I just saw that the great Heyward Dotson died last Friday. Had heard that he had been in failing health. He was the toughest player I had ever seen. What a remarkable man—brilliant Stuyvesant High grad, Rhodes scholar from Columbia, graduate of Columbia Law. I had heard that he was in failing health for years. Sad to realize that both Heyward and the great Jimmy Mac are both gone.

Condolences to the Columbia community. It hurts to hear that we've lost another Ivy great.

Extensive and proper obit in Today’s NY Times. With his extraordinary gifts I could never quite understand why he never achieved greatness in his post-basketball life.

Not everyone is cut out for success as a lawyer. It appears that Dotson was more of a scholar than a business person. And coming from Columbia Law and having worked at Shea & Gould myself, I can easily see how that can turn a person against the practice of law. It was a high pressure, pretty abusive atmosphere and many could not take it. But his accomplishments still stand up.

I had not meant to demean him; his accomplishments certainly will stand the test of time. And he certainly had a mind of his own.
