Although tomorrow's Lafayette's game is not a particularly high profile contest, it has nevertheless become something of a milestone game: of the twenty-two remaining contests, it is now the losing game where we have the best chance of winning (48%). There are now only two games left where we are supposed to win (against Maine and Maryland Eastern Shore), none of which are in the Ivy League. But just as cumulative probabilities do point to a 3-11 rather than a 0-14 record in Ivy League, the Lafayette game is both an opportunity for a small upset and a yardstick that could demonstrate some progress.

Lafayette is 1-4, at KenPom 301 (we are at 337) But to further complicate matters, they lost the first four games of the season, and then most recently, just upset Rutgers (KP 95). They also have a seven ft. center, and we have consistently struggled inside. So the question is whether the Rutgers' game marked the turn-around for their season, or the Columbia game will mark a modest turn-around for ours.

Yes, it would be quite nice to defeat Lafayette for the reasons you stated, but whether or not we win tomorrow evening is not as important as the coaching staff doing the very obvious things that are needed to turn this young and very inexperienced group of players into a competitive Ivy League Basketball by next month. We need to remember that due to Covid and whatever, Columbia's very young players are trying to compete with their much more experienced opponents. This is a huge challenge for the Columbia coaching staff and the Columbia players, and certainly no surprise to very knowledgable Lion fans like yourself. Keep the faith!

In a half with a lot of embarrassing moments (C down 40-20), my vote is for the graphic showing coach Fred O'Hanlon of Lafayette.

Yes, embarrassing first half as the Lions are getting clobbered by a very good Lafayette team with an excellent veteran coach. Hopefully, the Lion coaching staff will make the fairly obvious adjustments needed by the offense as pointed out by the television analyst.

Penn destroyed this team, which also lost at home to Cornell.

Granted, they did beat Rutgers, but at this point it's a bit of a stretch to say that they're a very good team.

73-50. We got the team that beat #95 Rutgers, not the team that ranked @300 in KenPom.

0-14 in the IL looms as a distinct possibility.

Maybe penn nation can explain why Dr. John Giannini, the former Lasalle head coach isn't coaching somewhere. I haven't followed his career, but as a basketball analyst he is one of the best.

When Bolster was stripped in the back court in the first half I knew the game was lost. To lose is one thing. To be routed by Lafayette is something else.

Gianinni was a guy with tremendous success--winning a Div. 3 title and getting LaSalle to the Sweet 16. But in the years after that, his teams had academic issues and the landscape for schools like LaSalle had changed. Given his emphasis on academics through the years (they always trumpeted that all their seniors were graduated--the problem was the guys who didn't make it to senior year), he probably would make a good Ivy coach. Here's a good review of his career from Mike Jensen of the Philly Inquirer when LaSalle let him go: https://www.inquirer.com/philly/sports/college s/la...

Thanks palestra38 for the information on Gianinni who has impressed me with his broad basketball knowledge while acting as the analyst on many of ESPN+'s broadcasts of Columbia's basketball games this season. Gianinni seems to have a terrific feel for the game of basketball and has made numerous astute comments during the games. For example, he noted that Lafayette was using a certain type of defense against Columbia's point guard that I, and probably everyone else watching the game missed.
