Cannady led his 6th seeded Lakeland Magic to the G-League Championship today, as they defeated the Delaware Blue Coats 97-78. Cannady was named Finals MVP with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in the Championship game, including shooting 9-17 overall and 4-9 on three pointers.

Devin had a terrific game -- 22 out of the team's 97 pts with 5rb, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot. Next scorer had 12 pts and most importantly, he once again received the most amount of minutes.

He is playing very much under control and his game is somewhat different and better than his days at Princeton. Biggest difference is that he plays much harder and better on the defensive end even though he gives up several inches.

He obviously still has the dream to play in the NBA.

He was a helluva player at Princeton as well. Don't know if he is an NBA player, but being MVP of a title G-League team shows the guy really knows how to play

When Devin played for another G League team, he ran up the stands to visit with Coach Carril at a Princeton game to share with Pete how he had elevated his defensive game. Perhaps, Devin came to the conclusion that he was not going to get a shot at the NBA unless he changed his approach to Defense. His height is a detriment to some degree but he is obviously extremely athletic but never made the total commitment to defense during his time at Princeton.

Always thought that Coach Henderson did not push Devin hard enough on the defensive end but just an opinion.

Perhaps, Devin has simply matured as a player to the next level. He will never be a great defender but he is a better defender. His shot and offensive skills have not changed much other than going to the hoop a little more and passing out for assists at times. He may have been an even better jump shooter at Princeton but a lot has to do with the defense played in the G League vs. the IL.

Cannady is the 6th player to win the G League Finals MVP, but the first one who was undrafted. The other five all got shots in the NBA, including 2017 MVP Pascal Siakam, who became an NBA All-Star in 2020.

Devin signed a 10 day contract with the Orlando Magic this morning. Little bit of a crowded back court but hopefully he'll get a chance for some minutes!

I suspect that making a NBA roster will be a crowning achievement as long as he plays one minute in the NBA. If he gets a chance, Devin will obviously need to drain a high percentage of 3 pointers. He has overcome a number of obstacles, especially his height.

I doubt that he will have a career in the NBA but hopefully, I am wrong.

Very few IL BB players have come this far.

Devin made his NBA debut on Wednesday night, playing 2 minutes for the Orlando Magic, getting 1 steal and going 2-2 from the free throw line.

Cannady is the first Princeton player to play in the NBA since Steve Goodrich in 2002.

Very happy for Cannady. He always had that little bit of swagger to go with his talent that made you feel something good could happen at any moment. Those stretches where he got hot in the clutch were some of the most entertaining fan experiences you could have.

The Orlando Magic have signed guard Devin Cannady to a two-way contract, the team announced Friday.

The deal also includes a non-guaranteed two-way contract for next season, according to league sources.

GO DEVIN!

What is a “two way” contract???

My cynical nature suspects that this is some legal device to hold onto a player without accruing retirement or other league benefits.

Per this site, for the shortened 20-21 NBA season all 2-Way players are receiving flat salaries of $449,155 rather than salary being determined by days with the NBA team

He is already "called up". In other words, he is on the NBA roster. He played last night.

Devin scored 8 points several nights ago on 2 for 2 3pt shooting. He needs to hit 3 pointers at a pretty high percentage to have the opportunity to continue playing in the NBA.

I am pleased for Devin to have the opportunity to play in the NBA and he has put in a lot of time and effort post Princeton. I must admit that it was somewhat disappointing at times regarding his career at Princeton. He did not make the commitment to play defense for the majority of his career and not sure about his team leadership but perhaps he was somewhat immature especially during his senior season. He had a wonderful offensive career at Princeton that would have truly been special if he hit the 3 pointer against Notre Dame. Not sure if Mitch demanded enough from Devin especially on the defensive end although maybe he could not push him too hard.

He still has a long uphill climb to have a NBA career but he has made the first step. Will the Magic or someone else give him a chance next year and will Devin be good enough to capitalize?? Hopefully but questionable.

I think every NBA team is allowed two 2 way players. it means they can interchangeably call a player up from G League and then move them back while retaining their rights. All others have to be moved up and then released/resigned opening it up for other teams to take them. I’m 90% sure thats what it is.

Right, but since the G-League season has been over for more than a month, a two-way contract now means you're on the NBA roster for the rest of the season. And, since so many players have missed games due to Covid and more injuries from the compressed schedule, the two-way players give an NBA team a larger available roster each night.

Devin had a team and career high 17 points on 7/11 shooting (3/5 from 3) in Orlando's blowout loss tonight to the Pelicans. He added 3 rebounds and 2 steals in 24 minutes played, also a career high. He's averaging 19 minutes per game over Orlando's last 3 games

With 17 points, Cannady now has 34 career NBA points, and has passed Steve Goodrich for 7th all-time among Princeton players. A long way to go to get to #6.

1) Geoff Petrie (1970-76) - 9732 points
2) Bill Bradley (1967-77) - 9217
3) Brian Taylor (1972-82) - 7868
4) Armond Hill (1976-84) - 3214
5) John Hummer (1970-76) - 2248
6) Bud Palmer (1946-49) - 1737
7) Devin Cannady (2021) - 34
8) Steve Goodrich (2000-02) - 24

Thanks for that list. I feel fortunate that I watched Hummer, Petrie and Taylor as an undergrad.

Is there a similar list for each Ivy school somewhere?

Most importantly, Orlando Head Coach has taken notice of Devin in post-game interview. He needed a break out game as to hitting a bunch of 3 pt shots. The Magic are a simply horrible team so Devin is in the right spot. His challenge is to keep hitting 3 pointers while playing an acceptable level of defense. Shooting at a 37.5% 3 pt clip will not be good enough.

His biggest challenge remains that he really is a shooting guard vs. a point guard who can shoot at 6'2". He simply has little to no point guard experience but his dream lives on.

Question is whether Ryan Fitzpatrick's lifetime pro sports earnings of over $77 million (with another $10 million coming in this year for the WFT) will ever be topped by an Ivy League athlete.

Good catch, 826 total points, or 206, depending on what you consider to be "NBA" stats:

Ugh just awful, awful news: Cannady fractured his ankle tonight, and had to be taken out on a stretcher. I didn't see the video, but, from the sound of things, it might have been one of those really gruesome breaks where the leg bends the wrong way. Best case scenario is probably a very long recovery time.

It's been so impressive to see him work his way up from the G League to the NBA. Hope he gets another shot.

Unfortunately was a very gruesome injury for Devin on a freak play, he was contesting a layup and landed awkwardly. There was blood on the court and his teammate Mo Bamba took off his jersey to cover Devin's leg as soon as it happened. The Magic say it was an open fracture, which is typically around a 12 month recovery period at least it seems.

Devin has posted to Twitter this evening, and Bamba posted a screenshot of Devin on FaceTime with his Orlando teammates after the game, so good to see that he is in good spirits all things considered. Really awful luck and timing as he was just getting real minutes. Hopefully Devin has a successful recovery and bounces back

Greatly saddened by this.

I would imagine it is very difficult to regain full joint mobility after such an injury.

Devin underwent surgery this morning on his ankle. The Magic provided an update on his situation, saying that after further evaluation, the bones and cartilage remained intact. His injury is now listed as an "open right ankle dislocation with a severe lateral ankle sprain", and while he is out for the remainder of this season, he is expected to make a full recovery. Sounds like positive news that the bones and cartilage are intact at least

That's great news compared to the alternative. Not sure what the timeline is for that type of injury, but sounds like there's a real chance he could be back for the start of next season?

After a tough injury recovery and rehab, Devin is back on the court tonight with the Lakeland Magic. He scored 5 points in 7 minutes off the bench in the first half tonight:
