- We are planning for a range of different scenarios for the coming year, including variations of the following:
A scenario in which we are able to follow our normal academic calendar, welcoming all students back to campus in the fall.
A scenario in which the University offers three semesters of instruction next year and arranges for undergraduate students to be on campus for two of these semesters, thus providing an environment with fewer students on campus at any one time.
A scenario in which health conditions are such that the fall semester has to be conducted remotely, with a decision about the spring to be made in the middle of the fall semester. -

- Our primary goal must be to create as rich an academic experience as possible, in whatever form that will take, while preparing to bring us back together at the earliest feasible moment. No doubt social distancing techniques will be with us for some time, which, of course, complicates the logistics of the return. Taking these and other factors into account, we have made one key decision: to prepare to use the three upcoming academic terms—fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021—as a unit of time in order to provide us with the greatest amount of flexibility in organizing our educational experiences. -

- Option 0 Normal calendar with everything online.
Option 1 Fall starts at the regular time on-campus and then wraps up online after Thanksgiving. Spring starts online at the regular time and switches to on-campus early March.
Option 2 Fall starts four weeks later on-campus, then switches to online after Thanksgiving, and wraps up in January. Spring starts end of January online and switches to on-campus mid-March.
Option 3 Fall starts two weeks later on-campus, stages an “final-exam-like†week just before Thanksgiving, then switches to online after Thanksgiving, and wraps up in December. Spring starts at the regular time online, then switches to on-campus early March, and wraps up in usual way one week later than normal
Option 4 Same as Option 3 except the Fall semester is split into a pair of half-semesters. The first starts just after Labor Day, is entirely on-campus, and ends with an exam period late October. The second half-semester begins shortly thereafter and switches to online after Thanksgiving.
Option 5 Same as Option 3 except the Fall semester is split into an 11-week module and a 5-week module. The former has on-campus final exams. The latter is online after a 2-day on-campus start. Students would take 3 or 4 courses in the first module and just one course in the second. A course offered in either module must be taught at an accelerated pace so that it “looks like†the normal 14-week version. -

- How will the 2020 fall term be structured?
Dartmouth intends to bring some number of undergraduates back to live and study on campus this fall—the largest number we feel can be accommodated while minimizing risk for students, faculty, staff, and our neighbors in the Upper Valley. In the most likely scenario, we expect to have a mix of in-person and virtual classes in the fall for both undergraduates and graduate and professional students. We will also need to modify the ways in which students live to achieve less density in our residence and dining halls and maintain capacity for students who fall ill or need to self-quarantine.
The COVID-19 Task Force is working to address other operational matters related to our gradual return, such as whether off-campus programs can run this fall, what facilities we will designate for quarantine and isolation space, and a host of other issues. As has been our process since the start of this pandemic, recommendations from the task force will be presented to senior administrators for consideration, taking into account the latest data on the spread of the virus. Our goal is to communicate final decisions on fall term operations by June 29. -

- In light of the challenges before us, we want to share four major scenarios currently under consideration. Some of these could be productively combined. The four scenarios are:
A hybrid experience with some in-person instruction. In a mostly online learning environment, classroom instruction would be offered for small seminars, research group meetings, experiential clinics, studios, and other courses enrolling no more than 25 students. These classes could be offered in lecture halls and other large venues that accommodate physical distancing and facial coverings and could even include newly installed Plexiglas barriers for separating lecturers from the audience. All larger classes of more than 25 students would be delivered online, even for those living on campus.
An in-person experience ending at Thanksgiving break. In this scenario—compatible with the hybrid experience described above—the fall semester would begin and end on schedule, but all on-campus activities would conclude as Penn breaks for Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, the remainder of the fall semester would be conducted online. In some cases, in order to ensure the required hours of instruction, some classes might schedule additional meetings in the early evening and/or on Saturdays.
More robust summer course offerings in 2021. To maintain flexibility for our students, we could offer expanded class options, in addition to our current strong summer programming, during the summer of 2021, providing greater opportunities for earned academic credits and cohort-based experiential learning. This scenario is also compatible with the first two scenarios above and would enable us to accommodate an even wider range of educational needs and preferences.
An entirely online experience for the fall semester. In the event that the pandemic precludes us from bringing students back to campus in the fall, we would then conduct all fall semester instruction, mentoring, and advising at a safe distance via technology. In this scenario, we would make every effort to bring students back to campus as soon as possible and to preserve class traditions, including for our entering Class of 2024. This scenario is distinct from the first two scenarios above but compatible with the third.

- The Academic Continuity Committee is developing educational contingency plans with input from the community. Even though we are all eager to know what to expect in the fall, many details cannot be resolved until we have more information about the path of the pandemic. We continue to make plans for both a residential education or for instruction online. As stated by President Salovey in his April 21 message, a detailed announcement about these plans and decisions for the fall will be released by early July. However, there is a key recommendation from the committee that we have accepted and can report now:
Yale University will begin fall semester 2020 on time. Classes in Yale College will begin the week of August 31. Most graduate and professional programs will start on schedule beginning after August 15, although some orientation activities will be rescheduled or conducted remotely. To maximize the chances that we can hold classes in person, there may be adjustments to the academic calendar that will limit the number of times that students travel to and from campus, and the schedule of courses may be expanded to utilize all the hours of the work day and the work week to accommodate social distancing. The graduate and professional school deans will be providing more details to their communities soon, and detailed information about the Yale College academic calendar will be announced by the end of May. -
