Apparently Scheyer only became the preferred option over Amaker in the last maybe three or four years. Phew.

That's far from decided. Once Coach K is out, the battle will begin unless he gets his guy under contract before he leaves. There will be significant support for Amaker.

Again, ESPN's Woj is reporting Scheyer has "agreed" to become the HC. It's a done deal.

There are precedents for trading a coach for players! Not in college though.

I posted this on the IL board:
Excerpt from the long Athletic article today:
"Scheyer never tried to find out who else was up for the job during those interminable six days. Multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic that the other candidate most seriously considered was Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, who played for Krzyzewski from 1983-87 and was his assistant for nine seasons. Amaker, 56, is as well-respected as any member of the Duke basketball family, and his 24 years experience as a head coach, including previous stops at Seton Hall and Michigan, was an asset Scheyer couldn’t match. On at least one occasion, Amaker spoke directly with Krzyzewski about the job. The biggest hurdle for Amaker’s candidacy was the fact that taking the job would require him to leave Harvard and return as an assistant at Duke for the coming season. There is precedent for this — Matt Painter left his post as head coach at Southern Illinois in 2004 to spend a season as Purdue’s head coach-in-waiting under Gene Keady — but in this case, Amaker would be joining a staff that included the other primary candidate in Scheyer. In addition, Krzyzewski recently promoted Smith to full-time assistant as a replacement for Nate James, who left in April to become head coach at Austin Peay. If Amaker joined the staff, Smith would have to be demoted or even out of a job".

As a Yale fan, I had really hoped Amaker would've taken the Duke job, but I think he made the right call. He's not been tremendously successful in the P5 (both at Michigan and Seton Hall), he's surely got a job for life at H, what with how he transformed their historically bad program and all (Yale and Jones are the same way; I promise this isn't an attempt at an insult ), and he and his family seem to be happy in Cambridge.
The expectations at Duke would also be massive, and I think Duke Michigan-manning their basketball job is gonna lead to the same sort of thing as happened at Michigan football — they'll grind up old assistants through their HC position because their expectations are simply too high. Why put yourself through that?

Not to mention that just being considered for the job probably earned Amaker an even bigger financial package from Harvard than the one that already dwarfs any other coach's contract in the league.
