Ever had to replace both its mens and womens coaches in the same year? Asking for a friend.

As an aside, the Green men fell to previously winless Central Connecticut State tonight.

It's not as though even as good a coach as Paul Cormier (I think the world of him--best game coach in the Ivies during his 2 eras as Big Green coach) was able to win in his 2nd try. No winning seasons this millenium. The problem is the institutional difficulty of recruiting basketball players who can win at this level in a beautiful but isolated town in New Hampshire. I'm just impressed how well Dartmouth has been able to compete in football.

Storrs isn't exactly a metropolis. Nor is Orono. Nor is Montpelier. That's just staying in NE.

Would you believe that there are some people who think that Hanover was a NOT a recruiting advantage in the 1970s through the mid-1990s? HAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

There are reasons why "Death Wish" was filmed in New York. I don't think that that the movie would have had the same impact if it was filmed in Hanover...

Storrs is a half hour from Hartford. The others, while small towns, are not nearly as isolated. What school is in Montpelier? UVM is in Burlington

The degree to which admissions hamstrings basketball and other sports at Dartmouth cannot be understated. Spend any time at all talking to those within any number of the programs and you'll hear endless tales of kids who might have come to Hanover but for inability to get confirmed admissions help.

Oh and, not for nothing. Storrs, full scholarships. Orono, full scholarships. Burlington, full scholarships.

Scholarships are a whole other thread...

But are you talking about guys who suited up for other Ivies because they didn't get past Dartmouth Admissions? We all know the story of Craig Austin. But he was over twenty years ago.

I'm sure our coaches--as have all Ivy coaches-- have been frustrated with admissions. However, if the players they couldn't get admitted ended up suiting up for Patriot, CAA, or America East teams, it's hard to get too up in arms about that.

I know for a fact Dartmouth gets less help from admissions than do several other Ivys. And once a school gets tagged with this sort of rep it eliminates an entire grouping of kids who won't even consider looking at the school at all, because what's the point? So it's not just the kids who 'can't get admitted', it's the kids who cross Dartmouth off their lists really really early in the process.

And this doesn't even address the potential coaches who won't consider coming to Hanover because they don't want to be put in a position in which success is nearly impossible.
