The Bison open tonight at nationally ranked Ohio State. BU is very young - having graduated four starters - and small. Average height is exactly 5-10, and no one is taller than 6-1.

Women's Basketball opens campaign at #17 Ohio State

Season Preview: https://bucknellbison.com/news/2021/11/4/buckne ll-...

This will be a work in progress, with three good freshman learning the D1 game.

The women are holding there own against a very talented team. Got off to a shaky start, down 20-7, then used a 15-0 run to take a brief 22-20 lead. Down 28-24 at the half. OSU has shot terribly. BU turning the ball over way too much.

Minimizing turnovers has been a plus for the Trevor Woodruff teams. Previously that was the one consistent weakness of most of Roussell's teams. Hopefully tonight's problems are a one-time thing, due to the size/quality of the opponent plus the inexperience of the Bison.

Didn’t see the game, but I note that nine of our eleven players got double digit minutes. Hopefully lots learned tonight by the coach and his young team.

Congrats to the women for a hard fought victory over Iona tonight. I think Collins, who led the team in scoring, is going to be a good one.

Yes, fought through a rough first half and played much better at both ends in the second half. The refs were very whistle-happy in the the first half, which made for a sloppy game. They let them play in the second.

Those “happy whistles” led to a huge foul shot advantage for the Bison. It is hard to believe that a visiting team would amass more than 20 more free throws, and outstretched them by 20 at the line. True six of those points came down the stretch when Iona had to foul, but still free throws won it.

It was the 6 travelling calls and 2 or 3 charges, many of which seemed questionable.

Also have to say the Iona announcers were great, especially the color commentator, who's name escapes me. She is the former Seton Hall coach and clearly had scouted Bucknell like any good coach would. Such a refreshing change from the Ill St announcers the other night who seemed to know virtually nothing and care even less about Bucknell's players.

What a horrible 1st half vs. a weak N Dakota team. Must have been at least 10 missed layups. Shooting 24% overall and 1-8 from 3. If O'Brien doesn't stay out of foul trouble, we're sunk.

O'brien stayed out of trouble and was her usual athletic self with a key defensive play at the close. Krsul had a nice game, too. They do what it takes to win! Thanks for a good game ladies!!!!

Much better 2nd half as they started making a few layups. O'Brien took over for much of the half and almost single handedly got them back in it. I just wish they weren't playing from behind in every game. It's got to be wearing on Coach Woodruff's nerves.

Yes, a young team that is learning what it takes to win. This will pay dividends when the league schedule starts, and the Bison will be better than expected and peak to the PLT. Just sayin'

A really entertaining game, while at the same time frustrating as the Bison missed a ton of shots. Despite that they never let ND take control even though we trailed virtually the entire game. O’ brien had 3 fouls at the half, did not get another. And took over the game. The Bison found a way to win. By will be a good test.

It’s easy to get carried away and make too much of a single win or loss, but major kudos to the women for a solid win over a Vermont team that demolished Brown the day before. Quite a game by O’Brien.

Taylor broke the Bucknell outdoor High Jump record 5'7 1/4 " in 2019.. she would have a great shot at the indoor record, problem, meets are held during the basketball season. I understand she is a very good hurdler, an athlete to say the least.

O'Brien was named tournament MVP after scoring 46 pts in the two games. Also had 12 rebounds. Collins was also named to the all-tournament team. It has not taken her long to adjust to the college game.

Also high jumped 5-8 as a junior in HS. Additionally she twice finished third in the state in the 300 hurdles. Never competed in the high hurdles however.

Sign of the times: men and women played at the same time. From Long Island I don’t have the option of attending a lot of gams, so it is tv for me. I opted to watch the women, and then to watch the men later. This team appears to be coming on strong, though it remains to be seen if VT is as good as they have benn reputed to be. The Taylor O’Btien show is too good to miss and Collins is playing like a veteran. On top of that Carly Krsul is really coming on. Again time will tell how good the teams we have beaten are, but this team is looking like they are not going to surrender the title without a fight.

Yes, I would choose to watch the women also. Tough to judge them at this point. Their two losses are to strong teams. Their five wins are all vs weak teams. (Vermont ranks #291 in the nation, per Massey.).

At some point their lack of size will hurt them, as they struggle some to control the defensive boards. Hopefully that won’t be often. Cecelia Collins has been great, and I expect her fellow freshmen to gradually seize more playing time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sisselman starting by the first PL game.

It's too early to tell how good this team will be. This seems based more on reputation than on performance so far this season.

Meanwhile, back at Sojka the women took care of business against an admittedly weak SFU. Quick question: Does anyone know the status of Nicole Davis? I know she barely played at all last year due to injury. Is that still the situation?

Davis has been on the bench but has not dressed for any of the games so far. I can only assume she is still dealing with an injury.

Although SFU is not a strong team, this was still an impressive win. Especially holding them to 3 points in the 4th quarter.

Davis tore her ACL at the end of January last year. Prior to that she played a bit, but had not earned any real minutes. She also had a serious knee injury in high school. She is expected to be available sometime in the next month, although it is unlikely she will see time in close games.

The next several games will tell how good the team is going to be. It's going to be a challenging stretch vs. Penn, St. Bona, GMU, and Buffalo. Fortunately, only the St. Bona game is on the road. If they can win two and be competitive in the other two, I'd call that a success. Then they open PL play at home vs. Boston, which will not be a cake walk.

One thing to note about the Penn game: Penn is a quality team with a couple of very good players. But all eight of their juniors and seniors were given four game suspensions prior to the season for some sort of hazing incident. The suspensions are being served on a mix-and-match basis over the team's first eight games, so every game sees a different lineup. If I have analyzed it correctly, I think their star, Kayla Padilla, who is averaging 22.5 ppg, will not be allowed to play vs the Bison. Also starting PG Mandy McGurk, the sister of former Bison Megan McGurk, also appears to be on the suspension list for this one.

McGurk, btw, had a scholarship offer early in her junior year from Aaron Roussell, but couldn't make a quick decision. That scholarship was instead grabbed by Tai Johnson. McGurk much later committed to Penn

It wasn't the prettiest game, but nice to get the win. We probably don't beat Penn if they're a full strength the way we shot the ball. Taylor O still gets 19 points despite a poor shooting performance compared to her last 3 games. Still, she is 11-15 from 3 this year and right around 50% overall.

Agree, not one for the time capsule. We were outrebounded and missed a lot of good shots, but played hard for 40 minutes and won the turnover battle by a significant margin. Penn was really hamstrung by only fielding eight players, and I think it caught up with them in the fourth quarter when we pulled away. Still, a solid win, and I’m impressed by the way we play at both ends of the court.

Things got a little sloppy in the 4th with a couple of silly TOs. But they hang in to win by 12. Quality win on the road. Let's hope they keep the momentum going after the finals break. Next three are at home, which helps.

Though I'm curious how many were her own misses, since she was 5-14. I recall one sequence when she missed 3 straight layups, but got 2 offensive rebounds on the stat sheet. That's one area where she (and Shaffer) need to improve.

A little tougher game coming up vs George Mason. They got a good win over Florida, but have two bad losses vs. W&M and Norfolk St. Also lost to American by 8 and barely beat a poor Navy team by 5.

It's a game we should win, but it's always tough coming off of finals break.

Another solid performance by the women. My stat of the game: 21 assists, versus only 8 for GM. Sisselman also had a great game.

As an aside, after almost sixteen years on this board, this is my 400th post, and it seems that like Zonker Harris I shall finally graduate. Fortunately for me, this board, unlike Bucknell, welcomes graduate eligibility. :-)

Two intersting factoids about the GMU win:

1. Over the first 2:35 of the game, Bucknell outscored GMU 13-0. Over the last 37:25 of the game, the score was GMU 67, Bucknell 64.

2. First half score: Bucknell 41, GMU 24. Second half score: GMU 43, Bucknell 36.

Sometimes the first few minutes of a game are just as important as the last few minutes.

From the Buffalo game thread:

  • jkrun80 Said:
Collins was also very impressive down the stretch. Hit a big 3 and made FTs in the crunch. I haven't seen other PL teams much, but have to think she's ROY if she keeps playing this way.

Collins received a well-deserved PL ROY award today. As for her chances of winning the yearly award, I think they are fairly good, assuming the bison are contenders all the way to the end. Right now there appear to be only two other possibilities: Loyola PF Lex Therien, who is 3rd in the PL in rebounding and top 20 in scoring; and Army SG Trinity Hardy, who is ninth in the league in scoring. Collins currently is 13th in PL scoring, but she is shooting at a much higher percentage than is Hardy.

Therien, btw, is the third of three sisters to play for Loyola in the last few years. Her father was a regular for the Philadelphia Flyers for well over a decade.

Cancelled due to Boston U covid. I was afraid this would happen, as Boston's star player, Sydney Johnson, had missed the previous two games due to covid. It is possible that more players picked it up - or that they simply didn't want to play without Johnson.

Based on what we've seen of Boston U in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if they refuse to bus to Lewisburg on short rest later in the season. With the PL's lack of intestinal fortitude, it is possible the game will never be played.

Bad loss today at Army. We jumped out 8-0 and seemed to think it would be a walk in the park after that. But Army kept hanging around and started hitting 3's in the 2nd half. We hit two in the first 2 minutes and only made one the rest of the game. O'Brien and Walls played well, but that was about it. Krusl 2-8, Collins 2-8, Johnson 0-3, Sissleman 0-3. The only positive is this may give them some motivation for the rest of the PL season.

A defensive masterpiece in the first half. Love the fact that the refs seem to have forgotten their whistles. Often when by that happens in one half they do the opposite in the other.

What a great win on the road. The defense wasn't as stingy in the 2nd half and Lehigh started making some open shots. But still, holding a team averaging 70 a game to 45 is mighty impressive. The offense is still shaky at times, but the defense has been stellar the last two games. Looks like their getting themselves back on track.

Big home game Sunday vs. American, who beat Holy Cross 52-39 tonight.

New mid-major poll. Bison move up from 24th to 22nd. Lehigh is still the top among the "others receiving votes", theoretically #26, despite losing to the Bison by double figures.

Tessa Brugler's Drexel team is #15.

The league standings are starting to sort themselves out. The top four teams face each other on Saturday with Boston at Lehigh and HC at Bucknell. Boston is 6-0, but has played a weak schedule (including Loyola twice). Their best win is vs. American. We'll see which of these two is for real.

HC is 5-1 with a quality win over Lehigh, but a lopsided loss to American. They also have close wins over Colgate and Lafayette. This is a game Bucknell "should" win easily, but the memory of the Navy game is still fresh in my mind.

I think there are five "top" teams. American's record is 3-2 and they trail HC only because they have played a much tougher schedule thus far. Their two losses were on the road vs Boston U and Bucknell. They have double figure wins over Holy Cross and Army.

One interesting HC note is that their 5-6 PG Avery Labarbera is averaging 13.3 rpg in PL competition. Also averaging 17 ppg - but shooting very poorly on her threes. Labarbera originally signed with Canisius but switched to HC after Canisius fired their coach in March of her senior year.

That was a game we did not deserve to win. How does everyone forget how to shoot from one half to another. Luckily Navy was even worse and we made a few FTs. I know mid-week road games are tough, but that one was really ugly.

The team has lost the scoring by touch the past few games. They were horrible from 3 pt range, and not so hot inside either. But a win is a win. Wonder if we will ever see the team that was so good ooc.

38-17 at the half. Collins and Kulesza with 9, King with 8. Bison 56 % shooting, 46 % from 3. Only 5 turnovers. Really powerful 1st half. Believe it or not, only 2 first half points for Taylor O’Brien.

60-46 final. Taylor’s double point scoring streak ends. She did not shoot a lot, and most of what she did shoot did not go in. By my count( I don’t have the stats) she’d had 5 , but she was still a strong presence in the game in the rebound and assist departments. Four players in double figures including Kulesza and King, which hopefully is an omen of things to come.

A win is good, especially on the road. Unfortunately, they had another poor second half, getting outscored 28-22 with 12 turnovers. O'Brien's shooting slump continues going 1-10 and 2-4 at the line. This is the first time I can remember the bench outscoring the starters. That was the saving grace today.

it's a nice win, fueled by good defense and double digit scoring by three subs (Krsul, King, and Kulesza). However Loyola is very weak, so it was not overly impressive.

One thing that has had me concerned is that the team's outside shooting generally has gone cold. In OOC play - where the opponents were tougher - BU shot 61-161 (.379) on threes. In league play, the team has hit 42-152 (.276) on threes.

Further, the FT shooting recently has been poor - after being very good in OOC play. In league games, FT pct is .622. In OOC games, it was .765. That is a huge difference - as is also the case in 3-point shooting - and it is sure to produce a few close losses. In fact, 3-point shooting and FT shooting was subpar in all three PL losses thus far, and it was awful in two of the three.

Compare the 3-point shooting for each player in OOC games and PL games:

OOC Games:

Cecelia Collins 44.4% ( 16 - 36 )
Julie Kulesza 33.3% ( 10 - 30 )
Taylor O'Brien 65.2% ( 15 - 23 )
Remi Sisselman 33.3% ( 7 - 21 )
Marly Walls 37.5% ( 6 - 16 )
Tai Johnson 30.8% ( 4 - 13 )
Caroline Dingler 9.1% ( 1 - 11 )
Isabella King 11.1% ( 1 - 9 )

PL Games:

Cecelia Collins 16.7% ( 6 - 36 )
Julie Kulesza 40.0% ( 12 - 30 )
Taylor O'Brien 27.6% ( 8 - 29 )
Remi Sisselman 33.3% ( 5 - 15 )
Marly Walls 40.0% ( 6 - 15 )
Tai Johnson 13.3% ( 2 - 15 )
Caroline Dingler 0.0% ( 0 - 5 )
Isabella King 42.9% ( 3 - 7 )

Onw other thing is the FT shooting by the four key players who will shoot most of them in close fourth quarters. In league games, it looks like this:

Collins 76.0%
O'Brien 56.7%
Krsul 55.6%
Walls 43.8%

O'Brien has been a very good FT shooter the past couple of years, but right now it appears she has lost confidence in her outside shooting. Walls has never been a great FT shooter, with her right-to-left shooting motion, but she was a 68% FT shooter prior to this year.

To beat the top teams, I think these stats need to improve. This team does not have a lot of size or many players who can create their own shot. So they are dependent on making shots as well as playing great defense - especially as their PL opponents seem to generally have a better scouting report on their offense than did their OOC foes.

I hope the coaches are working with Taylor on her shot. She's missing pull-ups that used to be automatic for her. She can't shoot 1-10 vs Boston on Wednesday if they want to win.

The ladies games are traditionally poorly attended,
But this year attendance in Lewisburg has been abysmal.

Strictly a fan of the men's team for years, I now also follow the BU women and recommend them to those who have fallen on hard times with the men.

This Bucknell women's team has real talent, good coaching and most importantly, another element that is sorely missing on the present men's roster, solid RECRUITING!

It's the difference between a winning season this year (Women) and a sad losing season (Men) on the other side!

3 pt shooting has been awful the past few games, but vs Loyola in the first half it was off the charts. The post about the players ooc vs pl 3 pt stats is interesting. Kulesza appears to be coming back based on the Navy and Loyola games. O’Brien’s slump is a major concern. She was automatic from the foul line, but lately we’re lucky if she makes 1 of 2.
Re: bench scoring, Krsul coming off the bench doesn’t hurt that stat one bit.

The Bison face off with 1st place Boston U tonight at 6 PM in Sojka. Boston has an 8-1 PL record, which puts them alone in 1st. They start a 6-4 center and a 6-3 PF up front, which will really test the undersized Bison squad.

Bucknell, btw, moved back up to #25 in yesterday's midmajor poll.

Next two games for the women are huge. AU tonite and HC on Sat. Win those two road games and they are right in the thick of the first place battle. Lose both and they are a middle of the pack team. Split and they keep the status quote, an upper echelon team, but not in the hunt for first place.

Taylor O’Brien’s slump has been more or less offset by the return to form of Kulesza’s 3 point shot, and the emergence of King. To win it all, they need all of the above. The team also needs to get their foul shooting back on track.

Final score 66-49 in a game that wasn’t that close and in fact was over before the half. Frankly for 3 qtr she the Bison could do no wrong, while HC could do no right. On the negative side too many turnovers and missed free throws, tremendous defense covered it all up.

I am wondering what the importance of playing at home is to this team. They are 8-5 in league play having lost at home to HC, BU, and Navy. They beat Navy an HC on their own home courts and still have to face BU. They also beat LU on the road and now have to hold serve at home, or the Hawks become a fourth team to beat the Bison at Sojka while possibly losing to us on their own court. Maybe in the playoffs we are better off on the road?

This looked like the team we saw in the OOC season, except for the turnovers. I think HC may have been a bit cocky having won in Sojka and tied with Boston for 1st. Not to mention the whole football team there at the game. They may also have been looking ahead to playing Boston (for the 1st time) on Wednesday. Good to see O'Brien find her shooting stroke again. Lehigh is playing well, so the next one will be tough. Yes, it seems we don't have much of a home court advantage, but let's hope that changes on Wednesday.

I wish that were true, but the reality is that her outside stroke is still lost. Of her six baskets, five were from within three feet of the basket and the sixth was from no longer than eight feet. Of her misses, one was a badly missed wide-open three, one a badly-missed ten-footer, and the rest close to the basket. It still appears she has no confidence at all in her outside shooting and in games she is not looking for anything but shots in the paint. In warmups, her shooting pct on threes was perhaps 20%. In the last eight PL games, she is 1-19 on threes.

Having said that, it was nice to see her solid on FT's and looking like her old self on the drives. Also was good on the boards and on defense.

She had even been missing layups as well as FTs in recent games, so this is progress.
