I'm happy to see that the Lions are sticking with the same starting line-up for Marist as the one that took the floor against Fordham. The Columbia Game Notes for the Fordham Game projected that the Lions would not start Patrick Harding which made no sense to me. Harding belongs in the starting line-up for many obvious reasons including, in particular, the Lions need someone to play the center position. With Harding, Nweke and Murphy on the floor together, the Lions will have a chance to control the paint.

Lance said that Ike Nweke and Eddie Turner are out indefinitely with foot injuries. Maka Ellis did not play.
Lions were competitive in the first half tonight against Marist, but the second half was a different story. Team seemed somewhat fatigued late in the game. Unlike the Columbia women's basketball team, the Columbia men's basketball team may not have the depth and experience to go up tempo this early in the season. Not having Ike available to play is a major problem.

Marist made 70% of their shots. Like Fordham they hit a bunch of threes.

I HADN’T HEARD ABOUT NWEKE; We need him back in the lineup. We also need Ellis for his shooting and Turner as the first PG off the bench. Engles said that both of our opponents were good shooting teams—I think that they had too many open looks for the three. And we do not at this point have a reliable three point shooter, although I am hopeful that Murphy is that guy.

Without Nweke, we will struggle to reach even the KenPom projections. And while injuries are hardly Engles' fault, another poor record may well jeopardize his job.

WHEN ANOTHER TEAM SHOOS THE LIGHTS OUT FROM THE THREE POINT LINE IT MEANS THAT THERE IS NO DEFENSE. THE ONE ASPECT OF THE GAME THAT CAN BE TAUGHT, AND WHERE COACHING MATTERS, IS DEFENSE. WHEN KYLE STARTED AND HAD LITTLE TALENT HE MANAGED TO STEAL SOME GAMES BY HOLDING OTHER TEAMS TO 50 OR SO POINTS.

The season is still very young so let's give Coach Engles our full support. At this time, I guess it is fair to note that the Columbia's men's basketball team is, in effect, the equal to a freshman basketball team of years past which is not the case with any of their opponents.

Whatever D coaches draw up, execution is the name of the game. Ditto for O.
