According to Stan Greene, Booney Salters has pancreatic cancer. As of now, there is no e-mail or address to send wishes but I know all of us who know him wish him the best and hope his health can improve.

I have some great stories of Booney from the Yale-Brown trip during the Great Snowstorm of 1978.

Thanks Booney for being such a huge part of the most memorable time in Quaker basketball history. Rest in peace my friend.

So sorry to hear this. Besides being a helluva player, Booney was a wonderful human being - always a smile and warm greeting when I saw him at many of the alumni games. May the memory of James "Booney" Salters always be remembered for a blessing. RIP Booney.

Guy was the heart and soul of the great '78-'80 teams, one of two teams in Penn history to win NCAA games in 3 consecutive seasons. And what he did with the '80 team--virtually all freshmen and sophs after the graduation of all but him of the Final Four team regulars was unbelievable. Beat George Raveling's Washington State team in the NCAAs. Great guy, and a WINNER.

So true. In Booney's memory, I posted on YouTube footage of his game-winning jumper against Princeton in the 1980 one-game playoff for the Ivy League title.

In the 1979 Final Four/National Third Place game in Salt Lake City, when Penn erased a 23-point deficit against DePaul to force overtime, Booney hit the shot that tied the game for the first time at 83-83, the jumper that tied the game at 85-85 with :12 left to force OT, and the bucket in OT that gave Penn it's only lead of the game, 89-88. Here's a link to the end of regulation and overtime, including Booney's last two baskets.

My stepfather, Mike Nazarok was the equipment manager for the first half of Booney's time at Penn. Booney was his favorite.

RIP Booney. Reading this made me sad--much too young. But it also got me reading some articles about Booney and the 1979 team. Which made me smile. But then one included the Matt White story and I got said again. At least Booney made it to his sixties and sounds like he did some great things after basketball.
