Still a long way to go, but clearly that was an effort in the right direction. There are early signs that this team could be competitive in the league if they can continue to grind and grow.

Having a team with multiple guys who can drain the three, and a bunch of guys who can shoot fouls is certainly different. It's nice to at least be competitive. I like Jon's optimism and am buying into that.

Again, Jeff is Jeff, so along with UPIA, we expect a "Get off my Lawn" response to anything disagreeing with their world view (ok, view of Penn basketball).
But the trio of Dingle, Monroe and Charles is going to devastate teams at our level. What made me even more optimistic was that we are so deep that in deep garbage time, Bryce Washington came out with an attitude and aggressiveness saying, "there is no way I should be buried." And he showed it by being clearly the best player on the floor in the last 2 minutes. He would start for many teams at our level. If we get our big man rotation down, as it appears is happening, we're going to be very tough to beat.
On to Conway....

Matt Maloney was the Ivy POY playing with Allen and Bowman. That seems like a pretty good third.

I'm talking athleticism. Maloney was a great player. No, these guys are not as good as the '95 team, which also had Trice and Krug. But in terms of size, strength and speed, our three wing guys now are as formidable as any we have had since 1978. And remember, this is the first time they have played together. They are getting better by the game and will get much better.

Wang had a knee brace and was not moving that well. In this game, the last 8 minutes were garbage time--actually two phases of garbage time as we unloaded the entire bench (as I noted above, Bryce Washington looked very p-ssed off that he was in only in the last 2 minutes). I think Spinoso has shown that he does a lot more than Wang so far, so he is getting the time

Spinoso has really grown on me.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, I feel like the team operates much better offensively when he is in the game in the high post.
SD really seemed committed this game to have a lot of different players bringing the ball up, operating the point, and trying different sets. No more Jordan Dingle show, and that made it much harder for Lafayette to defend.
Still, Dingle's ability to get by his man and create his own shot cannot be discounted. No-one else on this team can really do that, at least on their own.

This is true if our level is Lafayette.
The players in that trio all have pros and cons. They will need to prove themselves against more athletic and skilled players than Lafayette or even Bucknell because the top of the Ivy league is better than both of them. We'll know more over the next week. Until then, it's best to pump the brakes before getting irrationally optimistic based on last night.
That said, there were some positive signs last night. I do think Penn will prove to be a tough opponent that is going to be difficult to prepare for. But there will be some games in which the individual match-ups will prove too much to overcome. See George Mason.

I suggest that Penn is easy to prepare for.
1. Pressure the ball. No true point guard - at least yet.
2. Overplay the three point line. That is the team's strength and Steve's emphasis
3. Work the paint on offense. No strong big man defense.
3. Pound the offensive boards. Probably limited to big guys.

George Mason is good, the game came after a nightmare travel situation and the team simply had not gelled. But I'm all for pumping the brakes, as long as they are pumped against the non-stop end-of-the-world pessimism we saw here after that game.
I just predict the Dingle, Charles and Monroe trio will terrorize our league after they play together for a while.

All I can say is that you don't watch the games. The team's strength is getting inside for easy 4-5 foot buckets. Steve does indeed want the team to shoot 3s as much as is competently possible, which makes sense. But if you overplay the 3 point line, our guys will drive into the paint at will.
And while we clearly have a PG who is going to be a good one in Slajchert, you are overemphasizing the need for a PG when all our guys can dribble. And if you were not impressed with Spinoso's high post game yesterday, you weren't following it.
Long way to go people.

#1 doesn't bother me. There are enough players on this team that seem capable of playing with with ball in their hands. Dingle, Monroe, and Slacker are the top 3. My bigger concern is that there's not enough off the ball movement - no cutter like Betley - and no strong in the paint presence. Also there's no one who can drive to the hoop physically except maybe Monroe. Jelani, Dingle and Slacker can all get to the paint but can't get to the rim with any consistency. Rosen had the same problem but figured it out by his junior year so maybe there's hope. Rosen is a high bar though. Antonio Woods is another example of a player who figured it out, but he is a physical outlier.
I agree with the rest.
As far as #2 - P38 is right to a degree in that there has been more variety in the offense the past two games. But there wasn't in the first two games. FSU and GM batted back Penn's inside game with ease.

Surprising that Jelani is not getting more love (unless I missed it). 6-9 from three-point range, 4-4 from the free-throw line, and big enough & strong enough to post his man up down low. There's no doubt that his numbers would be better, but there are 5 players on the court but only one ball, and we have so many offensive options.

My bad. I omitted him in the list of guys who look comfortable with the ball in their hands. He can also get into the paint but not in a good way because he has no lift anymore. He isn't going to be useful as a post-up player for that reason. He also looks to my eye to be a step slow on defense.
I'm thrilled he's playing because of everything he's been through. He has persevered a lot. The injuries have taken a toll though.

Agreed on Jelani. He lacks the lift of the other guys. But he still will be tough against Ivy level competition and brings a skill set that can be a nice complement.

It took a bit of time for Martz to get comfortable out there but once he did, he looked pretty good.

He's asking about Washington, not Martz, who did look very good once he warmed up.
Washington was a top recruit and started great played all 30 games averaging 7.5 ppg in 20 minutes per game and shot almost 40% from 3. He was less effective to start his soph year and only played 9 games before missing the rest of the year with injury. So he's a senior and apparently has just fallen behind others who play the same position. But he looks healthy and strong. He'll have to fight for time since we have a lot of guys who are 6'4" wings.

If the sophomore injury (wrist?) is in the rear view mirror and Washington returns to Freshman form then he has a skill set this team can use - ability to get open on offense, can get to the rim, plays reasonably decent wing D if I'm recalling correctly.
He seems to be in Donahue's doghouse. While Donahue does have a doghouse, there is a path to work out of it and join the rotation.
