Good game--that had better be a home and home

I don't believe it is a home and home. I think it is a guarantee game. Anyway, Williamsburg is nice in the fall - let's hope it's safe enough to travel by then.

Old Dominion is in Norfolk. Williamsburg is home to William and Mary.

I lived in Norfolk for four years. It ain't bad in the fall either.

But why on earth are we taking guarantee games from a middle of the pack C-USA team? I am sick of this---as a season ticket holder, they simply pee all over us--charge us for games we don't see, move us in favor of big donors when we pay for the seats, and consistently fail to play competitive games at home other than the Ivies and Big 5. Especially in these times, I'd like to quote my Bro, Blake Snell (editorial license taken):

"Bro, I’m risking my life . . . What do you mean it should not be a thing? It should 100% be a thing. If I’m gonna attend games, I should be getting the games I signed up to see. I should not be getting Widener or Penn State-Brandywine or Stockton or Ursinis because the season’s cut in half.

“Y’all gotta understand, man, for me to go, for me to see these games is not happening, because the risk is through the roof, it’s a shorter season, fewer good games . . . I gotta get my money's worth. I’m not watching unless I get good games, okay? And that’s just the way it is for me. Like, I’m sorry you guys think differently, but the risk is way the hell higher and the crappy games I'm getting are way worse, why would I think about doing that? Like you know, I’m just, I’m sorry.”

If conditions improve, and for those willing to take the risk:

Mister Shawarma in Norfolk. Wow. The Nations, as part of their road trip to Florida two summers ago, stopped here for dinner. Food so good you'd think you were in Israel (well, it is run by Israelis). Kosher, but you wouldn't know it--so many locals love it that when you walk in it seems like any other place.

Also stopped here the next day--worth a visit if you have the time:

Calm down P38. I said I THINK it is a guarantee game - I could be wrong. Let's get some facts (I know that is not current national policy) first.

And no one is forcing Blake Snell to play. Wonder if he could make the same amount of money (even the reduced amount) if he were not a major league baseball player.

I obviously was tongue in cheek quoting Blake Snell. But he is right---he has a contract, which does not foist the risk on him. The owners have all the equity--are they offering him a piece of the value of their franchises if it goes up (as it always does)? Who takes the risk of a pandemic affecting the business? Who could have purchased insurance to cover the risk (Wimbledon did)? This is not a close call, albeit Blake Snell comes off like a stoned Bro in that interview.

I have no idea if this is a guarantee game or not, but I'll be honest and say I tend to doubt it.

Other non-Ivy schools are STRUGGLING with finances right now. Literally Power 5 schools even are cutting programs all together.

I don't imagine Old Dominion is in a financial position to shell out money, and in fact I would guess that they would be volunteering to get paid to go play a big boy...

Oh and for the record, I would much rather we play Old Dominion than say a Rice from C-USA. Old Dominion has been a good mid major in the past, and was very good in the last few years (but beatable). I think they would continue to be more likely to be a good squad than Rice would.

I'm still just getting over that early season Rice loss. Talk about confusing. I know we went 3-22 from 3 but that was just ugly.

My concern in the long run is not losing a game at Rice, but that we are unable to get middle of the road teams to play home and home. I would rather play Iona with Pitino as coach and other MAAC teams home and home than bogus football conference teams on the road with no return game.

From a scheduling perspective, I don't disagree with you BUT the guarantee games bring financial support to the program. What we have to hope for is that those two, sometimes conflicting, tensions are resolved in a manner that is best for the program as a whole.

Thanks for tha info. Wonder what the logistics of such a trip for one game will be during the upcoming season. Gonna guess that Jamie Dixon and Steve Donahue have some relationship from the ACC. While I suspect that may be a guarantee game, maybe it IS a home/home.

Hello,

Current undergrad here, longtime peruser of the Penn board who just got an account approved, and diehard fan.

I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to if we have tried, and if so why haven’t we been successful, to schedule a game at home with Penn State. Clearly, Pat Chambers is a Philly guy who loves to bring his team here, and I have no doubt this would be a sellout game. Not to mention playing another ranked opponent at home besides our biannual duel with Villanova would be a draw to recruits and current students alike. Would appreciate any insight!

It's a good question. Economics and other scheduling constraints always prevail over city loyalty. The Chambers family has deep Penn ties. Also PSU always draws a full house when they to come to Palestra to play other Big5 teams; then there is the exposure to Philly recruits.

Yea I think Penn St wants a Home game at the Palestra, being a Visitor is less appealing.

Wouldn't be surprised to see either NCAA - or maybe Ivy League- elminate OOC in an attempt to save the season.

Hard to send kids home in November (which some schools suggested they may do as a precaution) and justify travel.

Welcome! It's always great to get an undergrads perspective. The opening game my freshman year was PSU at the Palestra. Unfortunately for me I was visiting my wife for a dance and after convincing the student union place to switch off of a random NCAAF to put on their own basketball team, we lost after Ugonna stuck a game tying 3 about 1 second too late. Being taunted by new PSU basketball fans was sweet. For the few current students who are local and actually care about sports, I'd imagine it's a fun potential game to have with friends who are in State College.

We also opened up against them in 2002 and smashed them. I can see myself in the front row with the P painted on my chest.

We also played them in December 1995 (the year after Matt Maloney, et al graduated) at the Atlantic City Convention Center and Pete Lisicky dropped what appeared to be about 1,000 points on us.

It was a long drive home.

One of my favorite memories was listening to the Penn vs Penn St. game around 1992 on the radio. Penn walked off the court, believing they had won the game. The refs called them back to the court, adding time to the clock. The DP reported that Paul Chambers was getting ready to head to the showers and had to scramble to find his shorts and get back on the court. That team was tough as nails. It wasn't one of our most talented teams, but no Penn team has defended better and played above its talent more. They didn't give anything to other teams and consistently out rebounded much bigger and more athletic teams.
