Don’t look now, but Michigan is 8-0, and Mike Smith has been excellent. In beating a good Maryland team on the road, Mike led Michigan in minutes played at 39, had 16 points including a perfect 2-2 from 3, along with 6 assists. It is now fair to say that he is in the running as one of the top true PGs in the country. At the risk of soiunding like a broken record, J’accuse the Columbia coaching staff and athletic department to allow our MBB program to sink to such depths that we could only squeeze a single IL win out of a team with Mike Smith.

Had Tape and Stefanini been healthy and played, Columbia would have absolutely qualified for the tournament. The hue and cry on this thread would have been deafening when the League cancelled it though.

Oh, and the two 2020 games I saw Smith play in person he averaged 43.5 minutes!

All around great game for Smith today with 16 points and 6 assists on 6/9 shooting in a dominant win for Michigan against #9 Wisconsin

Michigan beats Maryland by 13 in the Big 10 Quarterfinals.

Mike Smith was the player of the game - 18 points, 15 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 0 turnovers

Smith leads a stirring comeback, and they let him control the ball down 1 with the clock running out, takes a beautiful step back 3 and it looked good,

but wasn't.

Guy showed he was a big time player, though.

Excellent game by Mike today; 18 points and 5 assists plus a textbook display of how to run the point. Again, when one compares him to the first team IL guys doing a PG year at other schools the infamy of keeping Mike off the first team IL become even more obscene. J’accuse all those coaches who didn’t vote for him of terminal bias, stupidity, venality or all three.

He played a wonderful game today -- impressive. Unfortunately, he did not have enough support at Columbia to get the recognition that he deserved.

It would be good to see Michigan making a run to the Final Four so Smith gets even more recognition.

Some really good games over the past 2 days.

What a run by Michigan with Mike as PG. Even we he doesn’t score in bunches he runs the court like another coach on the court. Wouldn’t it be great to see them go all the way!!

I admit that I had some skepticism as to whether it would work for him. The question going up to a high major is whether you can handle being something other than the lead guy, and Smith’s play at Columbia suggested to me that he needed to be the lead guy. Turns out he didn’t, and he has fit perfectly into what Michigan does.

Michigan is my other alma mater and thus always the non-Penn team that I root for. Having Smith on the team has made it extra fun pulling for them this year.

Lead scorer, no. But lead guy, yes. He runs the point beautifully. He scores enough, but his real value is his ball handling, his court vision, and his basketball smarts.

Smith was not getting a lot of love today on ESPN radio primarily base on his size. Typical Ivy League BB player commentary -- he is a smart young man with high BB IQ but he really is not all that talented. It would be great if he hits a game winning shot.

He is the last Grad Transfer student playing with the highest performance of any IL transfers.

Unlikely that someone will beat Gonzaga other than Baylor but time will tell. Zags may have historic season during COVID season and some experts prognosticated that the Big Dance would never be held -- good call.

What a weird game....UCLA had 2 guys who scored more than 4 points, were outrebounded and down 5 in the last 90 seconds. How can you lose to a single guy (Juzang) in the Final 8? And Michigan took far too many outside shots when it wasn't working. But that is the NCAA tournament, especially this year--a lot of late game collapses and upsets.

Michigan was missing all shots, outside, inside, FTs, you name it, M was missing them. I've seen all of M's games this season. What's mysterious is that UCLA's D was not in any way better than those played by various Big Ten teams whom M beat.

Smith played solid defense along with playing a very controlled offensive game. Either Michigan's coach had Smith under wraps offensively or the level of competition is at a such different level than the IL -- I suspect both. Smith's size was somewhat offset by the the size of UCLA's point guard.

Walkaway from the game is that it would have been a big plus for the IL if Harvard was able to recruit both Juzangs.

After watching the Baylor/Arkansas game, the athletic of Big Five players is so different than the IL.

I could have sworn that a team getting boat-raced would be losing handily.

Great game going into OT -- unbelievable action and excitement. Zags may survive in OT. Whoever gets Baylor will face a great challenge.

I don't know that Zags are, as some have said, the best team ever, but they have earned their success.

Barkley, Smith and crew described it as one of the best NCAAM games EVER with an amazing ending. UCLA played a perfect game and just could not be the Zags setting up a classic final.

Players and coaches will remember this game for the rest of their lives as well as the season played during challenging times.

A group of IL players and a coaching staff were denied the opportunity to have a memory for their lifetime just participating in a great tournament. The NCAAM, for a change, deserves credit for pulling off the so called impossible.

They showed they don't care about athletics, preferring to maintain the absolute fiction that Ivy athletes are and must be treated the same as non-athletes.

I did not know that Board existed until I read your post.

I don't need another excuse to spend more time on the Internet.
