Arkansas also takes a lot of shots that we don’t value. So in some ways it was a good matchup for us, because they would settle for 2 point jumpers. Looks like any shot they wanted, but some of that is that they were taking a lot of the shots we want them to take.

They shot over 50% from the game, and a decent chunk of those were layups or dunks.
What prevented this from being a blowout, in part, is that they just could not buy a 3. 3 for 17. And despite this they still shot 50% from the field overall.

Nevertheless, this is a team that was 5-0 coming in, had beaten Cincinnati and Kansas St, both pretty good programs, and has a notoriously difficult arena to play in. If you had told me that Dingle, MLL, and Wang would all be out, I would have told you that we'd lose by 35. It's something to build on, at least.

Arkansas scored 76 points.
48 of them were points in the paint.
They also hit three from beyond the arc (9 points) and 9 FTs.
So that's a grand total of 10 points scored on two point shots that were not in the paint.
They were 29 for 46 (63%) on two point attempts, with 24 out of the 29 made buckets coming in the paint.

Agree with you. Plus Spinoso being out early on, and it did not look good.

And Nova will have played on Penn's home court more recently than the Quakers.
They are giving the "home" Explorers quite a workout right now at the Palestra.

So Dingle fell ill on the flight to Arkansas.
Surprised that SD came out and said that there was a mental health issue with "another guy" [I think we can all figure out who that would be].

Whatever Arkansas's skill, they closed out the game with a series of layups against an impotent Penn defense. Looked more like poor fundamentals than lack of talent.
At KenPom 280 on defense this team is so far showing the defensive challenges we worried about coming into the season. Interestingly the offensive rank is 152, a surprisingly good number given the tough schedule. That is reason for hope.
So, one more beat up at Villanova before we get to a stretch of games that will tells us more about the Ivy chances.

We had a lot of guys playing a LOT more minutes that what they were used to, given all of the players that were either out or left the game early on.
Against a very athletic club, to boot.
We hung in there and it was basically a 10-12 point game until a few minutes left.
Giving up some layups during garbage time should not be the main concern.

What struck me is that we could create open shots easily against a pretty good team. We just didn't hit open threes and really didn't have anyone who was finishing well in the lane. The only shots that seemed to work were our cuts to the lane. Even still, we were in the game against an above average team.

The line was 18 and I thought we had no chance to cover after the way things started.
If MLL and Spinoso can return soon and Slachjert gains confidence from this game, I can be optimistic.

Agreed. There's still work to be done, but the fact that this team, depleted as it was, hung in with Arkansas has to be encouraging.

I don’t think we can expect the defense to improve much until MLL comes back.
Another takeaway is we got more proof of how valuable Monroe is to this team.

Was the line 18 even knowing that Dingle would not play? I find that hard to believe.

Definitely agree about Monroe. He is their best glue guy out there giving them defense but also helping them to bring the ball up court against taller defenders.
Cautiously optimistic about this team being competitive in the Ivies. They can shoot. They'll need the two big men back, but MLL and Spinoso makes them average at the 5. They need to learn how to play better team defense and cut the turnovers. If they do that the team will be competitive.

I'm worried about durability at the 5. That position might be turning into a bit of a telenovela. How's Larsen coming along?

Who says there are no such things as moral victories? That last basket from Smith to Laczkowski is even sweeter with that knowledge.
