Just stop playing the anthem. We don't need it--it's unnecessary for a college basketball game and unfortunately, what should be something that unites us has been appropriated to promote militarism and law enforcement (which had happened before 9/11 but was taken to an exponential level thereafter). So if someone has a protest against the military or law enforcement, as these kids do, the competing forces have to meet up at the Palestra. I say stop the anthem and play basketball. Injustice can be protested at the site of the injustice.

I'm also done with God Bless America in the 7th inning. Another anachronism.

+1
While Mr. Maguire is certainly entitled to his opinions and to decide where to direct his philanthropy, he is simply off-base in his response to this situation. He clearly has made no effort whatsoever to understand why the players are doing this, and the thoughtful way that the entire team has gone about it.
I have nowhere near the financial resources of Mr. Maguire, but I will be doing my part to make up the deficit that he is creating. I will be doubling my 2021 donations to the University and the basketball programs. I hope that others do the same.

i don't care about maguire's money, I would LOVE if we stopped singing the anthem. I watch EPL games all the time and don't miss them singing God Save the Queen.
But I have to push back on this idea that once you do something, as long as you didn't intend to offend, it's not your problem. That's not how taking offense works.

The only reason the song even gets played at American sporting events is that MLB owners instituted it in WWI because Woodrow Wilson was planning to shut their business down as unnecessary to the war effort, not least because it’s employees were all draft age men. The fact that it was born of selfish business interests and not patriotism should have long ago been reason enough to dispense with it.

I did look it up. McGuire is a big donor to St Joe's and Gwynned Mercy. He has no donations to the University of Pennsylvania's schools. He has a foundation for lymphoma research at HUP and donates to the Morris Arboretum. He is not a significant donor to Penn. He also greatly embellished his war record in that article. Just another guy looking for a headline in papers that never fact check anymore.

His was the naming gift that largely funded the acquisition of the old Episcopal Academy campus across City Line from St. Joes.
I agree about the fact checking though. Where did you track this down?

His own website. The part about his war record was posted in the comments on the Inquirer website and I checked and that was correct too.

So if I understand this correctly, a guy who does not donate to Oenn says he will not donate to Penn do to anthem protests?
Agree on the national anthem also. Should only be played at holidays and maybe a few other special events. Other countries do not do it for their college or pro teams.

Who also said: he had “jumped out of planes, froze my a— off, saluted my American flag every day and loved my country with all its shortcomings"--the guy flunked out of Niagara in 1954 and served after the war ended. Doesn't say anywhere that he served in Korea, but yes, Korea and Japan are cold in the winter---they guy was not at Chosin though, as it seems he implies.

Good, thoughtful answers here. Just adding a +1 to the get rid of any and all anthems around sporting events crowd.
And strong fact checking P38.

Also offered without comment: the women do all stand for the anthem (though some of them don't look incredibly thrilled about it.)

I had to leave at halftime to avoid getting into it with a long time ticket holder who sits near me. He was rooting for nova because of this. This country is fractured.

Did anybody notice at the Temple game that a buzzer sounded at 12:00 minutes before game time and both teams returned to the locker rooms? The Temple band then played the National Anthem before the teams returned to the floor for the lineup introductions and beginning of the game.
On the one hand, this removes any controversy caused by players sitting or taking a knee during the anthem. On the other hand, it denies them the opportunity to make a statement, which by all indications the Penn coaches and athletic department have supported.
Personally, I have always stood and faced the flag while neither putting my hand over my heart nor singing, followed by lightly clapping. That’s what I’ve done for 60 years and basically what everybody did once upon a time. I’d be perfectly happy getting rid of the anthem at sporting events altogether, as well as removing “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. Neither was originally there and really doesn’t belong.

Under God was inserted in the 1950s.
Directly as a result of the Cold War--to distinguish us from the Communist, godless Soviet Union.
Agree we should dispense with that as well, but sadly it will be an extremely long time in this country before an atheist could get elected President.

I've thought for years and years (way before protesting), that is was weird that the national anthem was played at every sporting event. It's totally out of place and unnecessary. What the hell does a game with grown men playing with a ball have to do with the national anthem? I remember sitting at the Eagles playoff game against maybe the Bucks in early 2000s, and even after the tailgating with a few beers (maybe more than a few), I still remember thinking, why the hell do we need jets flying over and an American flag the size of the field, let's play some freakin football. Sign me up for taking nationalism out of sports.
