In a serious state of basketball withdrawal, so I could definitely use some good news, especially on the Bucknell basketball front.
Dedicated thread for news/rumors associated with next year's schedule, assuming COVID-19 doesn't linger into November.
Appreciate any updates, and hoping Bison Nation is staying safe and healthy!!

I think they will have the following return games:
- Hofstra (Away)
- Princeton (Away)
- Rider (Home)
- Albany (Away)
- Siena (Home)
Also two more possibilities:
1. I thought I may have heard a rumor that the Fairfield series was for four years. If so, then the Stags would likely be visiting Sojka this year.
2. It's always hard to tell where we stand in series with La Salle. In the most recent years, Bucknell traveled to La Salle in 2016-17, 2018-19, and 2019-20 (Palestra). La Salle came to Sojka in 2017-18. Do't know if this was one series or two, and whether there is still at least one game remaining.
Prior to the above five games, there had been a three year hiatius. Prior to that, Bucknell had played La Salle in six straight seasons from 2007-08 through 2012-13. Two of those six were in Sojka and four at La Salle.

Of course I'd like to see a couple games vs P6 conference teams. Beyond that, I'd like to see a renewal of a series with Mount St. Mary's, which is the second closest D1 program to Bucknell. I had heard that ND and Jamion Christian didn't want to play each other because of their personal relationship - but Christian has been gone now for a couple of years. No idea how Dan Engelstad, MSM head coach and former Holy Cross assistant, feels about it.
If not MSM, then I wouldn't mind seeing a renewal of the series with St. Francis, which is also a short trip. I think St. Francis' abrupt firing of Don Friday - where their AD fired Friday to put his son into the position the next day - may have soured that relationship for awhile. But a lot of time has passed, and SF won 22 games this year.
Btw, Friday's Penn State Harrisburg team had the best season in its history this year, going 14-2 in conference games, then winning its conference tournament, and finally winning its first NCAA game ever. I am happy for Don.

This is the Google Map that we have used in previous years. It shows all D-1 basketball programs:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?dg= featur...
As stated many times, I would be a fan of any games in the Philly area. It would be great if the Bison could pay Penn along with one of the other Big 5 schools or Drexel in a 2 game road trip over a long weekend.

If Bing is willing to play, that is a series that should be easy to arrange. Bryan Goodman has been a Bing assistant for the past seven years - and the Associate Head Coach for the last few. He and ND were on Flannery's staff together for three years (2003-06).

Home-and-home series with La Salle. Game in Sojka this year on December 2nd (assuming there is a season).
"Bucknell and La Salle will start a home-and-home series on December 2nd in Lewisburg. Return game in North Philadelphia in 21-22."

Summarizing the various items from earlier posts:
- Hofstra (Away)
- Princeton (Away)
- Rider (Home)
- Albany (Away)
- Siena (Home)
- Fairfield (Home) #
- Towson (Away)
- La Salle (Home)
# - not positive but I recall hearing this was a four-year series and the Fairfield board seems to think it is a done deal.

I just updated something I put together last year, showing Bison OOC games since the scholarship era began. Bucknell has had - by far - the best overall OOC schedules of any PL team, although it is hard to get good teams to want to play in Sojka, given BU's success there. Since the PL schedule went to 18 games in 2013-14, only once has there been more than four D1 home OOC games. That is where we are right now, but hopefully they can find one more.
2003-04 ( 13 ) Yale , Dickinson , Penn , Ursinus , Cornell - 4 D1 and 1 D2/D3
2004-05 ( 14 ) Rider , St. Francis , RMU , Niagara - 4 D1
2005-06 ( 13 ) Yale , Villanova , Cornell , Haverford , St. Joes - 4 and 1
2006-07 ( 14 ) Wake , No. Iowa * , Towson * - 3
2007-08 ( 15 ) Albany , Marist , St. Francis , LaSalle , Cornell , Ohio - 6
2008-09 ( 14 ) Boston U , ODU * , Wagner , Bing , Drexel , St Bona - 6
2009-10 ( 16 ) St Francis , Cornell , Loyola , Marist , Richmond - 5
2010-11 ( 16 ) Bing , Wagner , Columbia , Boston U , Dartmouth - 5
2011-12 ( 16 ) St Francis , Princeton # , W. Alabama # , Morehead # , Richmond , Loyola , Cornell - 7 (incl. 3 in tournament)
2012-13 ( 16 ) GMU , Dartmouth , Kent , LaSalle , Marist - 5
- - - - -
2013-14 ( 11 ) St Francis , Princeton , Columbia , Fairfield - 4
2014-15 ( 13 ) Marist , Mt. St. Mary , PSU , Albany , Case West. - 4 and 1
2015-16 ( 11 ) Shenandoah , Wake , Siena , Columbia , Fairfield - 4 and 1
2016-17 ( 13 ) Manhattan , RMU , Richmond , Mt. St. Mary , Princeton - 5
2017-18 ( 13 ) Siena , Ball St , Vermont , LaSalle - 4
2018-19 ( 12 ) Fairfield , Canisius , Northeastern , Monmouth - 4
2019-20 (13) Vermont, Hofstra, Princeton, Albany - 4
* = bracketbuster game
# = Legends Classic games at Bucknell
Number in parentheses is the total number of OOC games.

Remember that I'm only speculating about the return game - but that has been the past history. The recent games with Richmond have been in the following seasons:
2009 Away (Loss)
2010 Home (Loss)
2011 Away (Win - Willman's court-length pass to Muscala)
2012 Home (Win)
2017 Home (Win)
2018 Away (Win)
So there have been six games - three of them in Sojka. Bison lead the series 4-2. John Hardt is a current connection, but he was not at Richmond when any of the above six games were scheduled. It appears that Chris Mooney is a good guy who is willing to play good mid-majors on the road.

Hardt of course is now the Richmond AD, but I doubt he had much to do with scheduling this game. Mooney has been at Richmond since 2005 and I imagine he has almost complete authority to make his own schedule - within reason of course. The fact that he has played Bucknell six times shows that he didn't need John Hardt to suggest the Bison as a good opponent.

With the COVID-19 spikes that we are seeing around the country, it will be very interesting to see if any NCAA games happen at all in 2020-2021.
BTW, sports like baseball, softball, swimming, diving, track & field, cross-country, crew, golf, and tennis can socially distance to a certain extent, but I don't see how contact sports can be played unless the NCAA just accepts that people are going to get sick and lots of testing is needed.

I think wrestling may be one of the few indoor sports that can happen this year. While they contact us intense, it’s a one-on-one sport in which testing could keep the athletes safe.

I seriously doubt this will take place - or that Bucknell will be a part of it. Unless the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine project develops as fast as some are hoping. But on the off-chance it does . . .
In past years, this tournament has been structured like the NIT Tip-off event was last year, i.e. two games at the campus of two of the P6 teams, then a four-team mid-major bracket - with semi-finals, a consolation game, and a championship game. In other words, four games in all. However the article says "teams will be in the area an average of five or six days". To me that implies that all games will be on-site.
Right now there are apparently seven teams committed (three P5 teams and four mid-majors): Bucknell, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Mississippi State, Purdue and Rider. Having said that, East Tennessee State was really good last year - 16-2 in the SoCon and then an easy tournament championship - and could be put into the role of a major if necessary.
A full schedule for the Bison is unlikely to happen, but if it does, it would look like this:
- Hofstra (Away)
- Princeton (Away)
- Rider (Home)
- Albany (Away)
- Siena (Home)
- Fairfield (Home) #
- Towson (Away)
- La Salle (Home)
- Richmond (Away)
- Space Coast Challenge (games vs three or four of Clemson, East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Mississippi State, Purdue, Rider, and TBD.
# Haven't seen this game confirmed but two years ago it was reported that the teams had agreed to a four-game series.

Very questionable if this tournament will be played, but that's a tough group of games. Clemson was middle-of-the-pack last year in the ACC. ETSU was the #2 ranked mid-major, behind Gonzaga who really isn't a mid-major. And both Georgia Southern and Rider are fairly good mid-majors.

Not only is there a question as to whether thes games will be played, but if so, will spectators be permitted? Looks to me like this is a conference schedule only season, if that. At this point while I doubt there will be an ooc schedule, I am not ready to bet against a league schedule happening.

Also, what happens with travel to and from other states, particularly if travelers must quarantine after visiting certain states? I agree that OOC schedule is most likely not happening. If conference schedule happens in January, at this point my guess is no fans.

I'm setting my sights on next year for all spectator sports. End of March 2021 the beginning of baseball season is my starting point. This winter will be a winter of covid, disruptions, quarantines, etc. Gone are the days of a college basketball player getting the flu and trying to play through it or even sitting the bench. If one player gets it all go into quarantine and games will be cancelled. At best we may see news of a scrimmage or two. I see no light at the end of the tunnel until spring next year. Things will be back to the days of the past about 2030 at earliest.

Not likely a full schedule will be played, but putting together all of the above, this is what it looks like:
Nov. 10 - Towson (Away)
Nov. 20 - Clemson (Away) *
Nov. 24 - East Tennessee State (Neutral) *
Nov. 25 - Rider OR Georgia Southern (Neutral) *
Dec. 2 - La Salle (Home)
Dec. 20 - Richmond (Away)
TBD - Hofstra (Away)
TBD - Princeton (Away)
TBD - Rider (Home)
TBD - Albany (Away)
TBD - Siena (Home)
TBD - Fairfield (Home) #
TBD - Penn State (Away)
* Space Coast Challenge (new site for Cancun Challenge)
# Haven't seen this game confirmed but two years ago it was reported that the teams had agreed to a four-game series.
- - - - -
The only problem is that this is one more game than allowed under NCAA rules, so one of the games listed must be incorrect. Maybe Fairfield. Maybe one of the other return games. With a 50/50 chance of playing Rider in the tournament, maybe their visit to Sojka is going to be delayed a year.

I wasn't thinking when I typed the above. The NCAA passed a rules amendment effective on August 1st that allows teams to play 28 regular games plus one multi-team event that doesn't exceed three games. Thus the schedule shown above is legal - but it wouldn't have been if the tournament had called for four games for each participant as it has in past years.

With MLB already canceling games less than a week into their 60 game schedule due to players testing positive for COVID-19, it is looking more and more like NCAA sports may not happen. The only question for me involves M-O-N-E-Y. Will the Power Conferences play football so that they do not operate on a huge deficit?

PAC-12 effectively killed non-con schedules for all of its teams today by saying no games until, at a minimum, January 1, 2021. How long before mid-major conferences, Patriot League included, follow suit?

The NCAA's men's and women's basketball oversight committees are proposing that the start of basketball be pushed to Wednesday November 25.
With many schools ending their semesters at Thansgiving, there's a big push to take advantage of what's being called the "Golden Window." That's the time between Thanksgiving and the start of classes in January when players won't be mingling with potentially virus-carrying students as much and the lack of classes makes for abundant scheduling opportunities.
If the start is moved to Nov. 25 (the day before Thanksgiving), here's hoping we can reschedule our Fri Nov. 20 game at Clemson.

Just a quick note to add to this. Many schools are considering pushing back the start of 2nd semester to Feb 1, 2020. (no real inside information on the start date, just something I have heard suggested) This would give the team more than 2 months of time on campus with no classes or extra students to increase the risk of infections.

Speaking of Covid, so far things have gone well on the Bucknell campus. There have been 11 cases found out of 15,600 tests that have been conducted. That is an infection rate of 0.07%.
They are sticking to the planned schedule of testing every student at least once every 10 days, and faculty/staff about every 14 days. Everyone also had to pass two tests in the run-up to their return to campus. At present, only five students are in quarantine.
Hopefully this sort of infection rate will continue, but there is always a possibility of an outbreak.

Come on, we need LEAGUE STANDINGS. How many forfeited the fall campus covid competition?

Don’t know about the patriot league, but I know who would be in last place if there were a Pennsylvania League. Over the same time period when Bucknell has had 11 cases, Bloomsburg U has had 249 cases and rising.
Colgate, btw, had 27 cases in the last week of August alone. It’s hard to tell their grand total, since the dashboard they use is awful, but it is safe to assume the number must be around 50+.

By “forfeit,†I was wondering how many league schools closed their campuses for the fall. Lafayette and Lehigh?

Patriot league schools that are fully open: Army, Navy, Bucknell, Colgate, and Boston University
Online: American, Loyola, Holy Cross, Lafayette. Also Lehigh except for freshmen. Most of this group is also allowing athletes on campus at some point.
A number of Lafayette alumni were upset by their decision, since it seems like Lafayette should’ve been able to reopen as easily as Bucknell or Colgate. It was a lot simpler to shut down. Holy cross to a lesser extent. The one that will be challenging is Boston University, which plans to re-open and follow a normal schedule. Meaning students will return after Thanksgiving for a few weeks. I will be surprised if they pull it off without significant problems

Do you think it’s likely the game at Clemson will be rescheduled for after the Orlando games Thanksgiving week?

I am not at all optimistic that any of those games will be played. Remember that not only the Clemson game but also the first game in Florida are both scheduled for dates prior to November 25.
Also I am not sure that Bucknell is going to approve a trip that involves flying, especially to a state where the covid rate is fairly high at the moment.
One other note: the Florida games are not in Orlando but rather in Melbourne, over on the Atlantic coast near Cape Canaveral. Maybe 75 minutes from Orlando.

Jon Rothstein reported that the Cancun Challenge was considering moving the Melbourne (thank you for the correction) start date from the 24th to the 25th.

The 13 game minimum is interesting. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, this is the minimum number of games that need to be played to be eligible for the NCAA tournament. With the Ivy League not starting until January and the potential for canceled games, I wonder what would happen if an Ivy League champion ends up playing only 12 games. Probably unlikely but possible.

Out of interest, has the PL sent out anything about the basketball season? It would not surprise me if it is limited to PL schools, but you never know. The pay-for-play games really impact most schools' bottom lines.
