Maybe you all know differently, but I find this news a bit surprising.

A good move for Brown. Now, the clock is on for Penn.

Payback for Miller?

I'm ambivalent about this. I'm sure there is a backstory there, maybe the DP will break it for us ;-) Aside from returning to Brown, I get the sense that she was lured with more positional standing, and likely a big raise.

Dr. Calhoun has done a pretty good job for Penn, all things considered, but her biggest achievement has been raising her personal profile.

Earlier this week, the DP had a story mentioning how Gale Sayers almost became the Penn AD in 1979.

Interesting.

Not the first time Sayers had been on the Penn campus:

With respect to the Dartmouth AD job, here is a 2/11/21 article from the Valley News.

https://www.vnews.com/dartmouth-athletic-di rector-...

- The 68-year-old helped Dartmouth stay competitive in the Ivy League facilities race, unveiling the largest permanent indoor practice facility in the league this past spring. He was a strong fundraiser, too, leading the charge to have 14 coaching positions endowed.

Yet his retirement was announced unceremoniously on Tuesday, coming 11 days after the reinstatement of five varsity sports to comply with Title IX gender equity rules. His successor will have to deal with whatever the multiple reviews unveil about the department’s failures. -

- How alluring the job may be is up for debate. Taking over a department reeling from controversy with a president who’s voiced limited support for athletics doesn’t help. Plus, the job pool shrinks when asking qualified candidates to move to Hanover. -

The favorites

Brian Mann: two-time Dartmouth graduate (bachelor’s degree in 2002 and a master’s degree in 2013). He’s currently the associate athletic director for development and chief development officer for University of California athletics. Before Cal, he worked at Rice.

Sherryta Freeman: Lafayette athletic director and Dartmouth alumna (played for women's basketball team), has vast experience in the world of Division I athletics. She was a public information assistant in the Ivy League office before serving as the assistant AD for compliance at Dartmouth from January 2004 to August 2005. She’s also been a senior administrator at Penn and Temple.

Peter Roby: Presently is the Interim Dartmouth AD. He's a Dartmouth alum (played on men's basketball team), former Dartmouth basketball assistant coach and former Northeastern AD (2007-2018). He was also vice president of U.S. marketing at Reebok and served six seasons as head men’s basketball coach at Harvard (1985-1991).

Local ties

Drew Galbraith: William & Mary alum and present Trinity College athletic director (since 2017). Prior to Trinity, he spent 14 in the Dartmouth athletic department.

Betsy Mitchell: Former Olympic gold medalist and present California Institute of Technology’s athletic director (since 2011). She was the Dartmouth women’s swimming coach from 1990-1996. She has also been he served as the AD at Laurel School for Girls in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.

Laurel Richie: is a Dartmouth alum and the former WNBA president (2011-2015, She’s presently the chairman of Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees and a leadership consultant to Fortune 100 executive-level managers at Merryck & Co.

Wild cards

Ryan Bamford: Presently, the UMass-Amherst AD (since 2015). He has worked in athletic departments at Plymouth, UNH, Yale and Georgia Tech.

Bethany Ellis: Presently, the AD at Division III Wellesley College. She is a Yale alum (played women's basketball), who spent five years working at Boston University as senior AD for student athlete development.

Buddy Teevens: Presently, the Dartmouth football coach. He has also coached at Tulane and Stanford.

Dartmouth announced its search committee to replace interim AD Peter Roby. The group, which includes senior Taurus Samuels, will look to find someone to start on July 1.

https://home.dartmouth.edu/news/2022/03/finding- da...

- The search committee, chaired by Associate Dean for the Social Sciences John Carey, will be assisted by Daniel Parker and DeLaina Jordan of the search firm Parker Executive Search, which recently conducted successful searches for the athletic directors at the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Brown. The committee hopes to have a new athletics director in place by July 1. -

Cornell's Andy Noel will step down after the school chooses a new AD sometime after the end of this academic year. He's been in charge for 23 years and at Cornell for the last 42 years.
