Providence pulled away from Columbia to take a ten point lead at halftime.

Lions lose to Providence 78-64 as the coaching staff continues to struggle with coming up with a plan to give the team a winning identity. If you keep football comparisons in mind, it is unclear how the Lions plan to score more points than their opponents and what kind of defense they will be using. Nearly all well-coached winning teams in any sport have an identity of sorts, but Columbia seems not to have one yet.

I thought that there wasn’t much of a talent gap considering the relative youth of our team.

We lost but for the second time in a row, by about 6 pts less than the KP projection. I take this as a sign of progress. DLR is a handful, Bedrie is, for the first time in quite a while, a center who can score, Thompson will have his games, and the guards are a work in progress. By the time the IL season starts in 5 weeks, I expect we will steal enough wins to avoid the cellar.

Agreed --- they focused on some of our defensive weaknesses to win the game whereas we did very little to exploit their weaknesses.

Avoiding the cellar cannot be any athlete's goal.We need to start winning games now and be strongly competitive in the Ivy League. No excuses allowed even if you are starting four freshmen. For example, I believe Chet scored more than 30 points in his first Columbia game, a win over Navy. Columbia Men's Basketball will be back to square one if Engles finishes the 22-23 season with let's say a 5-25 record and 3-11 in the Ivy league.

Thanks for the memories 37P6. But I had to wait for my sophomore year to play varsity; freshmen were not eligible.
