It is hard to understand the potential impact of any young assistant but I hope he can help the current mbb team social media footprint. The current staff are complete social media duds. In today’s world, it helps to have a significant footprint on social media to enhance the interest of both fans and high school basketball players.

The football team does a significantly better job on social media than the men's bb team. They don't have to travel very far to learn how to go about it.

Why don't they hire some kid to do social media--that's what everyone else does. Why would that be the responsibility of an assistant coach?

I'm sure they would love to hire someone for that. Since this third coach is a volunteer positioin I am guessing there isn't a lot of money in the BBall budget to throw around. Unless you are offering to finance it. I can see it now "The Palestra38 Social Media Assistant Coach". This could be a thing.

There has to be enough in an Ivy budget to pay $40K to someone still in or right out of school --that's what these jobs go for. Anyone with a kid who was graduated within the last 10 years knows someone who did something like this for a while.
And you don't want P38 to take this job. 65 year olds are more similar in expertise to Pony Express communications than today's social media. But if they want to give me the $40K, I'll go back to doing Penn Report Cards.

I would never suggest you take the job. I am suggesting you endow the position and it is named after you! That's way better!

I think he has contributed enough in season ticket fees over the years to endow the position.

You can do a college student, or even a high school student, to do it for free. It's not too hard to find someone and it's a resume padder.

Instead of worrying about social media, shouldn't we all be offering NIL sponsorships to players, the team, and the athletic department?

First thing that has to happen is that the school has to show it gives a damn about sports. Clearly, the prior administration did not. If that changes, there may well be more interest from alumni to help.

I’m not going to pay P38 40k, but I for one would like to see a return of the report cards.

it seems prehistoric that we do not pay a 3rd assistant. Beyond the fact that this leaves us at a deficit compared to most D1 schools, from a moral point of view, how do we allow our schools to get away with this?

It's the same dynamic that allows thousands of corporations to get free labor from unpaid "interns" who use it as resume padding. Neither should be allowed. You should be paid for work.

Unfortunately I believe this is an Ivy League limitation, not a Penn one. I'm sure we would like to pay them for their work. Instead they are left to hustle for pay via the basketball camps and such.
Also, hope he is a nice addition and wish him all the best, but disappointed though not surprised that we opted for doing the same thing and hoping for a different result with our assistants (this was a natural point to make a more significant change).

by same thing what do you mean? we couldn't have hoped to get much more if we're literally not going to pay them.
and yeah, I know it's an ivy thing which is why I said we are at a deficit compared to most D1 schools and not compared to most Ivies, But it's still immoral. Frankly I've seen a movement among intellectuals to remove unpaid internships. I think they've stamped out many though many still remain.

Sorry being honest, I meant since the staff was changing up I was kind of hoping we could have found a way for one of the senior assistants to move on and bring new blood into the mix in a way that can actually impact recruiting. The third assistant is limited in what they can do in recruiting (I think this is also an Ivy limitation but less sure on that point).
I never expected this would happen, but I do think that is the only way results change.

While I agree that we can certainly use a plus recruiter, I still make us at least a co-favorite to win the league this year and next. So asking for change for the sake of change is premature, in my opinion.
