfer.

Yep completely agree, the void from constant turnover means the big boys look anywhere for some experienced options.
Though one and dones could be changing with G League putting up real $$$.

We could put together quite the all-transfer team. Perry Bromwell, Andy Toole...

And almost all of them played crucial roles on title winning teams. Toole is another good one. He's the exact kind of kid that we should still be able to land once a decade. Look at the coaching pipeline we have created of grads in the last 20 years. Seems it could be a selling point for the born basketball leader at a small school who can picture a career in coaching after basketball.

Quakers03 is absolutely correct to be concerned about the absence of transfers. When you look back at the past 35 years, with two exceptions, teams that Penn has sent to the NCAA tournament have received significant contributions from one or more transfers.
1985: Perry Bromwell
1987: Perry Bromwell
1993: Matt Maloney, Andy Baratta
1994: Matt Maloney, Andy Baratta
1995: Matt Maloney, Ira Bowman
1999: (none)
2000: Oggie Kapetanovic (12.5 minutes per game as principal backup center to Geoff Owens)
2002: Andy Toole
2003: Andy Toole
2005: Eric Osmundson, Eric Heil
2006: Eric Osmundson
2007: (none)
2018: Caleb Wood

Didn't realize Baratta was a transfer. Where did he transfer from?

In 1989-90, Andy played at Clarion University, located 100 miles west of Penn State (State College) on Interstate 80.
