I don't know why Harvard should have a lower defer rate than other schools---I would think it would be just as high if not higher. The on-campus experience is hugely important--what is Harvard without the connections you get by being on campus? As long as you don't jeopardize the opportunity to get the sheepskin, why not put it off a year?

A lot probably depends on your home situation. A single dorm room on a campus with a couple of thousand students in the heart of Cambridge might seem desirable to an 18-22 year old otherwise cooped up at home. Same circumstances for all Ivies of course.

I can see seniors not being in a rush to finish in this job environment and without the benefits of a normal senior year. Could see sophomores and juniors interested though, but I beleive Harvard (and others) cut them out of the offer to come on campus (with exceptions for those with needs to be there).

Aren't "defers" only freshmen to be? I do not believe those taking a year off are considered to be "defers"

Yes, you are correct that only freshmen are ‘defers.’

I guess I was referencing the following statement from the article that went beyond freshmen: “Harvard had also anticipated 40% of their undergraduate population choosing to live on campus; they now expect only 25% based on the number of students who have accepted the invitation to do so.”
