We all know this is true. If Penn didn't have the Big 5 and an occasional team didn't want to experience the Palestra, the same would be true for Penn. I do think, however, that Jadwin is an extreme home court advantage due to its never ending vistas at the end of the court.

For a short time, smaller schools made some inroads when the RPI formula was tweaked to place a premium on road wins.

But this ingredient was taken out of the mix, with predictable scheduling consequences.

The NET does something similar twice over: both with a home/road adjustment in its metric and with the quadrant system. It's not generous enough for road games, but that isn't the point. Power 6 teams do not need to rack up quality games in the nonconference because they know that they'll receive the benefit of the doubt regardless of how well their conference actually is. Their only noncon incentives are to get wins and make TV money. Even if (as Sagarin has it) Yale is just as good as Villanova, the coaches know that if the lose to the former, it's a disaster, but if they lose to the latter, it's understandable. After the Pac-12 couldn't beat the SWAC in their challenge series, I can't imagine any high-majors are going to rush to play quality mids.

I don't blame the other low- and mid-majors for not wanting to play the Ivies - why would you sign up to lose with 70% certainty? Harvard being willing to play home-and-homes with farther-flung mid-majors like Loyola Chicago helps, but it doesn't have the same benefit to the players as playing nearby schools does.

Providence has not been willing, in recent years, to pay Brown money to walk down the hill. However, this may be partially due to the fact that I have heard that Mike Martin and Ed Cooley are pretty good friends.

I don't quite understand why being good friends would be a reason not to play

Good question. Cooley would rather pay Columbia, or almost any other Ivy, to come to the AMP rather than lose to Brown. Local PC alumni/media are similar to those in other cities . They tried a home and home (3 to 1 at Prov) but a certain singer, with the duo Sophie-Tucker, hit a 3 to win at the Pits.
